Flu Shot

I needed to grab a few things at Walmart the other morning and when I was walking to the front door I saw these adverts that said "get your flu shot here". I was surprised since it's still August.

They're already giving them down here

I've had it twice and I'll never get another one again . Got sick both times and never got sick without it. Not worth it to me IMO

The flu shot doesn't actually make you sick. To be sick with the flu shot either means you were sick before getting the shot, or exposed to the influenza virus during the 2 weeks it takes to get immunity.

There is no complete virus in the flu shot, so it is impossible for it to cause infection. That would be the equivalent of putting a steering wheel, distributor cap, and tail light in your garage one evening then opening the door the next day and finding a functional automobile.

I've never had the flu in my life. But I've taken that shot twice and gotten sick from something both times. There is something in those shots that make me sick. Not allergic to anything so not sure what it is

I understand. Correlation does not equal causality. People get the vaccine during respiratory season. By law of averages, a good number will get sick around the same time as the vaccine.

Say we all throw our hats at the TV every time UT throws a 4 yard pass on 4th and 9 or punts from the opponent's 37 yard line. Once in a while, Butch calls a timeout before the snap and reconsiders. The kneejerk is to say that we somehow helped the team. In reality, two things just happened at the same time.

You certainly could have picked up a bug at the office, Walgreen's, the line at work, or wherever you got your shot.

I could see that but the shots were 15 yrs apart. Only time I got sick is after the shot. Maybe it's just something about me,I am kinda weird :)

When you say you "got sick" after the shot do you mean you got a headache, fever, lightheadedness for a short period of time or did you get full on sick for 5-7 days?

Ima gonna have to try that to see what kind of car I can get, because, I as well had a flu shot many years ago (last one too), and I came down with what felt like a version of the flu, felt bad for 3 days. Never again.

As well, there seems to be numerous strains of the flu, and it is hit or miss when you get a shot as what actual virus that ultimately shows up during flu season.

Best fix I find, is to avoid those that seem to be showing signs of the flu, wash your hands frequently and you have a great chance of not catching the bug.

I've come down with something, most likely a common cold but wanted to know how soon after showing symptoms would you test positive for flu if that's what it is? I ask because often times people can get tested for flu soon after showing symptoms and it's too early to show positive but you could still have the virus. I started with the scratchy throat/drainage on Wednesday and developed a fever late last night. Didn't get much sleep and fever was 101.5 this morning.

There is very little influenza circulating right now. The rapid test can detect the infection fairly early into illness (day or so).

What are the benefits of getting a flu shot?

The main proposed benefit is obviously protection from the flu but unfortunately doesn't always achieve that but what it does accomplish is to keep people from dying from the flu which does occur annually to an alarming rate. The second and most likely highest benefit is the "herd Immunity" it provides to protect against possible pandemic episodes.

Hearing this year's vaccine is only 10% effective against the flu. I guess it's every man for himself for the next 4 months.

I can only say that I personally have not received a flu shot since I was 13 years old.
Last time I had the Flu I was 13...

You sound like the guy I know before he got the H1N1 Swine Flu.

"I've never had flu" "One shot I got made me sick"

So he didn't get them.

He got the flu so bad he was hospitalized. His immune system was so compromised by the H1N1 flu virus he got secondary bacterial infections. So then he had viral and antibiotic resistant bacterial infections.

He went into a coma. The bacterial infections destroyed both lower legs and his left forearm. They became necrotic and had to be amputated. He stayed in the coma several months. He was thought to be so near death his family was called in several times and they had funeral arrangements made. He did survive but his life, his family's lives, and that of everyone who depended on him are forever for the worse.

Now he gets around, even drives, but his computer controlled, battery operated prosthetic legs cost $120,000 each to be able to do that. Since his arm is similar, but not quite so exotic, it is something less. So he's wearing a little over $1/4 million in hardware because he wouldn't get a $25 flu shot.

You guys are amazing. But not in a good way.
