Fools Gold?

Losing a game is one thing. If we had lost by 10-15 pts. that would be losing and wouldn't be too big of a deal given the road environment and playing another top 10 team. Getting obliterated by thirty, getting your rear end kicked without even putting up a fight, and having no competitive fire, and zero inside offensive presence is entirely something else. What we showed last night was utterly embarrassing!
We competed defensively

It really doesn't matter. With ZERO offensive post presence, this team won't go far. Even in the NIT. We'll be lucky to get to a .500 conference record in a conference FULL of good post players.
Stop trying to make Outer Monvolia happen here. It isn’t going to happen here.

Was our 14-0 start just fools gold making us think we are better than we really are? When you look back at the non conference schedule, yes Illinois was a good win, but none of the other teams we beat were that good. I’m afraid we’re more in line to be a 4th place SEC team and 3 or 4 seed in the tournament rather than a top seed Final Four contender.
I thought they came out last night with a great game plan. Their first 6 shots were the shots you want, based on past performance. They were playing tough hard nosed defense giving nothing easy. I was thinking, wow, they are really ready to play. You just can't miss all of your shots on the road and expect to win. What was it 0-13 or 14 down 12 points before hitting a shot. The game was basically over at that point. If they had just hit 3 or 4 of those shots it would have been a tight game. The top 6 teams are dead even to me.

There is some truth to that but there is nothing wrong with being a 3-4 seed

Dude, we shot 17% from the field. It happens from time to time. It is not like that is normal. Shooting that bad on the road will get you hammered every time

I knew better than coming in here today since the sky is falling....

Just like our football team, the schedule did have something to do with it. I also think we might have a similar issue with leadership and dealing with road environments. Then again I wonder how we'd have looked if Phillips had been full go and Estrella not injured. Still, you're never as bad as you think or as good as people tell you...or is it the other way around? Anyway, it's January. Plenty of time for this team to grow and come together. You get stronger due to your trials. It's easy to run from the front. Let's see how they deal with some adversity.

There is something wrong with you. To question CRB leadership is the dumbest thing ever said on here, and that says a ton.

Yes, it was fool's gold. We need to keep that chip on our shoulder.

This team has some strengths. Unfortunately, shooting the ball isn't one of them. If Gainey hadn't gone off, wouldn't have beat Illinois.

But usually, an enjoyable group to watch. No fun last evening..

If TN has a below avg shooting night say (38-42%) rather than shooting 7/47 (14.8%) at one point, then we're having a completely different conversation.
Last night was a fluke. TN is going to be fine. IMO TN is the better team....just not yesterday. We'll see them again soon.

Correct. TN blew out Arkansas by almost the same amount as FL did last night while shooting under 40%.

Teams that are #1 seed, national championship contenders, may have off nights and lose a game here and there, but they don't EVER get obliterated and embarrassed like that. All you have to do is look at the rebounding disparity 55-38, and you will see that we were outworked, outhustled and played with a lack of intensity and effort. It's one thing to have an off shooting night and lose, but it's another thing entirely to get outworked and outcompeted. There is no excuse for being outworked and outhustled and allowing yourself to be manhandled.

So what's your point? Quit and call it a season?

Plenty of good and great teams have been embarrassed at some point during a season in all sports, so don't say it's NEVER happened. Just offhand, I remember the Kareem/Magic/Worthy/Cooper/McAdoo Lakers giving up almost 150 pts. and losing by almost 40 to the Celtics in Game 1 of the '85 NBA Finals, and winning the series 4-2.

Games like that happen, and for good teams serve as a wake-up call. We'll see how this team reacts, but given the character and leadership in this group and the ability of Barnes, I'd guess they'll react very well.

Barnes handled the post game masterfully. We've heard him be more critical after wins than he was last night, because he understands that games like this happen, and attacking his team like an internet troll would serve no purpose.

Sure. Anything else you'd like to add that would actually contradict what I said or have anything remotely to do with the OP? No offense if I don't hold my breath.
ok, fine. Proclaiming this to be a non-tournament team after one loss is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this entire site.

I would literally bet my life that this team makes the tournament.

I don't think anyone is saying this is a non-tournament team. It will certainly make the tournament. However some fans have much bigger aspirations and expectations than just being a tournament team. We expect to go to a Final Four or better someday, and seeing the crap we watched yesterday is very disheartening and is more or less dashing those hopes for this year. What makes last night extra disappointing is that we showed no fight or grit, as evidenced by getting outrebounded 55-38.

I mean, yeah technically he didn't say we wouldn't make the NCAAT, but saying "Even in the NIT" and "We'll be lucky to get to a .500 conference record" sure seems like that's heavily being implied.

Yeah! It didn't take long for the negativity to kick in. We were the LAST undefeated team. We got punched in the mouth. At least wait until you see how the learn from AND respond to this embarrassing loss before you start "THE SKY IS FALLING" chants.o_O The team might actually surprise you.

Well, to be fair, UT was sitting pretty well with Okpara, Estrella and Phillips. 2 of the 3 go down before playing UF and I'm not sure what you can do especially when you have an epically bad shooting performance. Dunno. Maybe there's something in the water down there that took our entire roster and rendered it incapable of hitting shots and free throws? Still early and again, just one game in the loss column.

Couldn't wait to post your funny pic so you didn't make it to this?
Talking about on the floor leadership when we get into these hostile SEC venues like UF and Auburn. ZZ has been there and done that, but all these new comers haven't faced these kinds of situations. Let's be honest. There are road games then there are games like last night. Plus, UF is a tad better than our transfers usual conference foes. Okpara being a possible exception. Maybe mental toughness would have been a better descriptor.

As great of a coach, as Rick Barnes is there seems to be the same glaring flaw every single year; a lack of guards that can create by themselves. Ziegler only hits threes from the top of the key as the shot clock is expiring and only gets to the lane for layups when we take our big men out of the paint to free him up. That flaw has been overlooked this year because of how many great lobs he’s thrown to the bigs, but teams in conference play now have a lot of film on that. Mashack is a straight up bad shooter. Gainey has his flashes but is anything but consistent. Okpara and Milicic play hard but are also wildly inconsistent. Just like teams from the past we’re gonna have to rely on excellent defense (which we have) and streaky three point shooters to win us big games. But on the bright side I think we have the best true shooter since Chris Lofton in Chaz Lanier and a PG that may end up being #1 in franchise history for assists and steals. Last night we saw the worst this team has to offer… but I think we’re yet to see the best.
