I heard Griff on a regional sports show last week (Conference Call) and he was really ticked off with Fulmer for closing all practices to reporters. Apparently Saban started this trend while at LSU. Griff made the point that in many markets the state university's football team is the main sports article in the news. He thought in his opinion the the criticism of the football program and specifically the HC was starting to get to Ole Phil.

I guess the symbionic(sp.) relationship of the News Sentinel sports crew and CPF is finally over!

I think this trend started after the loss to Clemson in the peach bowl where it was rumored Tommy Bowden scouted all of UT's practices leading up to the Peach Bowl loss. After that game practices were closed.

You would have figured by now Fulmer would have been used to the criticism.

I'm going to exit this thread before U-T's board scanner detects "Fulmer" and "criticism" in the same sentence and allerts all the loyalists. :biggrin2:

Awwwwwwwww poor Mike Griffith. What is more important to the program? Making sure nobody sneaks into our practices or making a mediocre sportswriter happy?

I think this is great. I remember during the spring last year Fulmer was saying this was the most talented and deepest team he could remember having. To me that seemed like a red flag, no matter how good a team is the coach just isn't supposed to add fuel to that kind of fire. It seems like Fulmer is taking the complete opposite stance this year and I think that will prove to be a much better choice.

The problem I have with this is, UT's offense hasn't exactly been very innovative over the years. People aren't beating a path to Fulmer's door to steal his plays.

The offense hasn't changed a lot over the last 20 years. Maybe Fulmer has changes in the work this year I don't know.

Not to mention Fulmers comments about what great shape the QB position was in last fall.

CPF is like John Candy who's a southern baptist elder...loves kids...is a great neighbor....community volunteer...is a great brother in law...but won the football coaching job in a card game. No 1 seems to love him after the 1st loss.

Griff can go pound salt and go back to Birmingham and cover his favorite team, maybe then he will be amongst those he actually supports. Objective reporting for the News Sentinel? My a$$. Wait for the next super critical column from Griff blasting the program on something else.

I am glad Fulmer closed the practices..good for him.

I agree! If it was anyone it was Fulmers's fault these kids were playing for the names on the back of their jerseys rather than the "T" on the helmet. I know you have heard it before but TAKE THE NAMES OFF THE JERSEYS. :gun:

IMO closed practices take away a necessary layer of accountability, especially considering all that we have heard about the general lax attitudes and lack of effort in last year's practices.

I think the decision was less about removing accountability than it was removing distractions. After last year's record and the prior off season, no news is good news.

It's not like David "Back to the Future" Cutcliff is going to install a new playbook.

I think some folks may be overthinking this whole issue. There were enough distractions last season. Closing practice allows the players and coaches to focus on the task on hand. Not reports writing crap every week about how this kid is lacking or this kid is doing great. Keep it all in house for now.

hohenfelsvol hits it right on the head.

In the 1990's, it was easy to be a reporter for the News Sentinel, all they had to do was report about how Tennessee was winning, capped off in 1998 by a National Championship.

Now that UT has been less than spectacular over the past few years, the only way to sell newspapers is to dig deeper, find more dirt, criticize that much more, i.e. become David Climer with the Tennessean for example.

Considering UT is so "in bed" with the Sentinel, I find it interesting they would close the practices off to them.

Regardless, if closing practices is the ONLY story they can write about, then so be it. These kids read the newspaper too.

Griffith is a loser who has no clue about any sport. He's just whining cause he has no clue what football is and can't sell out UT.

If he's on the BB beat now it won't be long till he pisses off Pearl and gets kicked out practice

I think to protect Sensitive Phil from all those nasty media types who dare to ask tough questions, we should take a page out of the old Soviet Union playbook. The university should start its own, in-house media arm. Hire rubes like Jimmy Hyams, John Wlikerson, and Brent Hubbs. That way, the head coach need not worry about being held accountable. All the news would be positive. In the absence of the opportunity to put out anything positive, Hyams could entertain the masses with a story about how Archie Manning once let him pump his gas. They could name the service Volvda or Vass.

I agree 100%. Like it or not, it's Phil prerogative.
