For grins: DC candidates

I’m an optimist and believe Coach Heup is smart enough to know that we need a defense if we are to compete for championships. I believe we might see a change in our defensive coaching staff in the off-season. Just for grins, I looked up the best performing defenses in college football this year…as measured statistically by the NCAA.

You can check out the stats here — NCAA FBS statistics 2022. I encourage you guys to check it out as the numbers are revealing, at least to me.

Defensive metrics I looked at, by team:

3rd down conversion percentage
1st down defense
Passing yards allowed
Red zone defense
Rushing defense
Scoring defense
Team passing efficiency defense
Total defense

A few teams’ defenses rank in the top 10 in almost all of these categories —GA, MI for example. But there are a couple who show up just as frequently in the 10 ten — IL and MN.

IL in particular is conspicuous in their defensive statistics.

IL is…

6th in 3rd down conversion percentage
6th in 1st down defense
7th in Passing yards allowed
19th in Red zone defense
7th in Rushing defense
3rd in Scoring defense
1st in Team passing efficiency defense
2nd in Total defense

If we had that defense, I am confident we would be in the playoffs with reasonable championship aspirations.

There are a handful of other schools present in the top 10 of these categories — e.g Iowa, Boise St., TA&M.

Personally, I have given up on Tim Banks and Willie Martinez. I hope to see them soon move on to greener pastures. So yeah…I’m nosing around looking for their possible replacements. We have a lot of free time here at Pelican Bay…
Hire Derek Mason. He’s pretty good at defense.

For goodness sakes I hope we can handle this without blood letting, other than maybe Willie Martinez. CJH has to weigh everything with an eye on recruiting. Y'all know full well what happens when the guy kids bought into and signs with gets canned. My biggest concern is how the fallout from this embarrassment will affect recruiting.

Upfront overall we have played good this year against the run and getting pressure to the quarterback. Now we didn’t last night or against Georgia but most of the year we have stopped the run and have gotten to the quarterback or hurried him has helped offset our secondary woes. Last night we didn’t get the upfront play that we had been getting and it exposed the secondary. GBO

you know the guy was the DC at Missouri right?

Consistently gave up 40 & 50 points.

I don’t care what kind of D season Illinois is having Tennessee don’t want no part of Ryan Walters. Missouri reject who tried and couldn’t get it done in the SCE. Now suddenly having a good year and hey………best thing since sliced bread. NO thanks!!

give me Phil Parker.

This guy has been rated as one of the best DC’s for several years…….he’s proven.

It’s simple. Go get Barry Odom, Derek Mason, or Zach Arnett

Just because AL Wilson says it don’t make it what Tennessee needs.

OK-ST is giving up 30 per game and over 32 per game to FBS teams.

Yards and scoring is what wrong with Tennessee.

Just because they coached in the SEC (and sucked) don’t mean they belong back as Tennessee’s DC.

Phil Parker isn’t leaving Iowa.

I'm so over the big name coaches too. Just find someone who is football competent.

Exactly you don’t need a “name” hire at all.

Tennessee simply needs someone who can coach, someone who is a current DC (knows how to be a DC / no learning). Tennessee needs someone who has proven their D at high levels…….not some name or former HC or flamed out.

Derek Mason is not cut out for Big 12 offenses. It is the same reason why Venables has been awful as OU’s head coach.

The style the league plays is not great for Defensive minded coaches.

Mason has SEC ties and is solid X’s and O’s. Mason at Okie State is a fish out of water.

Honestly, I'd approach Will Muschamp for the DC role and throw a truckload of $ at him. May not be best HBC but he's a proven winner as a DC. Currently co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at UGA.
Too bad we can't go after Beldar Cornbread for DC. He'll end back up at Bama.

Phil Parker isn’t leaving Iowa.

I didn’t say he was but how do you know? He been there a long time but if you want to get somewhere you at least got to “ask” for directions.

The guy has zero O
the guy makes less than 600k

Most likely not but we never know someone’s situation.

He makes $1.3 million a year.

you realize the SEC O isn’t what it used to be right?

Ah I saw 600k

Heck I’d still try 1.5

No way I would try Ryan Walters, nor some of these other names floated. No way would I try some experiment either.

If you couldn’t get someone great and proven don’t even try in my opinion. You would lose recruits for another experiment that could fail or “could” take years to see the benefits.

Oh really? Who knew? I guess that means the talent and elite players are now only on offense in the SEC too?

Didn’t say that, however you were the one who said Mason wasn’t cut out for B12 offenses.

Jerod Mayo. Been in the Pats system for years. Would prob have to make him the highest paid DC in America. He wants a HC job but the NFL will give him the run-around as the Rooney rule interviewee for awhile.

Def a long shot as they really like him in NE but he’s a VFL with big time coaching experience.

I don’t think enough people realize how massive of a hire this would be. Don’t expect it to happen but you have to make him say no.
