For grins: DC candidates

Also @JoAllan I went back and looked. Auburn in 2021 had a Top 5 SEC scoring defense and Top 30 nationally under Mason

They did that with an offense that 11th in scoring in the SEC and 68th nationally......

Obviously Harsin's time at Auburn is well documented but it was very evident that the offense did their defense no favors in his time there. He obviously wouldn't have to deal with that under Heupel.

While I'm not solely wanting Mason, I do think his time at Okie State skews some things.

Seems like more of a player issue rather than coordinator to me. Up to them to execute and they didn't.

This is so tired.

if the man calling the plays continues to put you in a position to fail it has nothing to do with the players. He should know by now Tennessee can’t play zone yet he continues to call the coverage. Add to that he continues to wait until it’s absolutely necessary to create pressure and he needs to be shown the door.

No doubt it’s just 1 season. I simply don’t think he’s the best possible. I think he could be solid. Right now I think Tennessee/Heupel needs to find the very best and best fit and one that will be for a while.

If that’s him……fine.

Best possible, no I agree with you.... But sadly our BVS has taught us enough to have multiple choices/candidates... Can't just zero in on one with a make them say no mentality lol

I’m an optimist and believe Coach Heup is smart enough to know that we need a defense if we are to compete for championships. I believe we might see a change in our defensive coaching staff in the off-season. Just for grins, I looked up the best performing defenses in college football this year…as measured statistically by the NCAA.

You can check out the stats here — NCAA FBS statistics 2022. I encourage you guys to check it out as the numbers are revealing, at least to me.

Defensive metrics I looked at, by team:

3rd down conversion percentage
1st down defense
Passing yards allowed
Red zone defense
Rushing defense
Scoring defense
Team passing efficiency defense
Total defense

A few teams’ defenses rank in the top 10 in almost all of these categories —GA, MI for example. But there are a couple who show up just as frequently in the 10 ten — IL and MN.

IL in particular is conspicuous in their defensive statistics.

IL is…

6th in 3rd down conversion percentage
6th in 1st down defense
7th in Passing yards allowed
19th in Red zone defense
7th in Rushing defense
3rd in Scoring defense
1st in Team passing efficiency defense
2nd in Total defense

If we had that defense, I am confident we would be in the playoffs with reasonable championship aspirations.

There are a handful of other schools present in the top 10 of these categories — e.g Iowa, Boise St., TA&M.

Personally, I have given up on Tim Banks and Willie Martinez. I hope to see them soon move on to greener pastures. So yeah…I’m nosing around looking for their possible replacements. We have a lot of free time here at Pelican Bay…

If I’m making the hire I go Gary Patterson and it’s not even close. Clean house except Gardner and make him the AHC and RC. I think he’d be the true opposite side of the coin to Heupel.
Don’t think that would happen. He is still mad about not getting the HC role before. If he is interested, he could still be a HC in the power 5. Several opportunities will be available.

While I tend to agree with you about it being time to move on from those guys, I wonder how much of Illinois' success is the schedule they play? They did play well against Michigan yesterday though. I am serious when I ask this, could a B1G DC come here and fix the problems immediately?
Pretty sure Banks is a former Big10 DC. So . . .

Upfront overall we have played good this year against the run and getting pressure to the quarterback. Now we didn’t last night or against Georgia but most of the year we have stopped the run and have gotten to the quarterback or hurried him has helped offset our secondary woes. Last night we didn’t get the upfront play that we had been getting and it exposed the secondary. GBO

We have been getting to the qb with blitzes. Last night we didn't blitz none hardly at all. I really don't know why we didn't blitz last night.

Justin Wilcox was very good here with little talent to work with. We’ve been one of the worst teams against the pass two years in a row now. And most believe there’s more to it than just a lack of talent.
Couldn’t go by our defensive rankings. I think he looked like Belichick only in comparison to Sunseri.

Well the current Big 10 coach we have is a failure.

Honestly, I'd approach Will Muschamp for the DC role and throw a truckload of $ at him. May not be best HBC but he's a proven winner as a DC. Currently co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at UGA.

UGA Grad. Doubt he will bolt for UT; unless He and Kirby have issues (Which I doubt)

They watched the Fla tape and said: "Rattler can't hit an open receiver." "He can't KEEP hitting open receivers." "WTH is going on here?" "He can't miss!"

I think we need more talented players - not sure we can get a coach who will make them faster and give them better instincts.

As I always say, Will Muschamp is the greatest defensive coach in college football - just look at how he shut down the gator offensive when he was their head coach. :D:D:D

True. But that game reminded me a lot of this one. Something just wasn’t right……and it may have been more “won’t” than “can’t”.
And like this one, we weren’t loaded with defensive talent but at subsequent stops (like Washington), he didn’t overwhelm with superior scheming imo. He’d be an upgrade to Banks…not arguing otherwise, but how much so I’d be skeptical.
