It seems as though we are going to be just behind the elites like Clemson, Bama , Ga , LSU , Ohio State .. and many others .. the best we can hope for is top 15 team .. reason being all listed above recruit to a level way above us .. IMO .. you have to have elite 5 star talent at at least 4 positions on offense and defense and at certain positions .. TN has 1 player I would consider in that category on defense .. Henry To'To .. you have to be elite at DE , DT , LB and DB .. four 5 stars at each of those .. Vols have 1 .. all teams above have that .. Offense same issue .. you need 5 star QB , RB , WR and 2 OL .. Tn has OL .. but no QB, RB or WR in that status .. teams above do. You can coach up all the 3 and 4 stars all you want but you have to have that Elite player at those positions .. and Vols dont and according to what we have committed.. we are looking at top 15 to 20 team .. and that's our ceiling .. thoughts ?

Harrison Bailey was ranked a 5 star by Rivals before he signed with us...🤷‍♂️

RB's Lewis, Henry and Stephens. Does anyone remember what these backs where rated when they signed with Tennessee ? How many five star players where on the OL that year ?

Setting "stars" aside, you must recruit guys that can become elite at their position and FIT the program AND be coached by a staff that is truly great in all fazes of the profession. When you have this combination of things, then you can become elite. As I end up saying over and over in response to these type threads,,,,, TIME,TIME, TIME

OP is correct. Talent trumps all in most cases. There are upsets every week but the elite teams usually have more talent. Clemson plays in a weak conference but loaded with talent.
TN had elite talent across the board in mid 90s up to 2006.
Fulmer, Kiffin , Saban, Pruitt, Urban, Dabo have always said it comes down to talent, elite players.

The first two teams you listed, OP, are Clemmy & bammer. Both Dabo & Nicky required a few seasons to reach those lofty heights by building their programs precisely as is Coach Pruitt, which is position by position with the best fots by the highest caliber athletes with the best of coahes, supported by a die-hard, rabid fanbase. At least for now, That's what's happening in Knoxville. As tempis fugits, and if the creek don't rise, UT football could be added to that group of "elites." May as well enjoy what COULD BE the ride to the top ... or not. Me. I'll just keep smilin', glad to be a Vol.

Per OP, we need 4 5-star players at each of four positions on defense....hmm, that’s 16 5-star guys on defense. Next we need at least 5 more 5-star guys on offense (QB, WR, RB, and 2 OL). Evidently, we need 21 5-star players to be a great team. In the 2020 class, there were 31 composite 5-star players (per 24/7 article entitled “Every five-star prospect in the 2020 class”). The OP said we needed 21 5-star guys, so we need about 4-5 5-star guys per recruiting year. Per 24/7:
  • For 2020, only 3 schools had 4 or more 5-star recruits (GA-4, AL-4, and Clemson-5).
  • In the 2019 class, only GA (5) signed 4 or more 5-star athletes.
  • In the 2018 class, GA (7), SoCal (4), and Clemson (5) got there.
  • In 2017, AL (6), OSU (5), and FSU (4) sogned 4 or more 5-star players.
  • In 2016, no school got more than 3 5-star players.
  • Over the last five recruiting classes, no school got 4 or more 5-star players each year. GA has signed 16 in the last 3 years, which is amazing.
To be elite, you have to have elite talent. That makes sense. However, you cannot sign elite talent on a consistent basis until you start winning consistently. It takes time to build a sustainable program and we are making tremendous strides under CJP.

To break into the elite part of the SEC/nation we must take recruits from Bama, UGA, LSU, Clemson. Right now top players are willing to sit on the bench to play for these teams. To beat them you must do the same or stop them from doing it, can't let them cherry pick and expect to win. We are right there, just need a push.

You misunderstood .. no way to expect that many .. I'm saying consistently having 4 - 5 stars on defense total and 4 or 5 - 5 stars on offense .. 8 total on a starting 22 .. I'd say the teams I mentioned are close to that .. we have Ol and a lb .. but I'd say some of those teams about have 8 to 10 5 stars from their starters

Clemson won 2 national titles with an average class ranking of 11

Oregon made it to the national title once with an average ranking of 22

“but those teams didn’t play in the SEC” do you seriously think that Clemson team with Deshaun Watson in 2016 wouldn’t have won the SEC? Or the 2018 one that beat Alabama 44-16?

It can be done without a million 5 stars. Look at UGA. They have more talent than literally anyone and s**t the bed every year

You have to have around 50% 4 and 5* players minimum. It’s about the Jimmy’s and Joe’s, not X’s and O’s. I believe every team who has won the NC has had around 50% 4 and 5* players since the BCS and CFP have been used to determine the NC.

There are 4 teams on next years schedule that are more talented than us. We need to find a way to play over our heads and win one of those games while taking care of business with the rest of the schedule. Win a bowl to get to 10 wins and a top 15-20 finish. This will be the next first step toward becoming elite again, until then, we are still just running in place.

Don't see how Kiffin is included in that list of experts
