For TN to get to elite status !

It seems as though we are going to be just behind the elites like Clemson, Bama , Ga , LSU , Ohio State .. and many others .. the best we can hope for is top 15 team .. reason being all listed above recruit to a level way above us .. IMO .. you have to have elite 5 star talent at at least 4 positions on offense and defense and at certain positions .. TN has 1 player I would consider in that category on defense .. Henry To'To .. you have to be elite at DE , DT , LB and DB .. four 5 stars at each of those .. Vols have 1 .. all teams above have that .. Offense same issue .. you need 5 star QB , RB , WR and 2 OL .. Tn has OL .. but no QB, RB or WR in that status .. teams above do. You can coach up all the 3 and 4 stars all you want but you have to have that Elite player at those positions .. and Vols dont and according to what we have committed.. we are looking at top 15 to 20 team .. and that's our ceiling .. thoughts ?

Our recruiting numbers have not been the main issue the past 15 years.

Our player development has been the issue.

At one time we had an online that was almost straight 4 and 5 stars and could still barely run the ball.

The year we had Dobbs Kamara and Hurd should have been a sugar bowl year but our coach at the time used Kamara sparingly as a back up instead of moving Hurd to TD or Possesion receiver and making Kamara the fill time back.

Clemson won a NC and beat Bama bad and if you stacked up the two teams side by side Clemson had no chance based on overall stars.

Pruitt's just needs an accurate QB now and I believe we get to the next level.

Osu is ONLY elite because the are on the big Suckey. If they were in the SEC they are 4th best team at best every single year.

We have them in "legions"
Dickey had elite talent, it dropped off quickly under Battle. It took Majors years to get back to that level,Fulmer expanded it. Since then we wandered in the desert for nearly a decade. Patience stinks, ask our citizens right now, however there doesn't seem to be a "magic" bullet to build especially with the success of many teams in our geographic area recruiting the same talent. Being Old has given me more patience, but I would like to have the success asap. I just think of every other coach we went to during the $hit show of Currie's last stand, I at least have some hope for the future. Being a die hard VOL fan, I want it sooner rather than later, being an old guy I realize it may take time. GBO

Teams don't magically start putting together top 5 classes by selling a dream.

You have to overachieve with good but not great talent. The last 2 CJP classes have been good, a Butch class or 2 was good, but besides that our talent has been mediocre at best for too many individual seasons. It's encouraging that players the staff identified in the '20 class shot up the board before the final rankings stuck. We will need to show we are competitive with, and beat, an elite team before we can sell the Vols as having returned to glory.

Let's say we win all the game we're "supposed to", and we go to Norman and get a hard fought win, and we win at home vs the Gators. We lose to Bammer and UGA as expected but not in blowouts. We have 10 wins and we're going to a great Bowl game. The next cycle we would absolutely clean up. To me this is like the ideal scenario that has some realism to it.

Don't see how Kiffin is included in that list of experts
I referenced Kiffin since he coached at UT, USC and OC @ Bama. Kiffin, as have the coaches I listed, said that elite talent is needed to be in the national championship mix.

We need A) to move the campus to a more talent rich area or B) go to another conference to be and STAY elite. The SEC is too strong and the geographical disadvantage is VERY hard to overcome.

No one wants to accept that it's not the 90s anymore and we don't have the HUGE luxury of talent in the backyard like FL and GA do. We missed our opportunity when Butch was here when those two schools were down. It's too late now.

Neocon is on the right path. You have to recruit but you also HAVE to develop. If ***** was the secret sauce, you wouldn’t even have to play the games. If I remember correctly last year’s nfl draft had 4 or 5 ***** players drafted in the first round. Nearly as many players that were non-rated coming out of HS were in the same first round.
These boys become men in college and development of potential is at least (I believe more) as important as what a kid did in HS.
Dabo did it with *** & **** at Clemson. Hopefully CJP can do it with **** & *** here.

RB's Lewis, Henry and Stephens. Does anyone remember what these backs where rated when they signed with Tennessee ? How many five star players where on the OL that year ?
Lewis was very highly rated. We plucked him out of Georgia, as we were able to do with impunity back then because UGA's program was in shambles.

You need a team full of guys that fit the system, take well to coaching, have high football IQ, athletic potential, depth without too much of a drop-off, some leaders and most importantly a QB.

A good QB elevates everyone. Pair that QB with a solid Ol, some skill position talent and a pass rush on defense and you can win. 4 and 5 stars at every position is great but isn't required to be a top team. Especially if you have a cohesive coaching staff that gets player buy-in, knows how to develop and scheme to their advantages and minimize weaknesses.

This all can be accomplished with top 15 or better recruiting.

I'm not sure why it's unreasonable to think we can consistently be a top ten team.
To be a top ten team we would have to win two out of three against bama, ga, and fla. Right now that is unreasonable. It will remain that way until our talent level is equal to theirs. Pump the sunshine all you want, it remains fact.

We were a good (not even great) QB away from competin for an SEC East title last year and could have won 10-11 games in regular season.

We are closer to being elite than people realize.
Defense needs some help from the offense. Pruitt will have the defense nasty and unpredictable,

You have to have around 50% 4 and 5* players minimum. It’s about the Jimmy’s and Joe’s, not X’s and O’s. I believe every team who has won the NC has had around 50% 4 and 5* players since the BCS and CFP have been used to determine the NC.
You would have to show me the evidence for that.

Someone posted the “star status” on current and past All American teams, and most were ”3 stars”. Sorry can’t remember who did it. But I do believe ”3 stars” and “4stars” trumped ”5 stars” reaching AA status and successful pro status.

Just putting the main competition at each position.

QB: Daniels (5*), JG (4*), HB (5*)
RB: Gray (4*), Chandler (4*), Jordan (3*), Whitehead (4*)
WR: Palmer (3*), Keyton (4*), Gibbs (4*), Johnson (3*), Gibbs (4*), Hyatt (4*), Calloway (4*), Wideman (4*)
TE: Pope (3*), Beckwith (3*), Lowe (4*)

I don't feel like doing the OL and DL because they are both loaded with 4-5*'s

LB: Toot (4*), Crouch (4* was 5*), Peterson (4*), Eason (4*), French (4*)
OLB: Bennet (3*), Johnson (3*), Baron (4*), Joseph (4*), Harrison (4*)
DB: Like the OL/DL, it's loaded with talent.

Soooooo according to what you put, it seems to me we already have an elite roster
Maybe except for TE and OLB, but outside backer recruiting is getting better. Where we really lack is RB/TE recruiting.
