Not absurd. Most people being vocal about this including coaches are not talking about kids making significant money. They are talking about more of an allowance since college football takes us so much of these kids time they have no time to have a job.
Heck I was recruited to run track at the Naval Academy. I not only got my college paid for via track but also got a SMALL PAYCHECK each month while in college. Little different because it was a service academy but I wouldn't have even got in without being recruited for track. You would think why did I need any $ since I had uniforms, free meals, free room. LIFE that's why. Same with these kids. $200-$300 a month is not going to ruin college football.
And lastly this is probably more of am issue no than 20 years ago. The pressure in these programs is unbelievable. Conditioning, film study. The NCAA limits "organized" practice to 20hrs a week. Key is "organized".
I'm ok with the NCAA relaxing rules restricting these players from working, but they should not be GIVEN money for nothing. Let them work summer jobs. Problem solved. Of course, they wouldn't work. They are too good for that.
