nice to have a WW to boost UE #'s

True. Massive govt employment (military mostly) helped these numbers. However, the foundation for stable employment had been laid. Many economists predicted a return to the Depression after <14 million soldiers returned to the job market. Didn't happen. In fact, one of the largest and longest economic booms in our nation's history followed.

I admire FDR during the war years because he was dying yet he knew he brought stability and confidence to the country so he pressed on.

I mean, you might disagree with him (FTR I'm leaning against SS), but I see what he means. I don't make six figures, so I might be biased... but it can be beneficial to some.

Yeah, not like I said that it would put me on easy street....

and many think that without WWII FDR's programs would have prolonged the depression. Essentially he "lucked into" (another debate) the war saving this country

I have no problem with you seeing it that way. It may be a tax, but I feel it will benefit me more directly than most other taxes I pay. I have no issues with SS.

I will never see a dime of the money I was forced to put into SS. I will never benefit from it.

IMO the question is can you get more out of SS than you put in? If so then it's essentially a handout

The main argument is the war essentially being a wide scale public works project which in theory, bumped us out of the economic downturn.

Yes. Whether I believe it or not, WWII could be used to support the argument that massive govt spending can end a depression. Not saying I buy that, but the point could be made.

Sorry. I could go for it now. I have continued to work despite a debilitating disease (diagnosed 8 years ago- 18 total years on current job) that has no cure because I value the satisfaction of a good day's work. I am glad that if I ever reach the point that I can no longer work despite my best efforts that I won't have to beg to feed my 2 daughters (8 and 6).

This also had its backlashes. The man left Truman completely in the dark even though he knew he was dying.
