But we're not talking about mass defections....read the sentence. Numbers dropping does not mean the Dems are turning into Republicans. This is about a motivation issue and approval of their own side. Look at those same polls. People overwhelmingly said the Dem controlled Congress was better off handling even some core GOP issues.
my point was about the lack of a need for mass defections. minimal ambivalence and minimal defections (really either or) would do the trick. Dems being as pathetic as repubs (which is true, they're all pathetic) could lead to enough ambivalence to get the job done for the reps

But again, there is nothing showing how Dems feel about Dems in Congress. Who is to say that this feeling isn't for Congress as a whole? I've seen three internal polls from clients of ours that does not spell the doom and gloom you think is going on. The numbers have dropped yes but we're not talking about mass defections. If anything immigration really put a hurting on both sides.

Maybe you'll believe this one:

Much of that drop was fueled by lower approval ratings of the Democrats in Congress among strong opponents of the war, independents and liberal Democrats.

While independents were evenly split on the Democrats in Congress in April (49 percent approved, 48 percent disapproved), now 37 percent said they approved and 54 percent disapproved. Among liberal Democrats, approval of congressional Democrats dropped 18 points.

But yet they still have 2/3 approval. This is par for what the GOP had from their ranks for quite some time under their control. Same for Bush. Overall the Dems are seen as taking a stronger leadership role than Bush as well. Still not seeing something to be concerned with. Numbers are still high. Nowhere near the level the GOP saw when Congress changed hands.
