Full Football Recruitment List All in One Place

Here is a very good post about our current roster situation provided by GoBigOrangeVols:

(in no particular order)

There are only 85 total scholarships allowed for any one season. This means we're going to probably allow 2-3 recruits go & possibly pick up one we really want on NSD. That's the way I see it anyhow. Thanks for that post GoBigOrangeVols.

I more think this means someone (or a couple guys) transfer out. Someone like Justin Martin comes to mind.

3* '17 TX QB Seth Washington committed to UT on 1-5-17 as a Preferred Walk-On. #29th ranked Dual-Threat QB.

With the addition of Washington this will give us 6 total QB's on the roster for 2017 unless there are any transfers.

I think that's plenty enough QB's to have just in case of injury in which we all know the injuries we endured in 2016. At least Dobbs was never injured in 2016 or we would have been in serious trouble. Thanks!

I want to explain the RB situation for 2017 a little. Officially for 2017 as of right now we have 8 RB's on the roster. Now, some of those are walk-ons. We really only have 2 RB's with any experience heading into 2017.

Those 2 RB's are John Kelly & Carlin Fils-Aime. We also have walk-on Stedman Love, Taeler Dowdy, Jayson Sparks, & Chip Omer. Add to those the 2 RB commits in Trey Coleman & Ty Chandler which makes 8 RB's.

Some would say that's plenty of RB's to have but keep in mind half of these are walk-ons & have no experience. Besides Kelly & Fils-Aime we have no experienced backs & we need to have at least 5 RB's on the roster that can come into the game in any situation & carry the ball without losing too much.

Right now, we really would only have 5 RB's that are capable of doing that. Kelly, Fils-Aime, Chandler, Coleman, & now Jordan. That's why I say we need to get one more RB.

I'm pretty sure that CBJ will but it's anyone's guess as to which RB he will go after the hardest to try & get a commitment. Here are some that might be a possibility:

1. Travis Etienne
2. Darrian Felix
3. Damon Williams
4. Kaegun Williams
5. Timothy Jordan (WKU de-commit & now Vol commit)
6. Johnathan Lovett
7. Bentavious Thompson

Those are the main ones in which scholarships have already been offered but there's probably a couple more CBJ has in mind just in case none of the above work out. Of the 6 RB's listed above Etienne & Felix are supposedly the ones most interested along with the newest one in Lovett.

Jordan is the sleeper one to me because of the de-commit recently from WKU. I think he could be the one that ends up being a Vol but in reality it could be any of these 7 RB's or even somebody else. Thanks!

4* '17 CA WR Jamire Calvin committed to Oregon State on 1-7-17. #40th WR & #287th ranked recruit overall in the 2017 class.

4* '17 TX OT Chuck Filiaga committed to Michigan on 1-7-17. #14th ranked OT & #98th ranked recruit overall.

4* '17 NV S Bubba Bolden committed to USC on 1-7-17. #6th ranked S & #55th ranked recruit overall.

5* '17 CB/WR Darnay Holmes committed to UCLA on 1-7-17. #2nd ranked CB & #12th ranked recruit overall.

5* TX S/CB Jeffrey Okudah committed to Ohio State on 1-7-17. #1st CB & #7th ranked overall recruit in the 2017 class.

I did not include 2 of the commits(RB Eno Benjamin & OT Foster Sarell) today from the Army All-American game because they were recruits in which we didn't make an offer.

Tonight, I want to go over our WR situation. The last position covered was at RB so I want to divulge a bit into what to expect at WR for 2017. Right now, we have 4 committed WR's for the 2017 season. Those 4 recruits are Jacquez Jones, Jordan Murphy, Cooper Melton(Preferred Walk-On), & Tyrik Stewart WR/S(Preferred Walk-on).

For the 2017 roster we will have the following WR's returning:

WR1 Jauan Jennings
WR2 Tyler Byrd
WR3 Josh Smith
WR4 Marquez Callaway
WR5 Latrell Williams
WR6 Jeff George
WR7 Brandon Johnson
WR8 Ben Powlas
WR9 Will Martinez
WR10 Jaye Rochell
WR11 B.J. Bishop
WR12 Logan Fetzner
WR13 Thomas Orradre

Some of the above WR's are Walk-Ons so won't even factor into the depth chart for 2017. I also listed them in no particular order after WR5. I think after WR5 we could have a number of guys fighting it out to see playing time.

With the 3 new WR commits coming in for 2017 this would be my best guess or opinion as to what the depth chart may look like for 2017 at WR. Of course, we could decide on taking another WR like Jeff Thomas, Nick Robinson, Kevaughn Dingle, JaVonta Payton, Austin Connor, Jordan Pouncey, Josh Palmer(Vol Commit) or Al'dontre Davis. I will have to come back to visit this situation if so but here's what I think we could see for 2017:

WR1 Jauan Jennings
WR2 Tyler Byrd
WR3 Josh Smith
WR4 Marquez Callaway
WR5 Brandon Johnson
WR6 Jordan Murphy (freshman)
WR7 Latrell Williams
WR8 Jacquez Jones (freshman)
WR9 Josh Palmer (freshman)
WR10 Jeff George
WR11 Cooper Melton (freshman Walk-On)
WR12 Tyrik Stewart (freshman Walk-On)

I listed the depth chart down to 12 WR's because we might would have to go that far down with injuries but we are going to hope & pray for no key injuries to not only any of the WR's but all positions. I think there's a chance Jordan Murphy could come in & possibly jump even a couple WR's I have listed ahead of him above.

He will be one of the three freshmen WR commits that will see the field at WR no matter what. It's questionable about the other 3 commits. They both may end up fitting in for some playing time but probably not a lot due to the depth we will have at the WR position.

Look for a few to take redshirts/blueshirts for 2017. The ones that won't see the field or have not used a redshirt. Thanks guys. I will talk about the QB's next time out in a post.

Edit: WR Princeton Fant will be the lone WR taking a blueshirt for 2017 season. He will not be available until 2018. He's been removed from the depth chart.

Now, onto the QB situation that we will be facing in 2017. We have two commits coming in as freshmen for 2017. They are Will McBride & Seth Washington(Preferred Walk-On). Both QB's are out of the state of Texas.

What QB's we have returning for 2017 are:

QB1 Quinten Dormady
QB2 Jarrett Guarantano
QB3 Sheriron Jones
QB4 Zac Jancek

We are finished with recruiting anymore QB's so the depth chart for QB's in 2017 are:

QB1 Quinten Dormady or Jarrett Guarantano
QB2 Jarrett Guarantano or Quinten Dormady
QB3 Sheriron Jones
QB4 Will McBride (freshman) or Zac Jancek
QB5 Zac Jancek or Will McBride
QB6 Seth Washington
(freshman)
QB7 Brandon Hines
(freshman)

Next up for discussion in a post tomorrow will be the OL. Thanks for viewing this thread & post guys.

Now, I want to talk about the OL situation for 2017 for a few minutes. We currently have the following OL commits for 2017:

1. Trey Smith
2. Riley Locklear
3. K'Rojhn Calbert
4. Nick White (Preferred Walk-On)

We have the following OL returning for 2017:

LT Drew Richmond
LG Jashon Robertson
C Coleman Thomas
RG Jack Jones
RT Chance Hall

5 listed above are probable starters. There's a decent chance that Trey Smith comes in & starts as well removing one of starters from above. Now, let's get into the backups for depth purposes. Other OL that could factor in from the 2016 returning group are:

Venzell Boulware, Austin Sanders, Brett Kendrick, Marcus Tatum, Ryan Johnson, Nathan Niehaus, DeVante Brooks, Thomas Edwards, Tommy Sprague, Brian Garvey, & Joe Keeler.

Some of the above players are walk-ons so wouldn't factor much into the depth chart. However, we seem to have quite a group of OL for 2017. Should have pretty nice depth but some are going to have to come around starting in spring practice.

It's not out of the realm of possibility too that CBJ gets another OL commitment either for 2017 but we would have 20 total OL for 2017 if not. I think as many as 12-14 OL could factor into the depth chart leaving a few walk-ons probably out of the mix.

One thing for sure we should have a very experienced starting 5. Plus, at least 3-4 of the backups(2nd string) having seen time on the field as well.

I would sum it up by saying our OL shouldn't be a major problem in 2017 unless the injury bug hits those positions. Thanks again & TE talk will be up in my next post.

Now, onto the TE situation for 2017. The new freshmen TE commits for 2017 are:

1. James Brown
2. LaTrell Bumphus (will start out at TE but can play DE)

That's a pretty thin group of TE's to bring in for 2017 & if it wasn't for Bumphus moving to TE we would only had 1 TE committed for 2017.

Now, onto the returning group of TE's for 2017. The following are the TE's that will be back for 2017:

Ethan Wolf, Jakob Johnson, Austin Pope, Will Jumper, Eli Wolf, & Andrew Craig. We should have a total of 8 TE's for 2017. Some are walk-ons just like on the OL. I really think James Brown will come in & have a great chance at seeing quite a bit of playing time.

Jakob Johnson has never adapted to the position change well at all & Ethan Wolf has been our only legit target in the receiving game at TE. Brown can change that immediately coming in as a freshman along with Bumphus.

Eli Wolf is another TE that could step up & see the field in 2017. Right now, I would have to lists the depth as the following for TE in 2017:

TE1. Ethan Wolf
TE2. James Brown (freshman)
TE3. Jakob Johnson
TE4. LaTrell Bumphus (freshman)
TE5. Austin Pope
TE6. Eli Wolf
TE7. Will Jumper
TE8. Andrew Craig

This should be the depth chart at TE for 2017 unless CBJ goes after another TE which is a possibility but not likely. Thanks again & next position/area up for chat is the DL.

One of our favorite 2018 recruits/targets. UT is listed 1st on his lists at this time. We need to go after him hard. He wants to be a Vol & we need to make it happen.

Sykes is listed 6th best RB in Georgia from 2016 in the link above & I'm sure he will be moving up come 2017.

Brandon Johnson will be 4th or 5th Wr

This is all debatable at this point. Spring practice hasn't even started at this point. I think we have guys a lot better than Johnson at WR so that's why I listed him 10thWR.

He could very will be up there at 4th or 5th spot by the time the 2017 season gets here but he didn't even make the field in 2016 for WR at all even in the blowout games I don't believe.

Jeff George is the one that disappointed me more than Johnson actually this past season. We'll see & I'm not saying you're wrong because this is all opinion but I just see better skillsets from the ones I have listed ahead of him. I do watch a ton of film as well. Thanks for posting & discussing this part of the thread. :good!:

He was injured before the season and he played in 3 games I belive with a few catches . To lazy to look it up but I know he played . If you remember the practice threads he was getting the most reps before the injury out of the freshman

I don't believe Johnson had any catches in 2016 but I know he was injured most of the season. That's going to hurt him going into 2017 with the depth we have at WR along with the experience. He's good enough to be as high as a #3 WR to me but he's not better than either Jennings or Byrd in my opinion & think that should be pretty clear to most everyone.

If Johnson puts in the work & time then yes we can see him quite a bit on the field come 2017. Otherwise, he's going to be about where I placed him somewhere between 7th-10th WR on the team.

I hope he works his way up to that 3rd WR position because we all know he has some talent to do it & Josh Smith has had groin surgery so he may not be the same. Thanks!

Johnson played 93 snaps, which is fifth (Jennings, Smith, Byrd, George) among returning WR's for next year. On those 93 snaps, he was targeted 9 times, which is fourth among returning receivers (Jennings, Smith, Byrd). He had 7 receptions on those nine targerts for 93 total yards. Our returning receivers in terms of yardage are as follows:

Jennings 552 yards
Byrd 216 yards
Smith 97 yards
Johnson 93 yards
George 20 yards
Callaway 13 yards

Edit: All of this data is from ProFootballFocus. They also calculate the QBR when throwing to each receiver. Here is the list of QBR's when each receiver is targeted.

Malone 145.1
Jennings 107.4
Smith 19.9
Byrd 91.7
Williams 56.3
George 57.6
Johnson 109.7
Callaway 47.9

As you can see, Johnson is second highest. Those numbers are inflated by the competition he faced (mostly Tennessee Tech), but I would say he is one of the most effective WR of the young group.

Now, I want to talk about or summarize the DL situation heading into 2017. We have 5 commits coming in as freshman as of right now for next season. Those 5 commits are: DT Eric Crosby, DT Kivon Bennett, DE Deandre Johnson, DE Matthew Butler, & DE Ryan Thaxton. Plus, we have another player/recruit in ATH DE/LB Marquez Bembry.

We have returning at DL for the 2017 season as follows: DE/DT Jonathan Kongbo, DT Shy Tuttle, DT Kahlil McKenzie, DT Kendall Vickers, DE Kyle Phillips, DE Darrell Taylor, DE/LB Austin Smith, DE Andrew Butcher, DT Quay Pico, DT Paul Bain, DE MykelleMcDaniel(suspended), DT Alexis Johnson, DT Joe Cave, DT Brandon Benedict, & DT/DE Charles Folger.

This makes a total of 23 DL we should have for 2017. That's if nothing changes come NSD or in the commitment or release category of current commits. Keep in mind, a number of the above players are walk-ons so probably won't factor into the depth chart or rotation.

Here's the way I see it on the DL for 2017:

DE1 Jonathan Kongbo
DE2 Kyle Phillips
DT1 Shy Tuttle
DT2 Kahlil McKenzie

DE3 Darrell Taylor
DE4 Austin Smith
DT3 Kendall Vickers
DT4 Alexis Johnson

DE5 Matthew Butler (freshman)
DE6 DeAndre Johnson (freshman)
DT5 Eric Crosby (freshman)
DT6 Kivon Mennett (freshman

DT7
Quay Picou
DT8 Paul Bain

DE7 ATH/DE/LB Marquez Bembry (freshman) or Mykelle McDaniel
DE8
Ryan Thaxton (freshman)
DT9 Brandon Benedict
DT10 Joey Cave

It's a guessing game as to where most of these players would stand in the depth chart for 2017. We certainly have a lot of DL but like I said quite a few are walk-ons & not on scholarship.

Having said that, there are a few also that will see the field & some playing time in 2017. Players like Paul Bain & Quay Picou who seen the field this past season as walk-ons. We have a lot of depth but not necessarily a case where we can plug anyone of the above players into a game & not lose anything.

I guess we have numbers on the DL more than we have depth you could say. CBJ might go after another DL or two on NSD or before in recruits like LaBryan Ray, Aaron Sterling, Romello Martin, Elijah Conliffe, Phidarian Mathis, Ryan Thaxton(Vol commit), Brandon Jones, Emmanuel McNeil, Jaylen Twyman, & Brad Johnson. Or, someone else they may have on their radar that they want to get.

Those are just a few that we could possibly land but probably no more than 2 additional DL commits. Anyhow, that's my view on the DL situation but the depth chart for 2017 could be all over the place that's for sure & that goes even for the starters because of injuries.

Thanks again for viewing this post & thread. Any comments are welcome but let's keep this a civil discussion please. Thanks!

Nice post but let me warn you a little about PFF(Pro Football Focus). They are known for making errors & putting out wrong/false information. I'm not saying they are here in what you have posted but they have done it quite a bit in the past.

Very interesting numbers though you have posted indeed. Like I said, Johnson could make his way to WR3 but I just don't see him passing Jennings or Byrd. Of course, Byrd will be used mostly as a slot WR. He will also probably be our main PR guy as well.

With Josh Smith having surgery he may not ever be the same so Johnson definitely has a shot at moving up the WR depth chart but he's behind the others because of his lost time due to injury.

I also think he & Jordan Murphy could end up battling it out for more playing time. Murphy is going to be a solid freshman WR. Sort of like the hype of Byrd coming in last year but not quite that much hype. Thanks!

As you can see, Johnson is second highest. Those numbers are inflated by the competition he faced (mostly Tennessee Tech), but I would say he is one of the most effective WR of the young group.

Good stuff. Do you have a link? I'd like to check it out. I typically enjoy the stuff they put out but haven't come across these stats. :hi:
