Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

I love the ever loving sh*t out of Phillip Fulmer and Johnny Majors. I was born in 77 so those are the only two real coaches I remember. It bothers me to no end to see what little respect they get on here. The argument could be made that they get bashed more than Dooley and Kiffin. What's funny is that many on here bashing Fulmer TRULY believed that we were better off with Dooley than Fulmer...well atleast until they didn't have a leg to stand on anymore.

It is so true, and to think, the bashing has actually decreased significantly over the last year.

LWS though made a revelation to me in another thread. It was not news to me that Hambone was actively trying to oust Fulmer for a long time (the nature of the contract extension in 2007 was all the proof anyone needed).

The revelation was that Hambone had Kiffin in-line for weeks and that was truly his master plan. And the nature of Lane's contract was such that Hambone was actually replacing our HoF coach with a septugenarian Defensive Coordinator.

We're witnessing how well Kiffin is getting on at his dream destination (esp. Daddy Kiffin). People still don't realize the damage Kiffin's one year did to this program. And many still don't realize how much he underperformed while here (and at USC) with the talent he inherited.

.

IIRC that contract had the win bar set at 8, which is pretty low. How was it directed at ousting CPF?

Certainly higher than anything achieved since, but moreover, an unprecedented milestone for wins written in the contract of a long serving coach.

Couple to that the outrageous buy-out, which was lubrication for Hambone's machinations, insisted upon by the powers-that-be, and any discerning Vol fan knew Hambone was up to no good.

Clearly, as LWS has pointed out, even if we didn't suffer the Clawfense and the worst 5* QB play of a generation, Hambone likely breaks the contract and gives the pay-out anyway.

What's more, despite the Clawfense and Crompton's fourth OC in as many years, Hambone had to move in mid-season in hopes we didn't make 6 - 6, get Crompton enough practice time to slow the game down for him, go 7 - 6 and then have an outrageous firing or scupper his plans altogether.

thanks for the elaboration.

the more i think about this i believe that the 8 wins may have predicated a bonus, not a condition of continuing employment. it has been a long time since i saw the terms of the contract.

i don't see how a $6mil buyout is an aid in ousting CPF, either. seems like one would negotiate a lower buyout if a firing was wanted. but LWS is usually money and i'm probably just missing a couple of the dots that connect all of this.

jmo, but a red flag went up when CPF managed to lose 3 games with a team that should have repeated as SEC champs in 99, another went up when UT found a way to lose the UF game in 00, a third went up when players were parading around with roses in their mouths after the UF win in 01 and before dumping to LSU in the SECC, and from that point fast forward to losing to Vandy at home in 05 to seal the losing season after preseason #3 ranking. i think that hammy pulled the trigger 3 years too late.

but, the above has no doubt been covered in some of the other 11,000 posts.

all CPF had to do that season was win. He didn't and got fired

thread is still funny after all this time

Not surprising, you've picked the dumbass side of an argument again.

I'm still waiting on that link in the other thread.

If disliking Alabama, Steve Spurrier and defending our past players and HOF x head coach is the Dumb ass side.....then yes I'm proud of it.

Back doored it like Georgia did last year!

Somehow a trip to the SEC Championship seems so much more extraordinary, irrespective of which door gets us there, doesn't it?

We went from that back door to cellar-dwelling. So, let's keep it real.

CPF never sucked like Dooley--with the former on his worst day and later on his best (if there was best for CDD).

Still, what matters here and now is that CBJ looks more like the real deal every day... and I'm no sunshine pumper. I can't even comprehend how he's doing what he is in recruiting already.

And, by all counts, the man can coach.

The next two seasons won't get us close to a back door trip to the SEC championship, but we'll see Vols being developed again... and three or four years out, the program could contend (back door or otherwise).

Nobody gives a damn how they get there, except those with an agenda against the man. Think Bama cares that they've "backdoored" into the NC game? Not a chance. So why do you care? Just some food for thought, though. Fulmer went to Atlanta every 3 years. We are now looking at 6 straight years without it. In other words, based on trends (which so many Fulmer haters like to use) we would be playing for the SEC this year.
