Fulmer debate extravaganza (merged)

It's funny. After the 05 debacle, people were on here saying that he should get another year or two to get us back on top. Now that those two years have come and gone with nothing to show for it

What do you mean? We were a couple of plays away from beating the national champions the last two years in a row!!!

Moral victories are just as good as actually winning!!!

I bet, in another 2-3 years, we'll lose to the future national champs by a couple of plays again!!! These are great days in Tennessee football!!!

However, Fulmer no longer has more talent then everyone else in the league save Florida. Georgia, LSU, and now Alabama will have as many talented players or more.

Coaches are a little different as well.

He's no longer facing a bunch of schlubs week after week.

A good staff and lots of talent can hide a lot of faults in the head coach. I'm interested in how the new OC works out, what I've read sounds good.

Chavis hasn't looked good of late. He doesn't seem to be able to coach well against a spread offensive scheme that are becoming more popular. I doubt he see's anything but that against Florida and Alabama as long as he's DC. It's not going to take long before the rest of the league figures out how to play against a Chavis coached defense.

The league continues to evolve and change, and you either stay in step or step aside, that's the bottom line.

That's why I've always respected JoePa. He was never set in his ways. Even though he's starting to get snappy with reporters these days.

Chavis's inability to answer the spread is what concerns me the most. As much as it pains me to say it, I would be ok if Phil stayed and got rid of Chavis and Slade. Really the only guy that deserves to stay on D is Brooks. If Chavis cant answer the spread this year, well, considering the way we do things he'll probably get a raise.

Forget stopping the spread, let's just start with stopping Tebow....

Those runs in '06 on 4th down, still bother me

The sad thing is... with all the talent we've seen shuffled through this university over the last decade ... we are having this needing to have this conversation at all.

I'm a die hard vol fan but I'm facing the facts and not expecting another Fulmer team to win any title. It's my way of not trying to get my hopes up after they get dashed each year when we play Florida.

If Fulmer ever gets this team to the top again, good for him and I'll be thrilled.

I'm just not banking on it.

Do you honestly think tenn has always had more talent than lsu, ga, ala, etc. I am sure that these teams will almost always have more talent than us. We have just been able to play more physical and beat these teams in the past.

Absolutely.

LSU- definately more talent. At least till Saban got a few classes in there.

Georgia- definately more talent. Till probably around the 2002 then it started to equal out.

Alabama- again, I'd say more talent.

When Fulmer was on his 4 year run (95-98)Tennessee and Florida were in a class of their own. Everyone else was at a talent disadvantage.

good post

I think he deserves about a 7 year extension and about a million a year raise......who's with me????

Guys, they very fact that App St. can beat Michigan proves that all teams are moving closer to each other... In this day and age there are more incredible athletes than before and the worse teams are getting better. We are still a great football team. God forbid we go 9 years without winning the NC....
I hope all of you realize that by firing fulmer we would be making our program worse... Fulmer is the one who brought UT back to national prominence and all we can do in appreciation is fire him??? COME ON!!!
OH! and fyi! Fulmer has a higher win percentage than Spurrier so enough of those comparisons... Honestly idc how many times he beats us, they have just as many NCs and fulmer has a higher win %, not to mention Fulmer is possibly the most honorable man to have as a coach.

Peace OUT!

The above post is Exhibit 1 as to why our fan base deserves the garbage we've been getting for the last nine seasons.

look i want to win as much as all of you, but your expectations have to be reasonable. Fulmer has taken us to national prosperity and you expect more? What do you want, God to coach us?
Oh and hatvol, that quote was kinda important in context... If you would honestly rather be in spurriers position than fulmers you have no right to knock on others intelligence.

I also want to make sure it is clear that i am not intending to offend ANYONE. The last thing i want to do is push apart people with a common love of UT athletics. I just adamantly believe that we have a class act as our coach and that we must stick with him through this down period (if you want to call 2nd best in the toughest conference that).

I have every right to knock people who can't properly punctuate and claim they don't care how often an opposing coach beats the pork fat out of the oaf we have on the sidelines. Spurrier's winning percentage has been distorted by coaching at Duke and South Carolina, two places where Fulmanure would have been fired within three years. Check the man's career record against Spurrier, Saban, and Tuberville. That tells you all you need to know. He doesn't have Brad Scott and Ray Goff to beat up on anymore.
