FULMER - Due Respect!…..

Maybe he didn't want anything else. He was getting older.

He got some calls but did not pursue them. I know that happened.

So you're saying you don't know why that is as well? I do know this, if someone wants YOU as a HC, the offer gets sweet enough you can't refuse to go. Apparently none of those calls you cite were of that variety.

Fulmer does deserve our respect for what he did on the field. However all any Vol fan needs to know was after he was gone, not nary a single other P5 program in the country was willing to make him their HC, not one wanted him!!

There's a reason for that. I'm not sure I know why or what the truth was behind it, however it's as much of his legacy as his NC win.

IIRC he stated it had to be an ideal situation or he wouldn’t accept it.

Too bad there wasn’t another Johnny Majors out there to hand over a program that had made the AP top 10 in 7 of the 8 previous years and won 2x conference championships in the previous 4.

Fulmer’s legacy as a head ball coach would have been far more impressive had he taken over a bad program and built it up to a nationally competitive level.

I could not agree more!

The money he has been paid is actually minuscule compared to the increase in value he brought to the University, especially the football program. If truth be told, we are still indebted to the man!

If not for Fulmer, we woul have two less SEC Championships and one less national title. The guy only had two losing seasons in 16 years as a coach! That’s all; just two! And, add in those two SEC championships and NC plus playing for two more SEC championships. We still owe the man! Bring to Neyland Stadium a statue and do more than just name a street after him!
So Fulmer is the only coach who could have won a national title here in the 1990s?

Yep. You're a troll

From whom? He went public on a few occasions saying he wanted to coach again. He did interview for the Kansas job. There is an article out there detailing his interview

They never got that far. He was not interested in leaving Maryville at the time. Kids and grandkids.

I know Louisville, Arkansas, Iowa St and Kansas all contacted him at points in time. But talks never went anywhere. As I said, don't believe he ever considered leaving family. Why none of those went far.

I think that was the knock on him getting any big offers. When a school is looking for a coach they are usually looking for someone to completely rebuild their program. Something that Fulmer had not done. He was handed the keys to a Mercedes in 1992.

Why did he interview at Kansas? Why did he say on multiple occasions he wanted to keep coaching? Of course, that was not long after he was fired and I believe he got somewhat of a rude awakening ast how he was perceived by the rest of the country

He was a good coach that got the HC job here at the right time. Maintained the program at a high level for a long time. Should have been given a couple more years before he was fired. Became AD during a very difficult time (probably over his head but it was a rushed hire). Had slim picking finding a HC and it was also rushed so don’t blame him for the Pruitt hire. I thought his AD oppointment was suppose to be temporary and if he had quit then, then he would be deserving of accolades. I don’t think anyone predicted things would get as bad as they did.
I do believe his lack of experience as AD led to not monitoring Pruitt’s bag money (or maybe he was aware and just looked the other way). He got a really sweet deal to retire from the AD position which he didn’t deserve IMO so my feeling are pretty neutral about him (mostly very good with a pretty bad stain).

I don’t have a clue how anyone makes an intelligent analysis of the AD exit strategy without a more solid fact set than I have seen. It does not seem logical for his bosses, who had to have more post investigation info, to provide the golden parachute unless they were sure he was squeaky clean. Rewarding a guilty guy would look like coverup.

Selling Pruitt as the top of the rot, rather than a ranking admin has to reduce institutional control risk. Just pushing him out the door without the fanfare would create doubt. They had to be believers to take this route.

No way a sitting AD could have made the strides a replacement could anticipating the usual snail pace NCAA investigation. THUS the CPF new long term AD needs to hire the next coach position at the presser.

I believe they will double down on his involvement at the end of the road when risk is at zero to solidify the support of all the athletes that remain solidly at his side. They will have a better read on the WHOLE TRUTH than the rest of us.

As LWSVOL says above, Hamilton was worse. He did serious damage to the entire UT athletic dept. Fulmer's tenure was too short to do that much damage. I believe he would have gotten better if he had remained but the damage was done with Pruitt and his UT career is over.

I believe Fulmer would have gotten worse if he stayed longer, his ego was bigger than his stomach!

Minds change. Situations change. You say things today and three days later, it could be different.

He built the program he inherited. We were not what we were until he became the OC and assistant head coach.

A Mercedes that he built. Come on man, give hime credit.

If Hamilton had just given him a sabbatical, he would have picked right back up and had us back at the level of elite.

If Assistant Coach Fulmer gets the credit for Head Coach Majors’ success then I guess Assistant Coach Cutcliffe gets all the credit for Head Coach Fulmer’s success. Now spin CJM’s NC at Pittsburg.

A sabbatical? That’s hilarious. TN would have been laughed at.

Fulmer stood up on Majors shoulders. Then he took the program further and won a nattie. For that, I am very grateful and will always have positive feelings for Fulmer. However, the concentration of talent that he had here for years probably should have resulted in more championships, but he grew complacent, IMO. That takes a little luster off of his shine. And then, the fiasco with Pruitt really damaged his rep. All things said, I'm grateful for the nattie but still scratching my head about the rest of it.

I think you have to consider the dumpster fire situation surrounding the Pruitt hire. Tn was being laughed at for the hiring and then rapid firing of the Penn st assist. coach, so I think Fulmer was just pressed to fill that spot and help tamp down the hoop-la at that time. I remember the Fulmer years as a coach where TN was almost always in the talk for a national championship. Tn shouldn't have fired him until it had a solid head coach with a strong resume to replace him.

Posted this on another thread but maybe it should have been here. In my view, the Pruitt situation makes Fulmer look awful. Either he knew about it and was complicit or he failed to monitor the worst coach and biggest cheater in modern UT history. Either way it looks bad. I hate it but I just can’t see another scenario.

An AD'S job is largely these 4 items

1. Create culture to ensure compliance with NCAA rules (Grade: Epic Fail)

2. Money/Budgeting (Fell from top 10 to near 20 in annual revenue. Passed by several rival schools)

3. Hiring (Pruitt and Kelly. Pruitt was an epic failure and Kelly wouldn't have been hired here if she didn't play for Pat)

4. Firing (Extended Holly when it was clear that had run its course and extended Pruitt after GSU)

Fulmer got lucky UCLA got cheap since he neglected that relationship with Barnes. Of course, that meant Barnes had him by the balls and negotiated an over market deal..
