FULMER - Due Respect!…..

I know Louisville, Arkansas, Iowa St and Kansas all contacted him at points in time. But talks never went anywhere. As I said, don't believe he ever considered leaving family. Why none of those went far.
I'm pretty sure Arkansas offered him the job

People around here tend to forget that CPF had four SECe championships, two SEC championships and one National Championship during his time.

Just think if we would have just given him a one year sabbatical. I’m certain he would have come back rejuvenated and as hungry as before!

Only two coaches in Tennessee Vols football history have won even a single national title. One of them was the General, who brought home three or four, depending on how you count them.

The other is Philip. He's not a rock star. He was a talented player, but as a lineman he was not in the limelight. As a head coach, he "only" won one national title (and two SEC crowns). He was linked in history with a fella, Spurrier, who always seemed to be one step ahead. And then he was a bust as AD.

In spite of that, the man is still the second-best coach in Vols football history. He won three-fourths of his games, even with a couple of bad years among the 16 seasons he was in charge.

Those of us who lived through his tenure owe the man some warm regard, which seems to be more than a significant cabal here are willing to grant. It hurts nothing to say, "thanks, Coach, we appreciate you." Doesn't take a statue. Just a bit of courtesy to someone who gave us nice things.

Thanks, Coach Fulmer. We appreciate what you did for us. Some of us remember.

Go Vols!
This is pretty accurate and fair in my opinion.

His time as AD is completely separate discussion.

Just interim. He was much older at time
61. Yes, too old to revive their program. They were at a low point at the time. That wasn't his schtick at the time.

Right after his dismissal, he stated publicly he still had the fire and was ready to go somewhere else. The Notre Dame job was available and I'm sure if they would have come forth, he would have jumped at it. They didn't pursue him. His agent inquired. For whatever reason, they weren't interested. ND fired Weiss the same year.

I think that first year you're right, he might have done something. After that he was really picky about options for a few years. By 4 or 5 years after, grandkids ruled.

That was my sense whenever I saw him...

Mack Brown revived North Carolina from a low point. Their expectations are far less than Tennessee's and he has absolutely exceeded their bar for competitive significance

I doubt anybody is forgetting those championships. The key words in your post are “during his time”. In his “time”, he did a great job. Problem was his “time” had passed. Too complacent and didn’t work hard enough his last 5 years. And please tell us how a one year “sabbatical” would work?

He should have retired after the National Championship like his wife wanted and turned it over to coach Cutt.

All he did after 98 was coast and try to get more wins than the General.

Fulmer was the recruiter, but coach Cutt was the secret sauce as the team got worse when he went to ole miss and then improved when he came back and then back down when he went to duke.

By the time Fulmer was fired he had run the team into the ground and no one wanted the job.

Then he returns and runs it into the ground again as AD.

I view him as a net negative as far as his involvement in the program and that coach Cutt as being the real positive force in the program.

I’m sure many will disagree with me, but that is how I view it after living through it all.
NOT; no one wanted to work for an AD who fired a coach with 70% win record. Mike Hamilton was jealous of Fulmer making more money and Hamilton did more to destroy UT football than anybody

I don't think he gets a statue. I think you have to win multiple national championships as a coach to be worthy of a statue. Jmo
How’d Bo Schembechler get one then…without winning ANY?

Ok, I'll play.

Why did no one want to hire a coach with a 70% win record?

Don't most football coaches in the SEC make more than the AD?

I will not defend Hamilton as I agree he was part of the problem, but Fulmer was also part of the problem as he was just doing time trying to get more wins than the General and he was in coast mode.

No. It was a year after the firing. He was offered the East Carolina job before the year prior to replacing Majors. Some said Clemson and Auburn offered to him as well, but those were never reported like the ECU offer
I think we’re talking different timelines. He was never a candidate at Arkansas after being let go here.

They supposedly reached out to him in 2010 or 2011. I remember it vividly. They were coming off a terrible year. I would almost bet you could find it somewhere in this site's archives

If you “remember it vividly” there should be an existing link.
I got it wrong. Sorry. I just googled it. There was an article saying they reached out, but Fulmer was asked about it and said if they offered he would jump all over it. Apparently they never actually offered. Clay Travis had him on 104.5 the zone

I think Fulmer deserves some credit for building that program as well. He had a lot to do with recruiting and coaching before he became the head coach.
The Johnny Majors saga sped up because Fulmer was becoming a hot commodity in the HC searches. Johnny never helped himself. Fulmer proved it was the correct move, even if it was bitter.
I believe firing Fulmer was a legit option, but the decisions going forward were fraught.

The Butch hire made sense. He looked like a coach on the rise. I never would have guessed that Jancek was so huge in creating that image, until he was forced out.

Most people don’t forget that and if they did, his worshippers would start these threads and remind us . It doesn’t erase the bad he did.
