'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

TBH, Kirby is destroying our staff right now in recruiting. This class as it is absolutely sucks. It's rated fairly high right now because of the sheer number of commits compared to every one else. In past years it would average out in the 20-25 range when all is said and done. People will probably think I'm crazy, but they may need to figure out a way to get someone on the staff after this season who can go into Georgia and do some serious damage like a Rodney Garner type.

Butch must win big this fall. Clemson, UGA, etc...they're all out there negative recruiting vs. UT..."Butch can't win the big games, they don't use WR's correctly, they will suck again this year and Butch will be fired, look how awesome we've been lately etc..."

Up until now Butch has only been able to sell early PT, build UT back, trust our process etc...but these elite kids see Clemson in the big game, UGA has Kirby flashing a handful of rings, and Butch is still just selling facilities, tradition, a process, and an increase of two wins each season he's been at UT. That's not enough anymore.

These kids have elite recruiters from those other schools in their ears saying, "We've proven ourselves, come win big over here, Butch still hasn't proven anything and he'll fail this year, don't go there, come here and win..."

Clemson was a joke early in Dabo's career but he recruited well, built talented depth and WON. Butch has recruited well, built talented depth and now he needs to WIN. And not just 9 games. He needs to beat UF, UGA and get to Atlanta. If he does that all the negative recruiting doesn't work anymore, Butch has proof of big wins and that his process has worked....and recruiting will take off.

Bottom line is Butch must win the East this fall. Period.

I don't understand how so many people believe that if we win 10+ games, all of these elite guys that seem to be going elsewhere ATP, will suddenly be knocking down butch's door to commit.

Sure it'll help with some, but it won't just magically give us a top 5 class (like everyone said 17 would be after a mediocre class last year)

whats Kirby gonna sell when they lose the first game against UNC in the Ga Dome? Thats gonna be a bad look and sets them up for a rough year.

georgia is not selling that, they are selling what Butch sold in 2013.

Yep, things will start going south fast if we drop the big ones this year. The roster is not only talented and experienced, its well balanced.

I know right, we better stop filling all the spots with Sunbelt players, because after our championship run we will have so many studs lined up to commit we will have to drop half the class.

It's not like our roster is stocked full of 5 star guys... Mostly 3 and 4, yet we have competed with the team's who have been top 10 or 5 recruiting over the past 5-7 years.

Now I want to get the best players available and win the recruiting perspective of many too, but the fact is our team has overperformed, over developed from their star ratings and our coaches have done an amazing job of spotting talent.

Wow, the mattress ain't lit yet but it's soaked with lighter fluid and ready for the match.....

I think we will have a great season on the field. I'm not worried much at all in fact. If we aren't playing for an SEC title I'll be shocked. Recruiting is year round. Yes, even in July. Playing for SEC titles beyond 2016 hinges on recruiting. Yes, even in July as targets are coming off the board.

Coaches need to recruit year round, but no one is off the board until December for EE and February otherwise. So no, recruiting is not year round in the way that you're saying.

The argument keeps changing whether this class will end as a top five or if internally the staff can't recruit.

It's two completely different subjects.
We will improve this year but I have no clue how much.
But the argument that winning big won't change how we do in recruiting from now on is absolutely absurd.

There is a reason that Clemson jumped out of the gate so strong this year, and despite that laughable theories on here, it's not because of internal workings.

Yes, recruits flip. We've benefited from it. Banking on flipping guys who you're obviously behind on isn't something I'd sit back and hope works out. Especially when fans think these recruits are in wait and see mode, as they are committing elsewhere in July. If they are waiting, looks like it's news to them.

Bignewt is convinced that no recruit is a big deal. Maybe in a vacuum he's right, but saying it miss after miss is a little delusional.

Someone did not read the whole post. Losing out a couple of DBs is not a big deal in my mind.

Now, come FEBRUARY if we don't get Akers or Chandler, or someone who isn't at their level, I will feel disappointed.

If we don't add a bit more to our DL/DE haul, I will feel disappointed.

If we don't get a highly touted LB, I will be disappointed.

Do I expect any of that? No. I think we have a big year and we become hot on and off the field.

Am I gonna piss and moan in July with so many targets still out there? No.

Will our class be top 15? I would bet yes.

Top 10? Quite possibly. Names are gonna be out there this fall, just wait on it.

The lack of faith on this board is alarming, especially with the most potentially exciting year in the last 20 coming on strong. Isn't this part of the bible belt?

A lot of people (maybe rightfully so) are hard on ZA, but our recruiting has been noticeably less effective since RG became recruiting coordinator. I know we have Welton and all that, but traditionally the RC has been very important in class planning and recruiting strategies.

It may be nothing, but just trying to reconcile the "downturn."

Downturn?

Coach G was RC before last year's class was signed. No downturn there. 247 composite average slightly above the prior 2 years. This year's signing class is more than 6 months out. 6 MONTHS. Guys will get bumped, guys will get dropped, guys will get added, we'll have a successful season, etc. But yeah, completely fair to call it a downturn and cast blame. :eek:k:

Because very rarely do recruits think that way. "If team A beats team B & C, then I'm going to decommit from team B & jump on board with team A".

A good season on the field isn't going to destroy the relationship Gibbs has with UGA staff. They're not going to be a pushover on the field either. If we have similar seasons on the field, why would Gibbs all of a sudden flip?

Correct. People only start following recruiting when they join Volnation. Actually, in 2011 was when I discovered we had so many betas in our fan base. It started to make sense to me as to why Tennessee lost so many big games they should have won. It was the loser mentality of the fans that the coaches and players had to overcome. Quite the disadvantage when you consider other fan bases and how they support their programs.

I think this is a big reason for that lack of faith. We haven't had this much hype since I've been old enough to remember, everybody in the country says lookout for Tennessee to make noise in the SEC, potential dark horse national championship contender...but recruiting is struggling big time.

This one will sting. Terrible luck this class. Butch and Co need big wins and some draft picks to be able to sell and fast. Running into teams that are flashing their rings and draft picks in face of kids and pointing at us choking big games last yr with no draft picks
