Hey, I like last year's class too. I hesitate typing something so hypothetical, but it's a reasonable conclusion to say that if we had signed a full class, the average would have been lower, maybe considerably so. I mean, you have to think they weren't turning away the cream of the crop. So that's why I said we can get into this debate all day long.

But regardless of that, you have to concede that this year's- while yes, very early- is lower across all of those metrics. Yes, it can, and may very well rebound, but all we have to go on right now is how it's trending, and if you are hanging out in a recruiting forum in July, you have to be up for that discussion.

You have a very valid point with regard to the rating, I will give you that. But from Butch's first full recruiting cycle to this one, I just don't see how the term "downturn" is such a left field description for you.

While I don't recall the blue shirt guys rankings, I do believe if you factor those in as those guys are the ones who figure into those spots(3-4 spots), it would decrease the star average.

When your entire identity as an adult male is wrapped up in whether an 18 year old kid commits to UT, you tend to get salty.

No, I don't b*tch and whine like the NegaVols do everytime they think an recruit will go elsewhere. And you guys call yourself "true fans"? Pshhhh.

If you concede that last year's class is not part of this "downturn," then we strictly look at this class compared to the previous 3.

I'll agree it is not on par with what was hyped by many leading into the year. But, it is July. Jones has always closed strong, and we are still in on some big names (Smith, Akers, Gibbs, Chandler). And there will be more big names arise over the course of the season.

For those expecting a number 1 recruiting class, they will still be disappointed. I was expecting a strong recruiting class. I am not disappointed yet, and I don't expect to be disappointed in February. Also, I still think it will be around a top 10 recruiting class for the star-gazers.

So far, we have missed on 2 big recruiting targets (Higgins and EJ). We were runner up in both situations. If our other big targets let the year play out, I think we will win out those close battles. I'm optimistic until this coaching staff gives me a reason not to be. They can recruit and develop talent.

Well since EJ is 18 class I'll say we misses on just 1 😂

I'm not sure his exact reasoning. I just don't think a good season on the field is the magical cure for a top 5 class like some seem to think.

Other teams will have good years too.

Your thinking is very narrow. I'm not saying a team's success year to year carries that much weight. I'm saying a program that has done NOTHING in these kids' lifetimes is a barrier to recruiting, and once we win big and prove we're not a perennial 8 win team, Butch will be successful in recruiting as he has been. UGA doesn't have that barrier. Their W/L in one year doesn't affect their recruiting because they've proven they can compete at the top. We haven't. You don't get good recruits unless you're selling proven success or playing time, and we can't sell playing time anymore. Butch has proven his recruiting prowess, now he needs to remove the "Tennessee doesn't have big seasons" objections, so his proven recruiting ability can pay off.

Wonder if Gibbs understands he was #2 on their safety board behind Stevens? Reason being, there looks to be an direct correlation in Gibbs's interest in GA and Stevens interest in LSU/Alabama.

I'll say it again. Anyone who claims to be a Tennessee fan after the last decade is most certainly a "true fan."

No front runners here.

Had we beat UF last year, the class would be top 10. Add OU to that and it's top 5. Doesn't matter whether we actually met expectations, the perception is that we didn't and we didn't because of coaching. Add to that the lawsuit, lack of draftees for 2 years, and an apparent inability to pass the ball, and you have a formula for mediocre recruiting. You've given your competitors a full bag of negative recruiting tools, and all it takes is a small bit of doubt to leave us out when it's down to us and CU or UGA or whomever. Despite references to beating UGA last year, they are legitimately a clean slate now. And even though WVU just scored on Clemson again, somehow Dabo got past that. Fine, we will too.

Here's where we may be in 4 months: UGA no longer a clean slate. Clemson may or may not have the clean run they did last season. Lawsuit settled, Dobbs should have better luck with a more mature WR corps, and 120 should put to rest the questions about whether CBJ can win. The calculus could change dramatically. Might be good. Might be bad. But geez, put stop cutting yourselves and put the razors down.

I have no doubt it will turn a couple guys, but I think we will see the fruition of a successful year in 2018.

I agree with this. If we had beat Florida OR Bama OR Okie last year, then this class would be much different. Take care of business this year and watch 18 be a top five class. Got to win against the big boys. Georgia was a nice win but needed at least one bookend.

We're listed in many players' top 2 or 3 for a reason, they like what we have. The doubts about coaching are a big issue causing us to end up as #2, and a big year will resolve that well enough to win in a greater percentage of the cases.

Says the one who spews out negative crap all over this board. I'm probably more of a Tennessee fan than you ever will be. You're probably on UGA boards right now celebrating over an possible Gibbs commitment.

The old " I'm more of a UT fan than you" always puts people in their place.
