'17 GA ATH DeAngelo Gibbs

Because very rarely do recruits think that way. "If team A beats team B & C, then I'm going to decommit from team B & jump on board with team A".

A good season on the field isn't going to destroy the relationship Gibbs has with UGA staff. They're not going to be a pushover on the field either. If we have similar seasons on the field, why would Gibbs all of a sudden flip?

Because we're going to destroy Georgia...going to hurt em bad! And it wouldn't be a "flip"...has he committed? :hmm:

And I will be I guess the last person on here to say its not "struggling big time."

People, especially VN are like police dogs that have to latch on to the negative and thrash about for dear life. Take a step back for a second and look at the calendar, the implications of the season and finally the big picture. Its gonna be ok by NSD I promise. If not I will go away and all the neg nancys can rejoice.

It's not like our roster is stocked full of 5 star guys... Mostly 3 and 4, yet we have competed with the team's who have been top 10 or 5 recruiting over the past 5-7 years.

Now I want to get the best players available and win the recruiting perspective of many too, but the fact is our team has overperformed, over developed from their star ratings and our coaches have done an amazing job of spotting talent.

This.

Our roster breakdown from 247 composite (scholarship players):

1 - 5*
38 - 4*
38 - 3*
1 - 2*
1 - Walk On

Downturn?

Coach G was RC before last year's class was signed. No downturn there. 247 composite average slightly above the prior 2 years. This year's signing class is more than 6 months out. 6 MONTHS. Guys will get bumped, guys will get dropped, guys will get added, we'll have a successful season, etc. But yeah, completely fair to call it a downturn and cast blame. :eek:k:

Blame? Even the word downturn was quoted. And when you go from 7th to 4th to 14th to probably 15ish in the rankings, that's a downturn. We can rehash what it means as far as rankings vs composite ratings vs numbers all we want, and who knows, the 2016 class as a group may be the best one to ever sign here, but hey, that's what a downturn is.

Sorry to offend though. We should probably just put a gag order on all recruiting discussion until after the first Wednesday in February, because it's all speculative till then anyway, right?

I've never been negative on here. I was one of the last few Dooley supporters even after the UK loss luuuulz.

I have faith recruiting will pick up. I believe we'll win the east this year as well. But to even the most positive people, recruiting to this point, has to at least have them raising an eyebrow. I think that's completely fair to say.

Maybe not declare FAILURE before it's official? :dunno: Nah...too radical.

So you know for sure that Gibbs favors UGA because of his relationships, and not because he's unsold on whether or not Tennessee coaches have what it takes to win?

Butch must win big this fall. Clemson, UGA, etc...they're all out there negative recruiting vs. UT..."Butch can't win the big games, they don't use WR's correctly, they will suck again this year and Butch will be fired, look how awesome we've been lately etc..."

Up until now Butch has only been able to sell early PT, build UT back, trust our process etc...but these elite kids see Clemson in the big game, UGA has Kirby flashing a handful of rings, and Butch is still just selling facilities, tradition, a process, and an increase of two wins each season he's been at UT. That's not enough anymore.

These kids have elite recruiters from those other schools in their ears saying, "We've proven ourselves, come win big over here, Butch still hasn't proven anything and he'll fail this year, don't go there, come here and win..."

Clemson was a joke early in Dabo's career but he recruited well, built talented depth and WON. Butch has recruited well, built talented depth and now he needs to WIN. And not just 9 games. He needs to beat UF, UGA and get to Atlanta. If he does that all the negative recruiting doesn't work anymore, Butch has proof of big wins and that his process has worked....and recruiting will take off.

Bottom line is Butch must win the East this fall. Period.

Ron with the home run again.

I'm not sure his exact reasoning. I just don't think a good season on the field is the magical cure for a top 5 class like some seem to think.

Other teams will have good years too.

raising of an eyebrow on here is the understatement of the year. Good thing its only July.

This is almost unbelievable.
The recruiting rankings are visible for everyone to see.
It's not some grand deep thinking process that all the teams on the top just had success or have a record of success.

Internal workings and forgot how to recruit theories. Please.
Why don't you guys stop digging through files in the basement trying to come up with these conspiracy theories and just look at what's right in front of you. Win, the kids come. It's really not any more complicated than that.

It's important for us to have a good year- and the right good year, winning 10 games without winning the East is pretty much the same as last year's good year- but I think just as important to our future recruiting success is if Georgia really stumbles. If Smart shows he is the second coming of Ray Goff, that would be very good for us, as long as we take care of business.

we have DBs for days, he sees the field quicker at UGA even if it is on the losing end of a bunch of beatdowns. Or defensive backfield is young and deep. There are more important areas that I am far more concerned about. RB. DL. LB. Not gonna worry about this one.

Tend to agree here

Someone did not read the whole post. Losing out a couple of DBs is not a big deal in my mind.

Now, come FEBRUARY if we don't get Akers or Chandler, or someone who isn't at their level, I will feel disappointed.

If we don't add a bit more to our DL/DE haul, I will feel disappointed.

If we don't get a highly touted LB, I will be disappointed.

Do I expect any of that? No. I think we have a big year and we become hot on and off the field.

Am I gonna piss and moan in July with so many targets still out there? No.

Will our class be top 15? I would bet yes.

Top 10? Quite possibly. Names are gonna be out there this fall, just wait on it.

The lack of faith on this board is alarming, especially with the most potentially exciting year in the last 20 coming on strong. Isn't this part of the bible belt?

Good points. But, There are targets, and then there's the big targets. The big targets are already picking or leaning towards other schools.

This class Butch has put together so far is good, but we thought it was going to a lot better. It's the start of fall practice - it's time to piss and moan

And we landed Theo Jackson...WHO IS! :w00t: Why aren't he and his driver Brandon celebrating? :yahoo:

Brandon isn't the name of his "driver". I'm sure he would correct you, but he's probably forgotten his name. . .

Not looking at rank but rather at average, last year was Jones' best class. The rank was lower due to the size. You didn't offend me. You're wrong. But please keep on keepin' on.

No. Its Jacob. I just like the stories Butchna tells. Keeps things interesting.

Our depth at the position in young talent does lessen the sting as I don't see him being a CB. That is part of why sites have been dropping him is his CB play. He is a Saftey and we got a logjam there if high level talent. We got Gray coming in and Labruzza/Jackson can play S. I still think there is a chance Byrd makes his way back to S at some point in his career here whether it is as a two way guy or he just ends up too good not to play at S compared to WR.

The biggest hurt for me is our competition gets a high level talent and he was practically a lock mths ago

Hey, I like last year's class too. I hesitate typing something so hypothetical, but it's a reasonable conclusion to say that if we had signed a full class, the average would have been lower, maybe considerably so. I mean, you have to think they weren't turning away the cream of the crop. So that's why I said we can get into this debate all day long.

But regardless of that, you have to concede that this year's- while yes, very early- is lower across all of those metrics. Yes, it can, and may very well rebound, but all we have to go on right now is how it's trending, and if you are hanging out in a recruiting forum in July, you have to be up for that discussion.

You have a very valid point with regard to the rating, I will give you that. But from Butch's first full recruiting cycle to this one, I just don't see how the term "downturn" is such a left field description for you.
