'19 GA CB Warren Burrell (Tennessee signee)

I don't agree, on the surface taking Harrison was a head scratcher, till you actually consider the facts about the kid, and not just a service ranking that takes none of that into account

True, he seems to have elite measurable if those are accurate. Some guys that we have committed have very weak offer lists. That is concerning. Maybe Harrison and Clemons will rack up offers now that Pruitt has taken their commitment. But then there are other guys who are low ranked, like Burrell, who have offers from everyone. Those guys aren't concerning at all and are probably underrated by the recruiting services. But when a guy's best offer is GT or something, that's a head scratcher.

But, Pruitt saw them camp so we have to hope that those guys are SEC caliber players.

Didn't one of them say the other day that they don't want to change one recruit's star ranking because it will mess up the position rankings? Ridiculous these sites even exist much less garner the credence they get.

Yes, I really should redo the first paragraph to my term paper. But if I do, I'll have the rewrite the whole thing and that's a lot of extra work.

I'm not opposed to taking Burrell. Make no mistake about that. I'm just saying this class as a whole is accumulating a lot of 3-star players which is a little surprising to me. It wasn't long ago that I was making fun of Mullen for this.
so, by that logic, CJP should pass on anything less than a 4 *? go by the services ratings and evaluations for his system?

to what end, make fans feel better about the mythical recruiting rankings?

I get what you're saying, but to offer a counter point, Pruitt held camps like this at Georgia, Alabama, and at Florida State. He evaluated talent at these places just like he is here. Very few of the commitments he took at these places were 3 stars with little offers. Did he take some while there? I'm sure he did take some, but for the most part they were highly ranked players that everyone wanted. I don't think it's asking too much, even following a 4-8 season, to ask that we sign a much better class than SC or MS State. I'm sure that if we're honest all of us would rather have Nolan Smith than Jalil Clemons in this class. I'm sure coach would also. Hopefully these players help us and then after we start winning we can recruit with the Ga's and Bama's of this world. But it isn't too much to ask for us to sign a top 5-10 ranked class, even following 4-8. We are Tennessee and we have the highest recruiting budget in the country with one of the best coaching staffs in the country.

Sooo...you wait till a lot of others get on them, and you are behind the eight ball?

No...if you feel the dude is quality then you take him...services be danged.

Looking at our record last year and what we have done the last ten, yes it is too much to ask. I swear you guys act just an entitled as a kid playing ball at Independence CC.

Pruitt is recruiting with NOTHING to show. NOTHING. And you want him to finish top 5 in the country? Say that to yourselves in the objective mirror and come back.

And this is probably what Pruitt is doing. If he feels they’re SEC caliber players then he’s ahead of the game like he was with Jordan Young

Butch Jones did it following Dooley. Pruitt is better than Butch Jones. It isn’t too much to ask to finish top 10, which is what I said, 5-10

I think that is exactly what he is doing. I always felt like Botch was reaching on a lot of guys, but I don't feel like that with Pruitt, he will try to get the higher rated kids he wants and we have a realistic shot at, and he will find and take guys that he wants that are under the radar. He knows he can coach them.

We know that he can also, which is why this is nothing to worry about at this point. But, if we want to win national championships, we will have to recruit at the highest of levels going forward to be able to beat Alabama and GA and that's just to get into the SEC championship game, let alone win a national championship.

What are you offering as incentive other than early playing time to a kid that was born in 2002 to come to Tennessee if he's a 4* or 5* player? I have an 18 year old that loves UT football because I do and it's my alma mater. He'll also tell you he can't remember when the Vols were really good in his lifetime.

Horse first, then cart. We have to develop some players and have some sustained success before most kids will be willing to take a look.

It is odd that you brought up Jordan Young, I actually typed the same phrase about being ahead of the game with JY, and erased it because I thought my point was already good enough.

Butch dug us further into a hole than many realize. We’ve become the premier laughing stock of college football thanks to him. Pruitt is doing just fine. Ask rick Barnes about recruiting and coaching three stars. Good coaches find players they like and help them reach their potential. Pruitt knows what traits elite athletes have. I will trust him all day over any recruiting service.

I think he will get there, much like Dumbo at Clemson. It will be a steady progression. Once he reestablishes the programs legitimacy, recruiting will move into the very top echelon.

And that’s fair. That’s what Clemson did. But we have a lot to offer a kid: proven coaching, facilities, resources, post football opportunities etc. we have more to offer a kid than 85% of the other teams in this country, in spite of the past 10 years.

If these 3 stars weren't highly recruited Or have good offers I'd be worried.

Maurer had Ohio st and west Va offers and finished top 5 Elite 11.

Beasley had Auburn and FSU after him

brown picked us over LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss

Aroknophownwhatever his name is had Oregon and texas on him

Middleton was a 4 star in HS and is currently a 3 star because nobody has seen game film in 2 yrs. if he straightens up his cieling is unlimited.

Harrison had offers from ga Tech and Michigan st. Plays out of position and we are going to play him at different spot. Ridiculous testing numbers

Clemons - is a question mark for me as offers aren't there but people that know him swear by him and say he was unstoppable at recent camps vs big time OL. One of those where Pruitt isnprojecting him at OLB while everyone else saw an undersized DE.

Simmons - can understand questioning that one but also see why we took him

Cox - auburn after him and sounds like he prob flips at some point

Not exactly beating out the nobodies for these kids

It is a good point. I’m not saying Pruitt’s doing a bad job. He’s doing fine. But eventually he’ll have to do even better if we’re going to win championships. Only point I’m making. He does have an uphill battle right now with recent history, but we’re not asking too much for a top 10 class. I’m sure he would agree

This isn’t basketball. Also, we aren’t worse off than we were when Butch took over. That’s fake news

I agree. I think this is what he’ll have to do. Hopefully he’ll get some top dudes like Crouch, Wright and Bogle this year tho to speed up that process

But there are a couple of extra considerations...

1 - Did he have the ultimate say on who to extend offers at Georgia, Bama or FSU? Answer is probably not.

2 - What 3-stars did he REALLY, REALLY want that were passed on or his evaluation was overriden? This is the $64,000 question and very few people are going to know the true answer...him, Richt, Jimbo and Saban. For all we know, he may have predicted a lot of home runs but ended up watching these kids ball out at other schools.

I might very well be wrong, but for him to be jumping on some of these kids months before signing day indicates to me he likes what he sees and doesn't want to let them get away.

I know, I know...this sounds like blind optimism. But I find it extremely hard to believe that he went after some of the super talents he did last year at the 11th hour yet is now taking whomever he can with months to spare. This would make no sense to me.
