'25 GA DB Zelus Hicks (Texas commit)

We already know this but how insanely loaded is the state of Georgia with talent. Hicks just got ranked as the 47th player in the 2025 cycle in Georgia and he’s a 90 overall 4 star.

Tennessee comparatively, only has 9 players in the state ranked 90+
One of the recruiting sites listed the states with the most amount of top “x amount” of recruits and Georgia was number 1. High school football is real down here.

Someone asked for thoughts on Hicks in another thread..

We knew he was going to reclassify before he committed to Texas. Never really felt like that was going to stick. Maybe I’m wrong but I’d guess he ends up closer to home. He’ll take more visits down the stretch but current feeling is that we’ve done a really nice job here.

Definitely will trust you on this, because you’re right a majority of the time.

But I feel like Texas boards would be saying the same thing like most boards do when they catch wind of something….there’s just no smoke other than you saying it, but I guess that can also be seen as a positive.

Only thing I’ve seen is he will take other visits

I could be wrong here. I think we can get him if we want to. I think that’s true of another school or two close to home. Now do we (or they) also want to play at Texas’ levels for this kid? TBD

Zelus Hicks remains one to watch now that he has reclassified into 2025. Texas wants him as a part of the class, and they are going to fight to keep him. Tennessee made a big impression during last Saturday night's visit, and they are firmly in play here right now.
Hicks knows he is working on a shortened timeline, so he is trying to finalize official visits and give teams an idea of when he could make a final decision. Texas is a given to get an official visit, but he tells us this week that the Vols will for sure get one as well. We will see who else works to end up in play down the stretch as he is widely regarded as a top prospect regardless of class.

Been quiet around this guy lately. The thought was that he’d OV for the UTEP game, but haven’t heard anything about that.

What’s the latest on Hicks @KingVFL @allvolrecruiting ?
I haven’t heard much lately but I think we prefer Merritt which seems very possible.

Hicks is more developmental (supposed to be 2026). Merritt more ready.

Glad the coaches know more than I do because Merrit’s film is meh.

Prefer Hicks, but this is how it usually ends. Random recruit where we randomly end up a top school in their recruitment.

“Ah well we prefer the other guy instead”

Can’t make this **** up. Happens once or twice every year I feel like. We always take the lower ranked kid.

Our view is that Hicks is a ways from contributing. We’ve always had Merritt super high on the board for this class and have been trying for awhile.

We loved Hicks as a 2026. Just really like as a 2025 because he’s a ways away.

Where do we stand with Merritt? Is he supposed to visit?

Listened to 247 podcast last night while playing cfb 25 and texas reporter said they expect him to early enroll with them. He’s taking ov’s to experience that aspect of recruiting since he’s reclassifying.

Merritt is a former hoops player who's been playing QB this season for his team. Can play multiple positions in the defensive backfield and has legit speed.
