'24 GA DL Jeremias Heard (Tennessee commit)

Seems like everyone we are looking at is a 6'-5"+ tackle. Bring me a couple of Spraggin guards.

Tackle is one of the hardest positions to project. You can usually throw stars out the window. As good as our Oline coach has been at development if he likes him I’m good with it.

Maybe if he grows a nice pompadour and burns he can be a hell of an Elvis impersonator…

He's new to football, but he's an elite athlete. You start talking about walking on and he'll walk right on to visits with other schools. If Coach Garner thinks he's worth taking his commit, then you roll the dice. Recruiting is about projection sometimes. Also, none of us know how many DLINE recruits they plan on taking this year. We also haven't seen what kind of Senior season he might have. To many factors to be asking an athlete of this caliber to walk on this early.
No way Garner knows more than our own talent gurus!

and you know that based off what? What video have you watched of him??
There are a few clips from the VQ, and there are a few more clips on twitter. Watching some of his basketball highlights is more than enough though. 6 8' guys with his frame, his lateral quickness and explosiveness is rare. This dude has 36' inch arms. He has no bad weight, he has broad shoulders and looks like he can carry another 30 lbs easily. The traits for a dominant OT are lateral foot speed, long arms, big strong hands, and good knee bend. You can see all of those in his basketball highlights. It is clear as day he is a very coordinated, fluid athlete, and he is very explosive and quick for a man of his size. Guys with this type of size \ frame, with this much reach and quickness, come around once every 5-10 years in football. I feel pretty good about Elarbee coaching this kid up, because his potential is through the roof. Sure he is raw, but he is a blank canvas with few bad habits. He just needs some coaching, he has all the ability to be an elite OT.

Hope he pans out, if the coaches want him, I’m on board, but I just feel like we’re in a place now where we shouldn’t have to take “projects”

90% of OL are "projects." Everyone takes a couple projects each class for the chance that one of them pans out and you have a star if they reach their potential. This staff has liked to get one on the OL each year so far (Brian Grant, Larry Johnson III, etc). The receiver that was Georgia's best player against us was a guy that nobody had heard of that was going to UTC until Georgia offered (Ladd McConkey). Nobody is too good for the occasional project

Taking a project at OL is a lot different than WR, especially OT. I’ll let you decide which position is easier to learn/play.

Hint: it’s not WR

Anyways, not saying you’re wrong about taking them. Just think we are in a spot where we shouldn’t have to take one. GFW even said this in the Okoye thread. We’re in on a ton of OL and DL.

Sure we are in a ton of great OL but how many of those can you tell me you are confident in landing right now

This is called a projection. He has measurables and athletic traits that very few have. Potential is not realized, of course he could not turn into anything near a HOF type player. How many guys became great NFL players that were basketball players that barely played organized football?

Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Jimmy Graham, Martellus Bennett, Julius Peppers just to name a few. Hell i could start naming lots of guys that are NFL players that didn't play much football in HS either like Jean Pierre Paul, Lawrence Okoye, Efe Obada, Clay Matthews, Ike Taylor, Khalil Mack, David Onyemata etc..

As i said before guys with Jeremias's frame and physical traits are very very rare. There are a lot more 6'3-6'5 guys than 6'8-6'9 guys on this planet. Then add the type of athleticism and quickness Heard has.... If he puts the effort in, and with Elarbee's obvious coaching talent, yes i think the sky is the limit for this kid.

And yes this kid is a project, but he is a project at a position group where we have a lot of bodies already, our TE room is barren. You don't go for boom or bust guys in the 24' class when you have no depth and you have guys already committed like Echols, and are in the top 2 for guys like Reddell, Odom, Leblanc, Hipp etc. When you have depth, then a project player is exactly what you want. He will be fine with sitting for awhile in the transfer portal era compared to other guys, and with the right coaching and development, in a couple years he is ready and puts to use his athletic traits to good use and gets closer to fulfilling his immense potential.

Also, the thing for me is the 36' inch arm length. That is just freakish, and a huge advantage. It is a whose who list of NFL stars that all have over 34' inch arm length. There is a very strong correlation showing guys with 34' + arm length achieving a lot success in the NFL for many positions, particularly the OL and DL's.
