Tifton (Ga.) Tift County four-star defensive lineman Tyre West has been committed to Georgia for over a year, but he is not expected to sign with the in-state Bulldogs next week.
Florida State has surged this fall. Auburn and Tennessee have come on strong in recent weeks too.
The No. 140 prospect in the On3 Consensus can’t wait for December 15 because numerous schools have given him a lot to think about.
“I will announce my final decision next Wednesday and I can’t wait to be done with it,” West said. “It has been stressful. It has gotten really tough trying to figure out which school is best for me.
“I have had coaches in here a lot, I talk to different schools every day, and it is going to be tough. I just can’t wait for December 15 to get here so I can sign and have my mind made up.”
Coaches from Auburn, Florida State, and Tennessee were in Tifton Monday. West was expected to take an official to Auburn Wednesday, then finish out the week with an official visit to Tennessee. But the Auburn visit has now been canceled, he told On3.
It is a lot to handle as he prepares to make his final decision.
“All these coaches say a lot of things I like,” West said. “One day I think I want to go here, then two hours later I am thinking I want to go to another school. It is not easy.
“The next day I am thinking that all over again. These coaches are great, they know how to recruit, and I think after these last two official visits, I will be ready to make my mind up.”
West said the defensive scheme, how a school wants to use him, and relationships are most important to him.
Florida State’s connected with Tyre West
West has visited Florida State four times and he has connected with a number of staff members in Tallahassee. From head coach Mike Norvell to defensive tackles coach Odell Haggins to off the field staffers Ryan Bartow and Kenyatta Watson, all have played a role in the Seminoles being a finalist.
“The relationships I have at Florida State are strong,” West said. “I like how the players relate to the coaches, the players and coaches are on the same page, and I feel like I fit in there.”
The message the staff has presented has made an impact too.
“Florida State has told me I am not wanted, but needed, and I feel that way. That is important to me and it stands out.”
Tyre West has been high on Tennessee for years
Tennessee was involved with West very early in his recruitment. The Vols were one of the first schools to offer, West tripped to Knoxville early, and Tennessee was high on his list.
“I liked Tennessee a lot when it was early,” West said. “I almost committed to Tennessee when I was a freshman. This will be my first visit this year, but I have been there before, and I have always liked it there.”
Josh Heupel spent around three hours in Tifton Monday. Rodney Garner is highly involved too. The chance to play early in Knoxville has West’s attention.
“Coach Garner says he is losing 10 defensive linemen out of his room and I would have a chance to help right away. He wants me to make an impact as a freshman.
“I like thinking about playing a lot, maybe starting, early there at Tennessee. I know coach Garner could help me as a coach too.”
Final decision is coming for Tyre West
West will return home from visits to Auburn and Tennessee this weekend and he will be ready to make that final decision.
“I am not sure when I will know for sure, but I think by Tuesday,” West said. “It could go into Wednesday morning before I sign, but I would like to know Tuesday.
“It is exciting to be here and to have the chance to sign with a top school, but it is tough right now, and it is really stressful, so I can’t wait to have that feeling that I know what school I am going to.”
