'18 GA LB JJ Peterson (Tennessee signee)

If I remember correctly he ended up having to live with Propst so it sounds like he didn't have a great home situation. I may be thinking of someone else but I think that was him.

Not sure if he lives full-time with the Propsts, but Propst does act as his guardian. Peterson has custody of a young daughter who's only about a year old and he has to support her, so his life isn't easy.

Good excuse for the bad grades but that should also motivate him even more to get his grades up

She had a hip replacement this morning. She's doing as well as she could be. Waiting for the spinal block to subside so they can get her up and about. Thanks for asking.

Similar issues in my hip as your wife. Had me shuffling down the hall and back 30 min after waking up. Support/encourage her to go just a bit further than PT folks demand at each session. The harder she works the quicker the pain goes, too. Best wishes for a rapid recovery.

By all accounts his grades have been a lot better the past couple semesters. Just needs a little more improvement to get there.

Proud that he is standing up with his daughter. Even had to get custody. Speaks well of the young man. I have seen even in middle school kids with parents who don’t care and how hard it is for them with no home support. Hope he makes it just because for some it is a harder road than for others. Not just so it helps UT football but gives him a chance for some good things in his life for him and his daughter.

Yup. That's why I try not to ever judge these kids or question them on a personal level, because I have no idea what their situation is.

I agree. I'm rooting hard for this kid. By all accounts, he wants to be at UT and is working toward that. He's close to Pruitt and being at UT will help him make a better life for himself and his child. There are so many resources to help him once he's here... but there's only so much we can do until he can make it in. Really hope it happens.

Maybe it's being a bit classless but if you really can't find a way to get your **** together with all the help provided in school, you really don't deserve to be at Tennessee. What a waste.

I understand what you’re saying but not all kids have the right support system at home to make them realize this.

This is why we shouldn’t rush to cast judgement on these kids. You never know what they are going through at home.

I think this illustrates how difficult it can be to dig out of an academic hole. It's hard to erase 3 1/2 years of poor academic achievement in one semester.

Pretty sure somewhere in this thread it was reported his ACT scores were qualifying and not the issue.

I’ve asked before (sorry if it’s already been answered), but could this be a situation where he could do a semester at a prep school and grey shirt? Or if he doesn’t make it in is he JUCO bound for sure?

It's definitely a sliding scale. It looks like per NCAA a minimum of 2.3 GPA for full entrance. 2.0-2.3 requires a redshirt year. The ACt requirements climb as the GPA goes down. If you have a GPA of 3.5 you can have a combined score as low as a 39. If your GPA is 2.3 then you must have have a minimum combined ACT of 75.

NCAA Sliding Scale | GPA and SAT/ACT Requirements

The SEC may have some more stringent requirements too.

I just hope we don't lose him for good. Seems to always be the case in Juco situations.

Wow, his podcast is excellent. Made me feel a lot better about the season. Like, I think he seriously believes we’re gonna win 8 games.

I'm a huge fan of Doug. Been listening to his shows for several years now. Sometimes I think he's a little overly optimistic, which is his prerogative, but he's about as good as it gets in the middle Tennessee area. I think he thinks will win 7 or 8, but I disagree.

I mean... a 75 combined score is an 18.75 on the ACT... pretty sure I scored a 21 on the ACT after my sophomore year to get in middle college at Chattanooga State... and that was after Christmas treeing the Science section for a 16 so I could go home cause it was the last test... I was a punk in high school and was bored with it...

I get some people don't test well and blah blah but you can't get in community college with less than a 18... and there were full-retards walking around community college daily lol...

So I don't doubt he got the test to the highest standard he needed to play with the lowest GPA... but I'm actually surprised that the minimum for the sliding scale is that high above a C average

I'd like to meet the kid that had a 3.525 GPA that couldn't make a 9.5 on the ACT

It's an issue of timing. If he retakes the ACT this weekend, there's no guarantee the results will be available in time to clear for the fall session. The only option left is to raise the core GPA with online courses. If he doesn't qualify by fall, he can retake the ACT and multiple core classes to land where he needs to be on the scale and enroll whenever he qualifies. But that won't help us-- or him-- this fall.

Dang, why are you using the claws?

I’m wondering who is actually giving him advice tho, no reason why he shouldn’t have took the ACT again in June just in case, they take the highest score and it may have eased his GPA requirement.
