Rusty beginning to hedge...

"Georgia has recruited him very hard over the last year or so. Tennessee, Florida, LSU and Oklahoma are others that have as well. I still think Georgia as of today, but others are in this one."

you know it killed him just to admit that. Hes truly one of the worst.

In other words...

We boys we tried like hell but we’ve been passed in line

My guess is and it’s homer included

Tennessee
Oklahoma
Georgia

When we win our next national championship and ESPN does a 20 for 20 about it, they better call it “Going Viral” and focus on our massive social media reach and it’s role in recruiting during a pandemic.
So has anyone had a case study or done the research to determine what makes us Vols so rabid and robust?

I mean there are other tradition rich programs that have been around a long time as well. I'm just seriously asking what magic formula created us that's so different?

I've often wondered if it has a lot to do with being the main major instate school. Just curious as to opinions of others.

I think its this.

We have a great tradition that's gone back 100 plus years. We are a blue blood.

We don't share the state with anybody substantial. Vandy and Memphis are irrelevant.

Bama, FLA, UGA and everyone, but Arkansas and LSU have to share their state with some other big program.

Its really LSU and Tennessee with the largest fan vases. Ours being larger probably because they're are more people in Tennessee. We also have such a big alumni base. I'm from Lynchburg Virginia and there are Tennessee fans/alumni everywhere here.

Just for the record I have betrayed my home state teams because my grandpa played for the Vols in the mid 60's.

And boy do I tire of being disrespected by people in ACC country. Luckily I'm moving to Tenn soon.

I think it's a combination of several things. Me being 60 , I think I can at least take a stab. When I was young, dad always had the radio tuned in on Saturdays to the Vols. So I quickly became a fan. That led me to start reading books, magazines, etc on Gen Neyland, Bob Johnson, Majors and others. My hatred of Andy on west end started from reading about Neyland's hatred and just grew from there. Then you add in the Vol Network with John and Bill, the continuous expansion of the stadium in the 70's and 80's set the foundation to where it is today. The Vol Army just kept growing and since I could never serve in the real armed forces due to health reasons, I could damn sure enlist for life and Volunteer for this army!

Good stuff... but maybe we're just better. 😎

Big part is that the Tennessee Volunteers as a nickname/mascot are highly unique. Unique color scheme, unique stadium (size and location), nickname is actually relevant to the state. The old Daniel Boone coonskin cap logo was quintessential TN. Just so easy to identify with the team as a Tennessean.

Also UT fandom goes back generations. In the South it was us and Bama for decades. So people grew up third or even fourth generation Vols fans.

My somewhat educated guess is that a leading factor, but not only, is the lack of a competing professional sport of any kind in the state for the longest time.

If USC Trojans sucked you still had the Raiders, Dodgers, Lakers, 49ers; up North you had Boston Bruins or Red Sox, Yankees, Mets or Dodgers. Michigan had the RedWings, Tigers and Lions, etc. Outside of our Vols what did we have to follow; when did they come around relative the Vols and their success?

Volunteer goes back to the states call for arms during the war. Many “volunteered”

Smokey goes back to an half time show. I forget what game it was. 10 blue ticks were showcased at the 50 and Smokey was the only one to bark when his name was called.

The color comes from the daisy that grew on the hill outside the stadium. A bright and beautiful color when the sunlight shined.

Hadn't heard the color story before. That's cool.

To me it's all about the history of the state. Ancestors were here when it was a territory and helped create the state. They were part of why we got the nickname Tennessee Volunteers.

Grandfathers started the tradition of going to the games. Carried on by fathers and then by their sons. It’s been said when a baby is born in Tennessee you circle Tennessee on the certificate.
