3. Tennessee has regained the momentum with Len'Neth Whitehead.
Whitehead, a top-100 prospect in 247Sports' rankings, has been one of Tennessee's top targets for months. The Vols extended an offer to the four-star linebacker more than a year ago, and he has visited them twice this year, including his official visit to Knoxville the weekend of Aug. 31 for their season-opening loss to Georgia State.
Over the past couple of months, though, South Carolina appeared to have emerged as the team to beat for Whitehead, a standout at Athens (Ga.) Academy who could play running back or linebacker in college. He once planned to take an official visit to Wisconsin earlier this month, too, while Tennessee seemed to have lost some ground with him but quietly remained in the picture.
Things have changed a bit recently, though, at least in part because of South Carolina's recent struggles. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Whitehead also remains very interested in potentially playing running back in college, and Tennessee has continued to tell him that it's open to giving him a chance to play there.
Whitehead once planned to announce a decision on Nov. 15. He recently decided to push back his announcement, though, and he's expected to visit the Vols again before making his choice. That bodes well for Tennessee in a hard-fought recruitment that once appeared to be trending away from the Vols. It might not be fair to suggest Tennessee now is the clear favorite to land Whitehead, but the momentum clearly has started to shift back toward the Vols.
