Game Thread: (#11/10) Lady Vols 76 - Tennessee Tech 48

If there is anything to work on a lot before the next game it would be passing the ball. to many telegraphed passes last night along with some that were just to difficult to even try. Love the game that Dye played finally making her shot at the elbow and in the paint. Very strong game by her. Tess best game as a Lady Vol and Key had a consistent game.

Double double in back to back games for Tamari Key is really nice to see especially when she isn’t even playing a ton of minutes

And she’s making it look ordinary. During the game you aren’t thinking “oh man, she’s gonna have another double double.” But then you check the stats, and there it is. She’s getting really comfortable in there.

Tamari has had a good string of games, but it was even better to see Karoline be productive in limited minutes. I hope she gets herself positioned in the regular rotation come SEC play.

Wasn't able to catch the game, but I'm sure the happiest person on the team right now must be Tess Darby. She must have been relieved to see the long ball drop to the bottom of the net consistently all game long.

We gotta another game to play before I'd move them up. Oregon did lose...
Oregon is already well outside of the top 10 right now. If Michigan beats Indiana, then they will likely leapfrog over the LVs, so they will stay put. If anything, Iowa should be moving down due to the program being shut down ATM.

They need to take care of business at hand and not like VT be a trap game for them as they look ahead to Stanford.

My favorite play by Key was the 2 blocks in a row and then she literally pursued the girl with the ball going after another block.

Agreed. Virginia Tech is for sure setup to be a trap game. I do feel like having several days to prepare and an off day helps. Plus a full week after to prepare for Stanford so they shouldn’t need to worry too much about Stanford prior to the VT game.

Interestingly the two teams have some similarities so playing VT will be a good primer for defending Stanford. Lots of 3s and good inside out play with Kitely.

I think Indiana will beat Michigan. They’re a tough team. They got them by 5 last season. Hillmon won the battle in the paint over Holmes so she’ll have something to prove. Should be a fun matchup to watch!

We'll have to agree to disagree, plus this is an extremely old and tired subject we argue about every season and I promised myself I wouldn't do it this season. So just this once . . .

My basic disagreement is over the "outsized influence" of this forum. At peak, during the season, we are a couple of dozen active posters and probably several times that of lurkers, drivebys, etc. We ARE actually one of the larger more active WBB forums but even at that we're tenny, tiny as a percentage of people who care or watch WBB. Plus we are a very old school format; I'm sure twitter, instagram, etc are more active.

Moreover, I don't see watching what we say as a solution; rather, those actually connected to the program should watch what they consume. As I said in the original post, seeking out this forum, attaining a login, and then monitoring for insults is no different from running up on a live conversation, eavesdropping on it, and then being hurt by what you heard. Don't spend your time that way unless you truly want to hear what's being said. Then don't complain.

In reality, these parents and players have been in elite athletic zones a long, long time. They long ago figured out what's important criticism (the coaches) and what doesn't amount to a hill of beans (us).

I agree with you that they perhaps "shouldn't" visit here but they will and we know they will. That's just reality. The overlap between this forum and active fanbases on Twitter, Instagram, FB, etc are huge. It's not about how many posters use this forum, it's about the fact that parents, players, coaches, and haters lurk on this forum. And in niche communities like the WBB community, a handful of active online forums, regardless of how outdated the format, become the means of communication for these fanbases. Meaning, they have an outsized influence.

And I'm not suggesting we watch what we say, but what we do say has an aggregate influence on how the fanbase is viewed. And that can be a great thing (especially when things are going well)! But it can also turn people away.

How do you normally watch your games on SEC+ on the cable channel or streaming? If you have ESPN+ or Sling it should be easy to watch. They broadcast all the ACC network games as well

I go to watchespn.com to watch Lady Vols games or the men's game when they're not on the SEC TV Network.
I have the SEC TV Network on my "cable TV lineup". I don't have & I'm NOT subscribed to watch the ACC Network ... it isn't available in my TV area .... & why would I. I'm not a fan of any ACC team sports. Just like when any TN Vols team that plays on the ESPNU channel I don't get that either bc it's not on my cable TV lineup package that's already being paid for. It's all good. I'm able to survive w/the game highlights that's later linked.

My thoughts exactly. This has "trap game" written all over it, especially so following the always-stressful finals week.

you right i saw on facebook lady vols one of mothers reads thes boards we all need watch what say me to!
And you know, I’m not trying to take anyone’s freedom of speech away. I’m hoping adults know how awful it is to constantly spew negativity. It’s toxic. Some players have thick skin. Others don’t. So, you can say what you want, but it doesn’t mean you should say it.

You can use excuses. But as I said in an earlier post, petiole can say what they want, but it doesn’t mean they should. Some of you don’t want to hear it, but there are players of all ages who get dumped on by adults, and they stop playing. It’s devastating. There’s a difference between saying, “We need to work on turning the ball over less” and “She’s awful. Most of the turnovers are hers and she needs to sit on the bench.” When did that second statement ever help or motivate a player to improve? Probably never.

When did a D1 athlete ever need a few dozen keyboard coaches on an outdated forum to motivate them to improve? Or allow that same handful of uninformed but enthusiastic fans to make them stop playing? Probably never.

If that is the case at this stage of the game for them, the player and parents probably need to examine whether they're cut out for big time play.

Also I would remind there is an LV forum where everything is sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. If parents or players just have to peruse fan forums, looking for what, validation? motivation? I would suggest that one.

Some are always going to believe the influence here is "outsized", and I'm always going to believe its nonexistent. And now, I really am out on this tried and trusty debate.

I’m excited to see how Tamari plays against Kitley at VT
Kitley is one of the few experienced high profile, talented post players that could look Tamari in the eye. I wonder how they fared against each other as HS players? This will be a good matchup, especially with Cameron Brink coming up a few games afterwards.

i do know if it was volnation or the summit or anthor site. but one players saw something they did not like and said they going to monitor what was being said. it was a freind of the mothers player that post it on facebook. so do not know does not matter. and she name the site. which player mother who did not like post she did not say or if was volnation or the summit.

They are listed the same height but when I watch both teams play Tamari just looks bigger. I’ll be interested to see them side by side. Might just be the aggressive way Tamari has been playing this season but she looks so much bigger than everyone else. Elizabeth doesn’t look that much bigger than the defenders she faced in the two games of theirs I’ve watched.

About the turnover issue, I've been thinking a lot about it and have decided I'd rather bet on the fact that it'll gradually get better as the season goes on than I would for any drastic changes be attempted to alter anyone's game right now. I just keep remembering how tentative the players under the former staff got when a lot more was made of the problem than is happening now.

Yes, I wish, as Kellie called them, the "just-hand-it-to-the-other-team" turnovers would stop, but for right now it might be more important overall to avoid having anyone suddenly begin to overthink everything. I watched enough disastrous "overthinking" for a lifetime a few years ago.

I'm going to relax and let what I believe will happen, happen -- without anyone having to make sudden drastic changes that could hurt more than help. I don't know why, but I believe the issue will resolve itself before the season is over.

Tamari looks bulkier than Elizabeth, whether they're the same height or not. Seems that players can score on Kitley easier than Key because they can move her. Kitley will make Key work on defense, so I'm curious if the plan will be to Key go right at her on offense and make Kitley work on defense.

Closer to 2 weeks between VT and Stanford, Georgia State is between. We should be fully focused on VT. We‘re improving each game.

GO LADY VOLS!!!

Steve Hamer is a fantastic guy to have calling our games. A former Vol, so he's got some love for the place, but he's a former player and he calls it like he sees it on the court. Nobody's perfect, but he's a Vol and I'll take it over a lot of the other things ESPN sometimes serves up for these SECN+ shows. If I were picking out a list of analysts who really give insight and explain what's happening during possessions, I feel like that list would be pretty short anyway (as to whether that's by ESPN's direction, or by their skill, I don't know enough to say).

I love his approach. He’s fair if you ask me and calls games like a coach because he’s always trying to get more out of our players and get them to play to their potential, particularly Key. I think some people don’t like him because they like to live in a fantasy world where the team’s shortcomings are never called out.

I have seen the two players play Key is taller with more vertical and better on the defensive end, But Kitley is much more polished on the offensive end of the floor.
