Game Thread: (13/10) Lady Vols 76 - Missouri 62

If you designed a way Tennessee has to play to win a basketball game last night was what we need to do it. This has been the formula all season strong defense and rebounding and hope we can create enough shots from this to score the points we need to win. No doubt at this point were not a very good offensive team and not going to be one. We would be better if Rae could again find the game she played as a junior, but the injury has definitely set her back. Whatever we do for the rest of this season will be determined by how we can hold teams at the 60 point mark and find a way to score a few more than that on offense. This is what we do this season whether we like it or not it is our identity with this team.

Yet they are 20 & 4. Something seems to be working at a high level cause I know about 340 other D1 schools who would love to have that win/loss record:)

Things a fan might talk about 1) another great double double game from Jordan Horston; 2) Tess Darby nailing 4 threes plus a solid all round game; 3) after a sloppy first quarter, the LVs getting their TOs under control; 4) handling the press more effectively. 5) Alexis Dye coming back with a monster 3rd quarter after a poor 1st half. 6) Righting the SEC ship with a dominating win over a team that can be really dangerous (ask SC). 7) TK getting back to controlling the defensive block.

What fans don't do; Make dumbass snarky comments about a WIN .
100%

It’s funny to follow this thread and not watch the game. So much drama and criticism.

I find it kinda sad with all the knee jerk reactions to plays and malcontents dissing anything that they don’t like. That’s why I seldom go back to read them. But occasionally, there are some totally outrageously funny gripes…….

Also NCAA tourney projected teams too 😁

I agree with you 100% they are projected to make the field and they had that big win over SC but are reeling right now. They have lost 2 in a row and 6 of there last 9 ? Left Ark, GA, Miss State, KY, FLA, And the way they playing right now is guarantee they will win any of those games. By the way did not get a chance to watch this game last night was out of town. Good win from what i see from what i see in this thread.

Very perceptive analysis, Volfan2012. You hit the nail on the head.

Jordan Horston had a fantastic game. Another double double. Incredible! However, the one area that might get over looked is her fantastic passing. Last night she hit long passes to Key and Dye repeatedly for easy scores. At 6 feet 2, her ball handling skills have improved dramatically. At that height, her ability to dribble ( keeping smaller harassing guards away) and look for team mates is impressive.

One wrinkle I saw last night that I really liked is that we had a player hang back and set a screen for Walker in the backcourt. Makes it easier for her to bring the ball up and makes the defender think twice about overplaying. They smack into that screen a couple times and they have to take a step or two off so they can watch for it.

We need to continue this against pressure teams. Both Horston and Dye leveled one of the MIZZOU guards on a good screen. Solid, legal and very helpful to our ball handlers. We need more of that.

Wynn had the hardest hit, but I can't remember if it was a screen. I thought it was, but it was also under the basket and that is an unlikely place for one. Anyone else remember that play?

Also saw Tamari throw her weight around a little and knock a girl down instead of getting knocked down.

As far as MO “beating” SC, maybe SC should get the credit for the lost. The only way MO could win that game is for SC to play poorly. Having said that, Frank did have a very good game for MO.

Elite teams minimize their “off” games. Let’s hope UT got their “off” games done with for the season.

We really only have one bad loss on the season. The Auburn game was absolutely not a good look and did nothing for us. The losses to Stanford, UCONN and Florida you can live with at this point. Florida is about to be a top 15 team and will be in the NCAA tournament unless they totally implode down the stretch.

MIZZOU is not a bad team I thought they would be awful this season. They shot the ball really well against South Carolina. I watched that game and it played perfectly for MIZZOU. They started hot from 3 and got the SC players chasing them all over. Started drawing their bigs out because Frank was hitting bombs and then they got a bunch of wide open layups. Was a messy game for South Carolina and their defense was way spread out.

I also agree Mizzou is not a bad team like you said. I think teams know how to play them now and it`s starting to show. Defend the 3 force them to put the ball on the floor and pound way at the glass. Ole Miss did the same thing we did last night from i have seen from the highlights. They might not win there last 5 games. If you think about in there last 5 games who can they defend ?.

Also helped that refs called Frank for a foul on her second “take a charge “ attempt and they had to stop that nonsense they sometimes get by with.

Agree! I would also add 8 steals and some great transition baskets. At least it helped counter some of our oopsies. Miles was getting after it!

False. When you aren't even competitive in losing by 20+ points to Florida (unranked at the time) and UConn, those are bad losses...

So for the more knowledgeable fans. TOs were bad in Q1 but then really improved Q2/3. Any thoughts on what changed? I feel like that has happened a couple of games recently.

One additional item that I think is significant. It involves timeouts and our response after the timeout.

In the second quarter there was a TV timeout with 4:54 left in the quarter. Tennessee led 23 to 21 at the time, and then went on a 9 to 1 run going up 32 to 22. During the last 57 seconds of the quarter, we had two defensive breakdowns and gave up a wide open three and a layup. Half time score 32 to 27.

After the quarter break, Tennessee went on a 9 to 2 run. Missouri called time out at 7:18 left in the 3rd quarter.

After the Missouri timeout, over the next 4:25, Tennessee went on a 9 to 0 run and led 50 to 29. Tennessee did give up 4 more more points in the quarter but basically the game was decided.

Tennessee's coaching staff did a phenomenal job in those timeouts of keeping our ladies focused and playing incredible defense. In the fourth quarter, substitution patterns changed and some starters were rested. We all saw in the fourth quarter why Missouri beat SC. Missouri is a good team and can score quickly.

Elite defense wins games. If we can play that type of defense, we can beat anyone in the country
