Game Thread: (4/5) Lady Vols 61 - Auburn 71

Sometimes we need not to be so enamored by the Pat Summitt myth, where endless stories are told of how she completely changed the course of a game with "the stare." The LVs had more than their share of disappointing losses, including the inexplicable result where the legendary "meeks" team lost to an on paper overmatched Duke squad in the elite 8. In a lot of games, the outcome turned less because of CPS's stare than because the LVs had a Candace Parker, a Holdsclaw, or a Catching, or a Lawson would could take over a game.

(Imagine the conversation around this Auburn game, if a 100% Rae had closed the game with 10 point flurry leading the team to victory...)

CPS was kind of in the Bobby Knight mold (a much more in-control version of course) and I think that stern disciplinarian approach just does not work as well in today's world. I have no doubt that kellie demands accountability but redface screaming at a player may make fans feel better but it probably does not do jack squat for most players. In her presser, Maria ask if Kellie if this game could be a teaching moment to make the team appreciate the value of not turning the ball over. And Kellie's response, was they know that already, we talk about it, we work on it, it was our execution and spacing that was our problem tonight."

I think that is exactly right. Does anyone really believe that Burrell needs a coach to scream at her to realize that she hurt the term when she dribbled the ball off her foot in a crucial moment (and to feel awful about that mistake). Is screaming at Emily going to improve her reaction time? and so on.
I wish we had the talent level now that we had then. I wish other teams had the talent level that they had then. In most games Tennessee had a huge talent advantage that is no longer true. We have already beaten teams this year with talent equal or better than we have. Auburn has less talent and we lost you never know in this era of basketball. Back then the more talented teams could get by in most games just on talent alone.

While everyone wants the most talented players, I've come to realize that I enjoy it more when every opponent is a challenge. Having two or three loaded superteams isn't great for the fans; much better to have 10 or 12 top teams with similar talent levels followed by another 12 or 18 talented teams who are next tier yet capable of pulling off major upsets on any given night under the right conditions.

we can think the "Evil Genius II" for this trend
Geeno
The difference is he realized that even though they were playing through adversity, they still needed him to rescue them at the right moment.

Letting a team successfully play through adversity builds a team,,,but making them play through adversity to the point that they feel helpless is not going to grow confidence. It only make s the player's uncertain about if they will be rescued next time.

Well, I don't know about all that. Seems to me that calling a to in the first quarter of a road game is like pushing a panic button. So I'm guessing there are two valid sides of the question here. Pick your poison.

DePaul did pound Vanderbilt and won at Kentucky when they were ranked in the top 15 FWIW.

I know you can argue Auburn had some nice moments this season, but it's hard to get past the fact that they had a losing record and they were the only winless team in the conference this deep into the season. It's just a really bad look for Kellie, for the program, and for potential recruits...

Absolutely. Studies show conclusively that recruits base their decisions on location, championship possibilities, available playing time, culture, coaches, a feeling of family or being at home, and whether or not the program has lost an away game to Auburn.

Looking at cumulative game stats of the LV's this season, we have been averaging over 15 assists pg in SEC play, until Ga. and Aub, which were 8 and 7, resp. Our shooting %s in this game are similar to others, offensive rebounds were down a little in this game, but not a lot. Turnovers were on the higher side of the SEC games, but not significantly so. The number of shots taken was low, but not significantly so in comparison. The sudden drop in assists speaks to what we all saw - a lot of dribbling and not enough passing. The other thing that stands out confirms what we saw - the turnover and steals differentials were heavily skewed in Auburn's favor.

I pick attempting to stop a run or momentum over just letting their lead build without a speedbump

Yep...without even doing research...and without even having to dig into Holly's years.

Under Pat, there was Ball State 1st round, there was the championship beatdown against CONN, there was a game in which we blew a 21-pt lead (to LSU?) and lost by 14 or more, etc. This team has overachieved; I remember games we list when we had been #1 all season. Jolly's last game that prevented the opportunity for a 4th straight was devastating. This game looks bad due to the rankings, but it's just a regular season game, and the real fans who have watched this team are well aware of their limitations. It's not a shock to some of us despite being really disappointing.

Although I trird not to look ahead, I knew Arkansas and Florida were coming up before CONN. I anticipated one or both of those games being a struggle but not Auburn. I hoped we'd be 21-1 when we went to CONN, but this should present the team with urgency to improve their well-known weaknesses.

How do you improve the coach?

I don’t know about anyone else on here that is a LV fan, but if you had told me in October that we would be 18-2 on January 28th, I would have had you committed. I think they will be allright. Might lose 2 or 3 more before the SECT. I expect to get hosed at UCONN and get toasted at SC. Could lose a home game to Ark, and away to Florida in light of what they did to LSU. Shouldn’t but could.
I agree

You realize Striplin is a freshman and Saunders is a junior? Our inability to backup Key lies with coaching failure and player failure to develop Emily.
I don’t know how they could develop Emily. She just appears to be out of her league. She doesn’t have SEC level talent. They did recruit Keyen out of the portal to back up Tamari, who would have guessed she would have torn her ACL two years in a row.

Miles and Darby, who don't play much at all, and a true freshman are going to lead us to a national title, along with Key and Horston? Wishful thinking....
Generally, basic basketball coaching 101 does call for a time out by the coach when your team is getting "severely out played" by an opponent, especially if that opponent was an 18 point underdog...

This club was stressed out by the loss of Green, not that she would have calmed all the waters, but damn fans, our girls needed some kind of emotional relief that Coach Kellie could have provided...But, for some reason only known to her, she chose not to take a time out, but instead just watched it happen like we did.

A strategically called time out can be a valuable coaching tool.
I hate that none of the journalists asked her why she didn’t take a time out.

We certainly need to upgrade the talent of our team. Not that it is not a talented team, but after you get by SC which has more talent than anyone in the nation and certainly the SEC. you get in a group of teams that are about equally talented. Ole Miss, Tennessee, Georgia, and LSU are very close to equal in talent. Missouri probably could be added in that group as well as they do have three former five star player on the roster. I'd like to see Tennessee show some separation in talent from the other teams in the SEC the only team doing that now is SC.

How do you improve the coach?

Same way you upgrade just about anything in life...

The local media has been coddling the coach here for years, starting with the #1 sycophant. If you're waiting for them to ask the tough questions, you're going to be waiting a while...

this is not unique to TN...watch the pressers of other College BB pressers or even professional sports and it is pretty much the same,,,non-instigating questions
