Game Thread: (7/7) Lady Vols 56 - (10/9) Connecticut 75

That's a bit of a stretch. I think the more common theme is that Tennessee is playing like 💩 right now.

They need to get it together. Missouri's eyes must be getting really wide right now.

They won't win another game the rest of the season playing like this. It is all on them. I said before I don't think Kellie can do anything about it because their problems are clearly mental. All of those airballs were because they were tight and scared. That is on them. They have to want to win more than they fear screwing up and play in the moment.

The rest of the season will be what the players make of it. They seem to be content to let things collapse now that they are out of contention for anything. Only they can change that. There is not some button the coaches can push that will make them not lay down when they get challenged. They have to decide that amongst themselves. They did good fighting back earlier in the year, but that was exhausting for them and they are probably mentally fatigued now. Somehow, they will have to get a second wind or a season that was once so full of promise will end as an embarrassment.

They should really be unranked now given how they are playing. They are just flat out awful and I would not bet on them against any team in the SEC.

The refs just ripped us off! Lol…
I’m looking for anything after this debacle

It did surprise me that UCONN played so aggressively on D with a supposed short bench. I think Geno rolled with it and they were letting a lot bumping slapping go and a lot of moving screens. Just good coaching going with what refs give you until they don’t.

I didn't realize the game was scheduled UConn vs. Horston. She gave good effort but her team abandoned her. When is the last game of a supposed good team in which 3 starters shoot 0 for 16 (Dye, Walker,, and Darby). Yes, we had one player who had a great height advantage and actually shoots over 50%, and she took just 3 shots (made 2) and got a total of 3 rebounds. Well perhaps we can hope for Burrell, who I know is struggling due to injury recovery. Even though some of her stats don't look as bad as the starters, the fact is that we got outscored by 20 points in the 22 minutes she played and outscored UConn by 1 point in the 18 minutes she was on the bench. Virtually no assists from point guards. Our rebounding duo of Dye and Key got a grand combined total of 4 rebounds. Completely unprepared and emotionally unfocused for this game after the same issues in the previous game. Not a good look for KJH, She still has time to correct the ship, but this was truly discouraging.

Those last three she hit...she was so wide open she had time to finish braiding her hair before she let them fly. Tenn knew she was the gunner. No idea why someone wasn't on her hip the whole time.

They should also have gone right at her when she had 2 fouls, esp Burrell or Horston. She's not a good defender.
Did you notice Bueckers on the sideline with a "what do you expect expression, leaving her wde open"

I am starting to think the current issues are more confidence than chemistry related. It feels like the Green injury hit them hard and every player is trying to step up individually rather than as a team…which leads to more turnovers and bad shots…only compounding the confidence issues. The players have to regain that early season confidence but the coaching staff has to help get them there.

Kellie recently said in a presser she wanted to simplify things on offense since they were so in their heads and committing bad turnovers. But I actually wonder if this simplification is what’s leading to so much 1-1 ball. We gotta start running something on offense.

On defense, Key has not been nearly as aggressive since the Green injury, maybe in her head about not fouling, but it’s disrupted what was one of the nation’s best defenses.

I dont know if someone mentioned it but Horston,,..... 7 turnovers..... what good is 26 points if you compromise them with that many turnovers .... which turned into how many points for Connecticut

I liked the lineup with Horston at the 4 and Key/Puckett at the 5 that was played for a moment

Eh, there have been plenty of games that Horston’s turnovers cost us but not really today. She’s asked to do SO much for us to create and handle the ball that it’s kind of inevitable she’ll end up with the most turnovers.

Puckett can't play the 5 against any size. Sara will have to back her out of necessity unfortunately, because the next two up are not ready.

Friend I have considered your proposition but confess I have decided I would rather have the 26 points.

Dye 0 for 5 and no assists, Darby 0 for 4(and all 4 missed badly) with 0 assists, Walker 0 for 7 and 1 assist. 3 starters with a combined 1 point. Just ridiculous.
You can't beat good teams when 3 starters have no effect offensively and your bench since the Green Injury does not have enough to overcome. Right now to much inconsistent play from PG position and in that we do not effect game for the good offensively rather scoring or assisting for others. In CHRIST Alone

When we finish blaming the refs—who called UC for far more fouls than their average—
and ESPN, and the hapless NCAA, maybe we can notice that we didn't shoot worth a damn, our rebounding was not so hot, and Fudd was 7/9 from three point land.

AMEN. We have to have the whiniest fans....ESPN hates us...the NCAA hates us...the Refs hate us....ge got out played and out coached today. Plain and simple. I am a HUGE fan of CKH personally but if she is not able to grow a bit as a coach she will never lead the LV back to a final four. We are playing the same terrible stagnant offense that has been around since the last few years of Coach Summit's tenure. We need to hire a very bright offensive coach who can bring some fresh air into the program.

Key? Looking like she's just QUIT.

I think preaching about all of the success we have had in the past maybe hurts more than it helps. None of that success belongs to these girls.

But, because of that heritage, when they go out to play they feel like the other team is trying to take something away from them and it scares them. It is an entitlement attitude. When the better attitude is to realize that they have nothing, and will have nothing if they don't win it on the court.

You have to have the attitude you are going to take what belongs to the other team, and then you are playing aggressively instead of scared and defensively. You can't win anything in basketball playing tight. And players either have the mentality where they rise to the occasion or they don't. There was no play Kellie was going to draw up that would keep them from shooting airballs until the pressure was off and the game out of reach.
