Game Thread: (7/7) Lady Vols 56 - (10/9) Connecticut 75

This was hard to watch, however, we should not be surprised. We got beat by better talent. Simply put, Tennessee does not have the same talent as UCONN. We made too many turnovers, didn’t command the boards and UCONN had the three ball working. Add to all that, our offense is subpar. That being said I refuse to give up on KJH and the Lady Vols. We have to lick our wounds and try to rebound. The last conference games and conference tournament will say a lot about this team’s ability to right the ship. If I were KJH, I would be working the portal really hard for next year.

All us couch coaches have thoughts.
This comes to mind
- full on coaching up Striplin with minutes; if it's between her and ES (great kid, but just not going to happen), stop wasting time
- if you think that's hard to do, it's harder to do the next... get Key back in the game. Teams know the recipe to double/triple team and muscle her around. Draw some plays that when that happens she slides away to the side to try and draw away defenders for Horston, Burrell or Dye to drive AND draw the foul. Our short guards can't draw the foul, don't waste a possession. A kickoff to Darby 3 an option
- Rae is just going to need time to get back and accept the fact that wild is not good
- let Horston be Horston
- Let Dye be Dye, rebound & occasional good points game
- we have no dependable point guards, accept it and try to control unforced TO's

I never saw the wheels coming off so completely, even after the inexplicable loss to Auburn.

I guess we’ll see what the Coach does for the remainder of the season, but it feels like they’re in free fall. If she can’t stop the downward spiral … yikes. We’re not going to win a championship, but let’s at least act like a top 25 team.

If she can't stop the free fall Danny White will..

agree that have represented UT well all year.... but disagree that it is just one bad game.... Florida and Aubirn are not good teams.... and Conn missing key pieces to its team a bad showing today
A have sadly agree...Earlier we looked like world beaters, LVs of old, but lately???????? In 2wks span, losing to Auburn, Florida [BLOWOUT], and a Uconn [pieces] team...I don't know what has happened ro the team SO QUICKLY...I understand loses, but who you lose to and rhe way you lose, is concerning...😳

Truth. It's been true all along. People don't like admitting it for some reason, but the very top of the recruiting mountain is where you're likely to find the game changers. No, it's not a given, no it's not automatic, but the odds go up significantly. The talent pool in this game is smaller. You look at teams who win national titles, they usually have 1-2 top 10 recruits, or more, playing in their lineup. And the #1 ranked recruit almost always wins a title before they're gone. That's not a coincidence. I just hope Tennessee can find a way to crack that door open, because they need it. Desperately.
👍

The Top 5 classes who came in during the last few years of the previous staff's tenure who then proceeded to set all kinds of abysmal records and only qualified for the Tournament as a charity case.

Or did you forget that you were talking about recruiting?

Nah. I didn’t forget I was talking about recruiting. I asked you a clarifying question which is the normal thing to do when you don’t wanna assume you know what someone is talking about.

Firstly, I wasn’t referring to the previous staff. I was speaking to the fact that while having an excellent recruiter is great, it has to be the HEAD coach the recruit wants to play for ultimately.

While I’m sure Sharona Reaves played a big role in the Lady Vols signing those two top-five classes in 2017 and 2018, they came to play for the Holly. How they performed on the court once they got there is a whole different story. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s what it sounds you’re getting at — their actual performance once they got to UT. To me, that goes back to who coached them. It didn’t stop top recruits from coming though. I’m looking at our current coaches inability to close the deal with elite recruits. With the 2023 class (and the portal), that could change.

That was my point.
