Teams have a lot of information about each other at this stage of the season. A lot of games are going to be close down the stretch. I am glad after this game we have just two more SEC games on the road. If we can get this one were in great shape to finish strong in the league and get those first two NCAA games at home.

How did UF go from losing to Towson and George Mason this year and being generally terrible last year to being as extremely good as they have been recently?
I have not seen them play this year. What are we up against?
One of the best point guards in the SEC could be the best. Merritt is a very good player. They have some size inside. They are hot and cold can be very good or very bad. SC beat them 19 to 3 in the first quarter then ended up winning by 12 and they did not take out the starters. I would say game could go either way depends on players performances. We are inconsistent and so are they. If we get consistent play we win the game. If both teams play consistent I think we still win. The worry is we'll have some inconsistent performances from key players like at Auburn and that could be trouble.

I think they have cleaned up a few issues in their coaching staff as well as a player transferring out. Not to put it on her but they seem far more team oriented with her gone than they did when she was there. Everyone seems to be playing their role and allowing Smith to lead them. It will definitely be a fight, but one I feel we should win.

Should be a good game!

Florida leads the league in personal fouls so that could be a plus or a minus for us. On the road in the SEC that has me worried. With our improved FT shooting it could be good though. I expect a low scoring, scrappy affair. I’m going Lady Vols 62-54.

Florida matches up with us better than some teams but I do not think they have anyone who can guard Horston. Merritt is a good player but I don’t think her perimeter defense is good enough to keep Jordy in front. Look for her to have another big night. On the other end, we match up well with Merritt. She likes to shoot the 3 but our 4 players in Dye and Puckett have no problem keeping up with those players. She definitely prefers to face up which is a bonus for us IMO. She shoots a good % but is not likely to take you off the bounce. At 6’3” she doesn’t have a very tight handle. If she puts the ball down our guards can knock it loose easily.

Florida changed up their defenses some against LSU switching from man to zone. I expect we will see a fair bit of zone from them because they cannot matchup with Tamari well.

Florida relies on getting the majority of their scoring in transition or the secondary break. They are not a good half-court offensive team. Getting back and getting our defense set will be imperative. Ball control will also be very important for us. They try to jump the passing lanes on almost every possession. If our perimeter players will jump to the pass they will foul us a ton. It’ll look like a tackle when they make contact. A little flop or two early in the game to draw attention to it wouldn’t hurt us either.

I believe we will need Miles to play more minutes than she has been recently. Smith is their offense and after watching several games I believe the key to shutting them down is making it very difficult for her to catch the ball. Her defender needs to pick her up in the backcourt and force her to get rid of it. Walker will need Miles’ help keeping the pressure on for 40. Smith tends to score at the rim off the initial push beating her defender down the court. Once she’s been forced to give it up we need to make it extremely difficult for her to get the ball back. Their offense has to have the ball in her hands or it comes to a screeching halt. They will turn the ball over if we make it tough for her on the catch and force other players to handle.

Broughton has really come on the last few games and is a huge reason for their recent success. She’s a speedy guard with a good BBall IQ. Her role expanded when Briggs left the team. She is averaging 7 points on the season but is averaging almost 15 in her last 6 games. She gets out in the passing lanes and turns teams over. To me, she’s a player that should not score more than 10 points against us. She doesn’t like to handle the ball in their offense and will turn it over if she has to handle too much. Would like to see us force her to handle the ball in the halfcourt while we make it difficult for Smith to get it back.

Neither of their big girls are 3 point threats which will be a nice reprieve for Tamari compared to the last few games. Neither Dut nor Toonders have hit a 3 on the season. Neither can score against Tamari in the paint and they do not look for them much. I’m betting they try to go to them some early to see if they can tag a foul or two on TK. We should be able to turn them over trying to get the ball inside though, just not their game and they aren’t used to doing it.

Rimdahl is a dead eye shooter if you give her the time but is not athletic enough to score against our defense if we force her to put it on the floor. She can take players off the bounce but will be totally lost once she gets by as there is no way she can score at the rim against our interior defenders. Does not have much, if any, mid range game.

Looking at their stats last year to this year, it really looks like they've turned up the defense. The offensive numbers are very similar and pedestrian, but last year their defense was very bad, this year it appears to be very good, including 3 additional steals and 2 additional blocked shots per game.

Wow - thanks for such a thorough analysis. Very informative and thoughful.

Just win. Score more than Florida. Expect them to play Tennessee tough at home. As always, expect the refs to favor our opponent. Most important? Limit turnovers and fouls. Both men and women’s teams give the ball away toooo much.

I’m not a fan of the play on offense where the LVs stand four in a line sideline to sideline at the free throw line. The pg has no where to attack and it seems to clog things up more than anything. I’ve not seen it lead to any real production. I also think they’ve gone away from the TK screen for Horston that has worked since their freshman year regularly. Anyone have insight to this sudden change?

Not a big fan of our weave either. Not sure what we are trying to accomplish there other than run clock and take a late shot.

I can’t confirm but I believe we went away from the pick and roll with TK and Horston for a couple reasons. Jordan was incurring a lot of turnovers when we were running that. Also think it was creating foul problems for TK with moving screen calls/flops from smaller defenders. TK is too important defensively to pick up offensive fouls setting screens. She needs all 5 of hers for the paint on the other end.

Occasionally TK will screen for Burrell but usually seems to be our 4 players doing most of the screening. Would like to see us get Puckett a pick and pop once a game.

The play at the FT line I have no idea about. I have a defensive brain. Really have to watch close if I’m trying to figure out what we are doing offensively. My best guess would be that it’s just a way for Kellie to try to pull their defense out away from the rim so we can get better looks at the basket and board position. Teams are always trying to pack it in on us.

Yes we are not using that right. Mostly just not moving fast enough or setting good screens. Auburn runs that weave offense just like Schafer did at MSST. It can get you a good look at the basket but everyone has to cut and come off screens hard. Then someone can come off a screen and turn the corner.

Anytime we go to that I immediately think we are going to turn the ball over.

This is the one four high set and I think it is our best offensive set over the last two years. Point guard passing to the wing and then the wing driving across the lane for a layup has kind of been our go-to play when we need a bucket. There is a lot of room for the wings to create out of the one four high.

The point guard can drive off of a post screen, can actually even be a double screen by both posts.

Some people refer to this offense as UCLA 1–4 !

There is multiple options within the 1–4 but the success or failure depends on the players running it on offense and the defense to stop it !!!! All play’s will be successful if you run it RIGHT and of course the defense has to cooperate as well ! 😁

Gonna be a close game
I’m definitely worried about this one. Florida is a much improved team this year, and this is a classic “trap game” with the showdown with UConn coming up next. We’d better not be looking ahead. UF deserves our full focus. Anything less and we leave Gainesville with a loss.

I agree 100%. The weave, when run too slowly and without any discernible purpose -- like we usually do it  -- only serves to give opposing defenders a period of rest and relaxation as far as I can tell. It's the one thing about our offense that has, a couple of times, made me cringe. Those were times the defenders actually stood in place for the most part, only turning slightly in place to watch. You could almost read the defenders' minds: "What the .... !? Thanks! I needed to catch my breath!"

Gotta run that faster, with screens, and with an actual purpose, which is hopefully to get someone open to shoot -- NOT just to rest the defense. It has to be practiced A LOT to get it right and so that it doesn't look like they're literally thinking, "Now, I'll go toward you, and you go toward me, and we'll make a figure 8, and then you will come back around and I will come back around and then one of us will throw it somewhere ..." You can SEE them thinking about where to go. Cringe.

Just ... don't.
