Game Thread: (7/9) Lady Vols 63 - (3/3) Stanford 74

So, you're saying she can't want to help the team unless she plays the 4?

If you're going to quote me, please be kind enough to quote the whole sentence....not just a part of it. I said "Jordan wants to help the team so much she puts unnecessary pressure on herself. She has not learned to let the game come to her yet."

If you want to argue that....have at it.
Sorry, I didn't think the rest of the sentence changed the context. I was actually agreeing JH wants to help the team more than anything so she'd never refuse coaching instructions, especially when she's struggling and we need her so badly. 4 may not be her preference but I'd be shocked if that mattered much either to her or the coaching staff at this point.

I've been wondering about that with Emily the
last 2 years. Jmo it's either she doesn't feel she
is a good enough player or it's a personality
clash. We probably will never know.
It's also concerning how comfortable Karo looks sitting on the pine next to her.

Darby just isn’t open. She needs more time to get her shot off than she can get against a team like Stanford. Has had the same problem all season.

She really needs some individual film work to help her find ways to move without the ball and get open. She should watch film of Ashley Joens. Ashley isn’t exactly a super athlete but she’s so incredibly smart with her positioning and movement she’s hard to guard. She’s a deadeye shooter and frequently gets wide open looks just on being crafty moving without the ball.

We need to run some screens for her as well. All 3 of Prechtel’s shots came of great set plays. That elevator screen worked on us twice, once in each half. Would be a nice play for us to run to get her a look. Liked the down screen, wrap around play Va Tech ran for Sheppard as well.
That is on the coach, not the player. KJH needs to run an offense which will open her shooters. She has to do something to improve her defense.

Agree in this respect. We’re doing a lot of things better but we need some sets to incorporate other players better. Lots of stuff is a read right now. Need some situational offense that’s effective.

It's mind-boggling Kellie insists on starting her, but does absolutely nothing schematically to help her be successful on the court...

I can improve their foul shooting and I can be there tomorrow!

Kellie: All right, ladies! You have a choice. Either you can concentrate and hit your free throws...or...you can spend half an hour every day working with Coach Jumper!!!

Next game FT stat: 83%

;););)

Merry Christmas, Coach!!!

I figured the Darthvalanch would be coming. 9-1, a top ten team and now declared the worst (offensive) team in history after losing to Stanford!!!

When Rae went down, we knew there would be days like this. Up to this point, the team compensated for its offensive shortcomings with intense defense and rebounding. In the first half, we had poor shooting and bad defense. Stanford back doored and drove the lane at will.

In the 2nd half, the LVs adjusted defensively but never could make the critical shots to take the lead once they trimmed the 20 point lead down to 2 or 3. Missed FTs and lay-ups galore killed their chances. If they had not dug such a big hole, this coulda, woulda....

When you look at the game, Key on the bench and not much of factor when on the court; Horston could not buy a bucket till late when it was too late. Under those conditions, its actually surprising, they LVs were a able to get close. This team can be a great defensive team. Stanford showed them a very different look and it took the LVs awhile to adjust but they did. If and when Rae gets back, our offensive game should get better and this defense is for real. At the start of the season,. I think just about anybody would have been happy to be 9-1 right.

It is not a stat that tells you much other than the point differential while that player was on the court. Sara played well. She was just too often paired with people who did not.

In Key's case it tells you a lot because everyone was able to play much closer defense knowing she was in the back to clean things up and we were able to make our runs. But If you are on the court while Stanford is blowing by Rennie or Darby then your numbers will suffer. I think Darby gets beaten up on a bit much. She plays hard, but is put in a position where she has to do things she can't do. She is not starter quality, but I guess no one else has come along enough to supplant her. Rennie also plays hard but is totally incapable of contributing. A three ball specialist who is the worst three pt shooter on the team is pretty much on-brand for UT.
Thanks so much for the explanation! Numbers now make sense.
Agree re: Darby, great kid, can get hot shooting, expect her to be a team leader the next two years. Defending a Miles quick guard is tough for her but every player has a weakness. What fun would it be if you didn’t have anything to improve on!😃!
Thanks again!

Have to admit, once the LVs got down by 20 I thought it was basically over. Whatever they discussed at halftime obviously worked (credit to coaches) but getting that game back to within 3 took some fortitude. That’s the grit surfacing again, which is one of your team’s strongest qualities. Stanford went scoreless in the 3rd for almost 9 minutes. On a side note, Puckett really looked poised to me for a true freshman, the moment was not too big for her. She has a sweet stroke.
Stanford hit UT with a huge uppercut in the 2nd, but it did not knock them down. Most teams are on the mat after that. Frankly, I don’t know what will happen when the Cardinal play SC on Tuesday, but I suspect their 3 point shooting will cause problems and tbh, it looks to me like they are starting to gel, they move the ball much better than SC does, especially without Henderson playing, which nobody knows if she will yet.
I’m hoping Henny is back and ready to go. She’s fun to watch. Should be a great game!

Her defense is getting better, and she was running the floor better yesterday. She's only a sophomore, there's improvement potential there. She just needs to figure out how to get open for her shot, and the coaches need to help her with that. She can become a very good role player for us if those things start coming together.

I agree with you She's only a sophomore, there's improvement potential there. All i`m saying is right now it`s very difficult for Darby right now to shake tight man to man defense when that`s not her game she is a spot up shooter. I agree with you 100% the coaches need to help her more.

10,017 per utsports, quite likely higher due to the offer of free attendance for ticket 🎟 holders from the cancelled UT vs Memphis game.
Looked more like 8500 to me. End zones were practically empty, no one on upper deck above the lower balcony. But good atmosphere. Winnable game if hit a few free throws and not give up that three at end of third quarter (possible 5 point turnaround right there if we had scored). Despite this we were as good as Stanford without Rae and Key on the bench a lot.

Or the coaches could play wynn😁

If they don’t somehow figure out how to play defense without key in the game and how to cover three point shooters, the sec regular season could end up very differently that what many of you imagine

That concerns me as well. Without Key in the game we have no height in the post and players lose sight of their man. While I’m not overly concerned it is definitely something they must be addressed. Striplin and Saunders have to become playable

And those free throws!! Haley gets 12-12 so it goes to show that with some kind of preparation this Tennessee team should already have been much better with free throws.
