Game Thread: (7/9) Lady Vols 63 - (3/3) Stanford 74

You are right. Our offense was weak and disjointed.

Maybe Kellie should follow Pat's example, and ask Harry Perretta for some pointers.
You would think we could shoot on our own goals since we practice on them week after week. Is Harry still living? He could help only if he could convince players to always look for the better shot before they jack up one in the first ten seconds. If he knows how to correct a free throw shooters we would have at least five to six players for him to work with.

I don`t disagree with you need to make a little more effort get her open, But at the same time we all need to remember in HS Darby did not handle the ball a lot just a spot up shooter from 3. So to me and it shows on the court she lacks the footwork and speed to defend the more athletic players. Let`s make no mistake Darby is in a tough position on the offensive end and the defensive end.

Her defense is getting better, and she was running the floor better yesterday. She's only a sophomore, there's improvement potential there. She just needs to figure out how to get open for her shot, and the coaches need to help her with that. She can become a very good role player for us if those things start coming together.

I think Horston should be a stretch four has a lot of length and could be a terrific player around the basket and mid -range game

I've often wondered if she would be a better 4 than anything else. She's taller than her height with her hops, and she is very strong and quick. I think she would do well in the post, even against taller players. Her miod-range shooting would be an asset in that position as well.

Harry Perretta Announces His Retirement from Coaching - Villanova University

He retired at the end of last season. He and Pat were good friends.

I can improve their foul shooting and I can be there tomorrow!

I think Horston should be a stretch four has a lot of length and could be a terrific player around the basket and mid -range game. She is also a tremendous defensive player. Her biggest problem is like you said dribbling, bad passing, and several unnecessary shots.

I've floated the same idea but I don't think she wants to play the 4. She has plenty of quicks and she's strong at 6'2"

Jordan wants to help the team so much she puts unnecessary pressure on herself. She has not learned to let the game come to her yet.

J has to get better being a ball handler. I don’t how many times she’s left the ball behind when she does her cross over. Even when she’s already in the paint, she’ll still try to do a lil razzle dazzle instead of taking what the D give her. If she’ll just put her head down and drive hard to the basket she’ll win every time.

Good call and it was headed that way,,,down 52-48 with 8:23 to go and then they let Brecktel shoot 3 3;s

This game was 13-9 TN at 2:31 in Q1....at 3:02 in Q2 it was 19-36
27-6 run
No game was ever won in the first 2 Q's, but many are lost in them.

The first two timeouts are for in-game and the other two are for end game.
We went home with one in our pocket

Horston, for all her pluses, still makes the passes that are not caught, which lead to another lost scoring opportunity....

The motion offense requires motion to be effective....Too often Darby "is floating" waiting for a pass....Perhaps if she would sprint a time or two through the lane she would find herself open for a quick 3 ball on the other side...

The third quarter showed the LVs have the capabilities to play much better than they did in the other quarters....

The free throw shooting is just pitiful....Coach Kellie has got to take control of this deficiency before it ends their season..

I don't think she wants to play the 4.
Jordan wants to help the team so much
Both these can't be true. At this point, I can't imagine JH turning down any coaching move that might help her improve offensively. She seems more like the second statement to me, really wants to help no matter what position.

I've long said the farther off the ball the better for JH.

Jordan takes matters into her own hands and the problem is that the good coaches will scheme and have the players to stop it. Jordan is at her best when playing one on one......not one on three. I doubt she creates such difficult shots in practice and its more like a spur of the moment decision from the way the other players act. I could be wrong but thats how it strikes me. Even if Rae returns, especially if Rae returns, Jordan has to stop forcing inefficient play. Her supporting cast has to do a better job of getting open so she can facilitate and won't feel like the only option.

There is SOME reason Coah K won't play Emily and there is SOME reason she is playing Tess as a starter...can't figure out either one???
I've been wondering about that with Emily the
last 2 years. Jmo it's either she doesn't feel she
is a good enough player or it's a personality
clash. We probably will never know.

So, you're saying she can't want to help the team unless she plays the 4?

If you're going to quote me, please be kind enough to quote the whole sentence....not just a part of it. I said "Jordan wants to help the team so much she puts unnecessary pressure on herself. She has not learned to let the game come to her yet."

If you want to argue that....have at it.

we do this historically,,,Kortney, Emily, etc,,,we get players coach's don't seem to know how to use to their strength

Put Emily in and play an 3-1-1 zone and tell her to cut loose and be mean!

Coach, much respect, but this is a terrible idea. Until Emily can get back on defense she can’t play. Every time she’s in the game she gives up 1-2 wide open layups just not getting back.

Doesn’t matter if you’re in a man or a zone. If your player beats you to the block by 15 steps one of three things are going to happen.

1. They score
2. You foul
3. Both

Of course they can. So, you're saying she can't want to help the team unless she plays the 4?
Doesn't have to want to, but if she wants to help the team she can't turn down any coaching suggestions for improvement. At this point of her prolonged offensive struggle, I'd be shocked if she were allowed to veto any new plan or move to try to help her help the team. Something's got to change, her handle and decision making is not getting better.

For all intent and purpose, we lost this game in the 2nd quarter. They looked unorganized and lost. Also, Darby, our three point specialist seems scared to shoot the ball. Horston has to quit turning the ball over. We really need Burrell back on both sides of the ball.

Darby just isn’t open. She needs more time to get her shot off than she can get against a team like Stanford. Has had the same problem all season.

She really needs some individual film work to help her find ways to move without the ball and get open. She should watch film of Ashley Joens. Ashley isn’t exactly a super athlete but she’s so incredibly smart with her positioning and movement she’s hard to guard. She’s a deadeye shooter and frequently gets wide open looks just on being crafty moving without the ball.

We need to run some screens for her as well. All 3 of Prechtel’s shots came of great set plays. That elevator screen worked on us twice, once in each half. Would be a nice play for us to run to get her a look. Liked the down screen, wrap around play Va Tech ran for Sheppard as well.
