Game Thread: (7/9) Lady Vols 70 - Arkansas 63

I guess they figured that pressuring the officials would eventually give them an advantage. For much of the game, it made ya wonder.

Our posts were visibly frustrated several times by the excessive contact, resulting in some really bad no-form throws at the basket (as opposed to actual shots). Once I saw Tamari get popped in the mouth as she crossed the lane, snapping her head back; meanwhile, Miles was getting called for a touch foul or screen out front.

Good late comeback win against a physical, foul-happy Arkansas team. A rather low assist total today, and I think the team's
weak three-point shooting is going to be a problem in some games going forward, but on the plus side great to see Burrell back on
the court. She'll give this team a major boost if she can get up to speed fairly soon.

Family event and I couldn't tune in until the middle of the 2nd Q with us up 31-24. We proceeded to stink it up all the way til 4 min. to go in the 3rd, and the refs were atrocious to boot. I thought I had killed us.

Ah, but these women never say die, do they? And there was Rae out there briefly....all in all a great end to what had been a tough week for Big Orange Country.

You know you suck at being a fan when that's all you can say after a big road win.
What is bothering all these smack-talking non-lady vol fans that troll in here is the fact that we are 13-1 and not doing everything on the offensive end, as well as we can yet. They will continue to improve on that end and at the free-throw line too. As the season progresses and the offense improves in February and in March like another well-known coach at Tennessee's teams did (Pat Summitt), other teams still have to contend with the top defensive and rebounding team in the country.

Seems like Ramirez only likes the drifting pull-up three going to the left. Perhaps the defender should be cheating ever so slightly to that side to make sure they get to the screen first so they can go over it. Get to the spot first so the post is tempted to slide. If they are moving, make sure to hit the post and sell it. Another way to ensure success defending her is to not have Darby on her at all.

She definitely likes that corner 3 as a set shot.

I will say, I do feel Arkansas got the short end of the stick on scheduling due to COVID. I’m certain the would have much rather opened SEC play against Ole Miss than against us. Changes the complexion of your season losing the first conference game.

Ole Miss is tough but I think it would have been a better matchup for Arkansas to start SEC play. I do think Arkansas will beat Ole Miss when they play. Austin likes to face up and Wolfenbarger is much more comfortable guarding like that. It was laughable watching her try to guard our post players.

It is what it is. They have a lot of redeeming qualities but converting FT's does not appear to be one of them.

These are challenging times for Darth. He is hanging on to the poor FT % for dear life.

It is frustrating leaving that many points off the scoreboard. With a decent FT % this game would have felt comfortable. But the story is not the FT but Rae getting back and even hitting her first 3.

Final thoughts on the game not one of our best performances of the season. We can play a lot better defensively even if they only shot 30 percent and 20 from the three most of it was on them they had some really excellent open looks. Glad the Refs called 29 of the plus 50 fouls Arkansas committed at least calling that many gave us a chance to win. Arkansas shot 40 threes which I thought was poor judgement on their part as it turned out to be a large factor as to why they lost the game. Great to win when you don't play your best as a team defensively, but had some players really come through offensively. Dye had her best game 6 of 9 from the field and Green was 4 of 4 and hit 3 of 4 from the line. Key of course was a player they could not guard Arkansas got away with a lot of fouls and many of them while guarding Key and a few more guarding Horston. Big win on the road just hoping we'll get in a different pattern of getting in winning position way before five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Always good to read the opposition's local newspaper after a win...

No. 7 Tennessee rallies past Arkansas women

I like this paragraph:
"Tennessee leads the nation in field-goal percentage defense (30.2%) and the long Lady Vols caused Arkansas issues, too. The Razorbacks made 23 of 76 shots from the floor for a season-low 30.3%."

A stat of which to be very proud.

Yes! Not even the worst critic of Tennessee can take away the FACT that they have been consistently outstanding in this area, nor dispute that this is a particularly helpful area to be excelling in. It cannot be that nearly every single team Tennessee has played has simply “had an off night shooting.” The Lady Vols’ length and defense affects a lot of their shots, and even the open shots opponents sometimes get have been altered by their own wavering confidence — caused by our good defense.
