Game Thread: (7) Lady Vols 86 - (RV) Arkansas 83

Some posters keep attacking the coaching win, lose or draw. Very few teams go undefeated, especially in a conference like the SEC. We lost to Auburn and that was a bad loss. We came back and beat a very good Arkansas team. I give KJH credit, she did not make any wholesale substitutions which really cost us. Because of the makeup of our team we will have a tough time with good shooting teams, especially ones with speed. Sadly, a lot of fouls were not called against Key in the post, this happens against many post who are 6’ 5” or taller, Key is not the only one. Like Key most tall post get so many fouls called on them that they became gun shy trying to stopping such unnecessary fouls. I would like to see it addressed with officials. We should all be excited that we won and did not have an Auburn hangerover. Don’t get me wrong there were mistakes made but we kept playing hard and came out with a hard fought win. Go Lady Vols!!!

According to @Bballnut1952 Uconn doesn’t cancel games!
I never said that though I should have. UConn had to three games postponed, not cancelled.

One because Marquette had Covid issues and the next two because UConn had Covid issues. But you would know that if you actually understood my previous post on this.

And in the Big East the conference postponed the games, not the teams. Don’t know if that is true in other conferences.

This was a different crew than the Auburn game...that was Dee Kantner, Brian Enterline and Fatou Cissoko-Stephens. The crew for the Arkansas game was Felicia Grinter, Karen Preato, Brian Garland.

Dee? And BRIAN??!?! No wonder we lost. He is absolutely the worst ref we could possibly get. And that is NOT wearing my orange colored glasses.

It's reasonable to say Arky has improved more than we have since the first game. But the context is we started way ahead of the curve of what we were predicted to be, espec without Rae, and they started out worse than predicted. Our progress has gotten a little stuck the last couple of games and they're on fire. So we sort of met in middle. Except we won.
I think you can say Ramirez has improved or at least played better in this game. Otherwise hard to come up with any evidence that they have improved more. We still outrebounded them by 20 and it was 16 the first time and we shot a better percentage than they did just like the first game. The only reasonable way I can see they are more improved is that they made 10 threes instead of seven and most of that was Ramirez having a little better game than last time.

I think its their 3 straight lopsided SEC wins including by 14 over LSU. They've scored in the 90s in 2 of those, 80s against us. Playing their game successfully right now. Or were, until last night.

I can agree they are improved team don't agree they have improved more than us since they still couldn't beat us. Both games were totally similar we were behind going into the fourth quarter and won both times. Regardless I'd rather be 8 and 1 in the league instead of 4 and 4.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Arkansas also has Barnum back. Someone with decent size. She didn't play the first game against UT. Arkansas had just blew out their last 3 opponents(including LSU), and played SC tough in their last loss eventually losing by 9. This was a good win after such a bad loss.

Actually, Ramirez played essentially the same game the second time as the first. Five made threes in each game, 29 points in 44 minutes last night and 26 points in 40 minutes in the first game, 8 rebounds last night and 6 in the first game, 2 steals in each game. I would say that the player with the significant improvement was Samara Spencer. 17 points, 4 rebs, and 4 assists last night compared to 8 points, 6 rebs, 0 assists, and 1 steal in the first game. She did play 43 minutes in last night's game versus 25 in the first game, which may be a sign of Coach Neighbor's trust in her.

She played that many minutes because Mykayla Daniels went out with the injury before the half. That was a big blow for them and not to be overlooked. She’s definitely their floor general and runs that potent offense. Spencer stepped up and did a great job in the moment last night.

Felt a bit bad for her when she missed the two free throws at the end of OT. I was SO relieved though, so not that bad. Neighbors definitely has a lot of trust in her. Eaton is a really good offensive player but her defense is too poor to get many minutes. He couldn’t play her last night because we kept posting her up and scoring when she came in.

Hard for me to exclude her from POY consideration. She has killed us both times.

One of the purest shots in the nation. She’s a big game player and that always puts you in POY contention in my eyes.

I don’t see how it can’t be Aliyah Boston, but Amber should be in the conversation.

Horston is making her case as well. I’ve been least impressed with the player getting the most hype. Howard’s team isn’t winning either.

Tennessee needed 5 extra minutes, at home, which is a pretty significant difference for starters.

Arkansas also shredded the Lady Vols' vaunted defense for 83 points, easily a season high. Even taking away the OT period, Arkansas scored 75 which is a season high for regulation... just a game after giving up 71 to lowly Auburn. Either Tennessee's defense has regressed, or teams have figured them out (or both). Meanwhile, Arkansas has been playing their best ball of the season.

The crowd made a huge difference, which Kellie acknowledged after the game. As I asked before, do you really think Tennessee wins this one if they weren't at home?

Does it matter??? We have beat them twice, let it go!

They still lost the game so accept it. That is 2 to 0 for Tennessee is the better team. Your contempt for Tennessee is something abnormal. Yes we already won at their place.

Nice deflection. You said there wasn't any evidence Arkansas had improved more. There is plenty of evidence, you just choose to ignore it.

Yes, Tennessee got the win which is the most important thing, but it's clear their defensive struggle against Auburn wasn't an anomaly...

I don't see where they have improved anymore than we have since we won down there by seven and we won again by three. We outrebounded them by 20 and down there 16. They lost both games if you want to say they improved I can agree but not more than Tennessee cause they still didn't win and if we played them again think we would beat them again. Arkansas defense was worse than ours we outscored them.

You mean 4 games? Marquette, Depaul, Georgetown, and Villanova. And they were postponed, I wonder why? Could it be because there is a likelihood that their star could return just in time for those games? Oh I guess that's the conspiracist in me!

The UConn web site moved that game on their listed schedule to where it was actually played. So it was my mistake to not include DePaul. See how I did that? Admit I made a mistake?

But it was still only 21 days. And South Carolina cancelled their game not UConn. So you stated something wrong. More than one time.

If you mean Bueckers? She wasn't back for the make up game. And the fact that you believe that UConn INTENTIONALLY postponed that game tells me you still have on that tinfoil hat.

The difference could also be attributed to the change of heart in the reffing. I guess whining enough at the refs will get them to change their minds. A big kudos to Key for keeping her composure despite repeatedly getting mugged. She was critical in the closing part of the game.
