Game Thread: (7) Lady Vols 86 - (RV) Arkansas 83

LADY VOLS now have:

7 4th quarter comebacks
6 comebacks by 7 or more

6 wins in which Lady Vols had less than 19% chance to win at some point in a game. (3 in which they had less than 10% chance)

I just watch the games and don't know the team as well as most on here. At first, I thought this team just start slow (ergo the need for comebacks) but as I've watched them through the year. I've come to the conclusion that they just wear teams down. The opposing teams are still playing 100 but are worn down and their 100 in 4th is not what it was in the 1st. The Vols look to be in good condition and have a good rotation usually (minus Auburn). The boxing out and rebounding just wears teams down. GBO

This is Neighbors’ modus operandi. His main job (or so it seems) during the game is to cajole the officials into helping his team. His lead assistant actually coaches them during breaks.
Interesting observation. What the tv viewers heard, perhaps very early in the game, was that Neighbors was so upset with how many fouls called on his team after the last UT game that he consulted with the SEC officials about how to get less fouls called on his team. I hope they told him the answer was to stop fouling :p!

That was an extremely gracious statement by Mike Neighbors following such a heartbreaking loss. Obviously not ALL coaches handle tough losses with such grace. Some of them choose to use their post-game interview time to play embarrassingly transparent, overused mind games with their players instead. They berate them, insult them, treat them like they are six-year-olds who are immature enough to not see through the juvenile tactic.

Good on Neighbors for not being like THAT.
I also liked how he helped that poor little girl who (thank you bball gods) missed those two free throws. She was ready to break down and not be a bit of help the rest of the game but he just put his arm around her and kept it there the whole time. Didn't have to say a word, just loving comfort. Good on him again.
Kellie could have had an ankle injury after that "flop". But all smiles watching that video. Fun to be around!!
LOL 40-something Kellie showed quite a bit of agility, dress and heels and all. She avoided the sure viral video that would have happened if she had gone bottom over elbows and fallen right on top of Miles! Loved her follow up comment about the "flop". Props again to whoever keeps coming up with the post game celebrations. Maybe that's Emily, KS and Jessie's job.

Yes. that was an act of confidence and class

Another poorly played game. They need a coach that has a clue on offense

They've got one,,,what they don't need is another Garth

Good insight. The LVs are relentless on rebounding and defensive pressure but they are not a particularly good shooting team. When the shots are falling, they can dominant opponents, as in their surprisingly big wins against Texas, Ole Miss, and KY. On more standard shooting nights, it can get a little nervy for fans. It is hard to play high intensity defense, versus just good defense, for 40 minutes. Against Ark. they really kicked up the intensity in the 2nd half.

Horston may lead the SEC in shots hitting the back of the iron.....Just a little more arc on her shot would increase her shooting percentage by at least 20%.

Ramirez of Arkansas reminds me of Diana Taurasi....One hell of a fine shooter.

Not sure how we won, but a win's a win....

It's not about wearing teams down. Arkansas was not worn down. Rather, we have a pattern of play that involves having a bad quarter or two in the first half, or maybe the 3rd quarter of games, falling behind, and then having to raise our intensity to come from behind. We had a terrible 2nd quarter last night, fell behind by 11 points or so, and were not playing with much urgency on either end of the court. In the 2nd half the intensity was there, and we closed the deficit and eventually won. It's rare for any team to play well in every quarter, but you don't want a quarter or two every game when you're borderline bad and you fall behind. That's risky business.

A great sign of progress for the team is the increasing number of trolls (who just want to wind folks up) and Kellie-haters. The latter can just be ignored, but the former offer priceless humor (well, not actual humor...just amusing for being cluelessly lame). These folks forget that their posting history follows them.

You know they're not serious since they were predicting early in the season that we would. be a "sub .500 SEC team," was overrated at #15, was in no way a Top Ten team, Kellie has to go, etc. The fact that they continue to post this stuff after being exposed so many times demonstrates that they just want to upset fans. You do wish they'd put more effort into their posts or buy an insult instructional APP or something to raise the level a bit. It's just embarrassing to the rest of us to be host to the Carrot Tops of trolls. We deserve the Ricky Gervaises or Stephen Wrights or John Cleeses.

Drought quarters are a BIG problem. During those bad quarters, you will notice that the LVs often have 3- 4 defensive possessions in a row where the opponent does not score but we are shooting goose eggs or turning the ball over in return and then the other team finally hits a three and it goes on like that. Also, in those bad stretches, we have often decent shots and are missing lay-ups or open threes, so it is not that the offense scheme is not working. That part of the team DNA is hard to figure and I am sure they are all working improving there.

By wearing down the opposition, I don't think any means falling over from exhaustion. It is the relative or comparative degree of fatigue. Suddenly the open shots start coming up a little bit short, missing a pair of clutch FTs, mental mistakes that a team was not making so much when they were fresher and do more of as fatigue takes a subtle toll, etc., etc.

Out of the last seven games the team has played five on the road and only two at home. I think were in a slight slump and are showing some fatigue from all this travel in the middle of the schedule. Sad new is we have to go on the road for two more in a row which will be 7 of 9 on the road. This has been a treacherous part of the schedule. We end up with 4 of 6 at home but still the last part of the schedule this season will be 9 of 13 on the road. That is why I do not like non conference games in the middle of conference play because your schedule in conference play this season wasn't evenly balanced. So two more road games coming up hopefully were up to the task and can win both.

I'll split the baby down the middle. Drought quarters and stretches are a huge problem. Good point that droughts often stifle chances to come back or to build on a lead after defensive stops. Overall we are just such a poor shooting team. We have to create more shots for the better shooters, Puckett, Rae, sometimes Darby, and way more inside shots for Key. Although a lay up for Key is still unfortunately an adventure. Obviously we have to get Dye's shot back on track. She's not just missing, she's endangering backboards all over the SEC.

IMO the "wearing down" of the opposition is also a thing, and part of that is we are no longer the LVs these SEC upperclassman are used to seeing. No more folding like a cheap suit, which is what they're historically used to. I'm sure they're told the new LVs never quit but until they experience late in a game it doesn't register.

The resilience is great and inspiring, but like Kellie said last night I wish we didn't have to count on it so much.

Good comeback win against a team that, with its quickness, presents a lot of matchup problems for UT. After a really poor 2nd quarter, we came out with a lot more intensity in the 2nd half, which turned what could easily have been a loss into a close victory. We moved the ball better in the second half (but it's still not nearly as good as it should be), shot the ball better and worked harder on defense. Horston did her thing and had another strong all-around performance--she was good--but I thought Burrell's play in the 2nd half was a big factor in the win, and Key made some crucial free-throws. In fact, our team FT shooting--15 of 20--was a big plus in the game. This team BADLY needs Burrell to get back to close to her top form, as overall this team has some talent issues, and was pleased to see her raise her game when we needed it. Let's hope her form continues to improve. Puckett had a solid performance: She's not the most gifted player athletically, which could be said for a number of players on this team, but has a good understanding of the game and can make baskets.

Walker in the first half was causing us defensive problems because she wasn't fighting through screens. She kept switching off, leaving Key and others trying to cover quicker Arkansas players, And frankly they were beating us off the dribble all night. But guards are supposed to fight through screens and only call out a switch if it is necessary--and in the 2nd half (after I"m sure the coaches got on her), she fought through screens more often and produced a much better defensive effort.
Great assessment. I thought walkers defense on Ramirez in the fourth quarter and OT were huge. She wasn’t getting the same looks she was earlier in the game.

Nothing says the Auburn game was an anomaly like a hard fought, come-from-behind, overtime victory against an unranked team at home.

Arkansas is very well-coached and has clearly improved more than Tennessee since their first meeting. The Lady Vols are fortunate the home and home schedule fell the way it did. They would not have won this game in Fayetteville like they did earlier...
