Game Thread: Carson Newman v Lady Vols, Thurs Oct 31; Home-FCC; 6:30PM; SEC+ network....Win Lv's 135-49

What I really enjoyed was seeing more options on offensive end, last year everyone knew the ball was going to Rickea. Spear, Whitethorn, Spearman, Cooper and others can score the ball.

The Defensive end I expect for Lady Vols to give up some bunnies but trading 2's for 3's wins in the end all day long..

The thing is that the LVs ALWAYS have an athleticism advantage over D2 Carson Newman. Heck, Tess is relatively quick against these players. In past seasons, however, the LVs have not been able to utilize that advantage and CN often has looked surprisingly competitive.

In stark contrast, this game was a complete blitzkrieg blowout.

The wolves were sent, the sharks smelt the blood in the water, the Kraken was unleashed, Godzilla crushed Tokyo, King Kong batted down all the helicopters.

How this absolute, soul crushing, bone marrow sucking domination of a lesser opponent will translate to games against more talented teams, who will have the benefit of scouting reports, remains to be seen. Nonetheless, this game was a good sign in an ongoing series of good signs that have been sent since CKC was hired.
Yes. I looked up post-Pat LV vs. CN pre-season games’ stats. Even with some of our best teams 2012-2023, the stat lines weren’t as good as they are from the game this week.

Just ask South Carolina,,,you know,, those National Champions of last year,,,they started their season full of cupcakes,,,de ja vous,,,maybe

[...] Fair point that CKC brought in a group of players with lots of lateral quickness but the intensity of the defense was a at level not seen around here since the glory days.

I think it is easy to make too much of the "system" when the key is really just doing the fundamentals of keeping opposing players in front of you.
Well, actually... the ability to defend like that, with such tenacity, is because of the system.

Players go onto the court knowing they're going to play for a minute-and-a-half before their subs replace them. They know the staff expects them to be totally gassed when they come out of the game, or they weren't doing what they were told to do.

So our players actually "leave it all out on the court" repeatedly throughout each game... and that's why the intensity of play was different from years past! (Actually, from systems past.)

I actually expect that sub every two minutes model will moderate as the season goes on.

No doubt, CKC seems to have upped the defensive intensity but if you play hard with bad positioning, you still get beat-- think about all the times Wynn got beat to the baseline by less athletic players over the last two seasons. Bad defensive positioning actually means you are in a chase mode and wasting energy with inefficient play.

But, yes these changes are part of the "CKC system" in the sense that CKC and her staff have instilled (or so it seems) better defensive fundamentals.

We force the game to be played to our strengths and training this way, and if the opposing coach doesn't respect that and spread the minutes amongst his players himself, he's going to find himself with some gassed players by the end of the 1st half, and throughout the 2nd half.

And if our opponents just don't have the depth to do that... you're going to see what happened to C-N happen to those teams too. Because fresh us vs gassed them has a way of making even decent competition look like they don't belong on the same court with this Lady Vols squad.

Lady Vols are going to get upset by a bad team if they don't improve their shot selection and box out better. They are getting too big for their britches is what Caldwell is thinking. Marshall had zero talent, but they boxed out better than these prima donna's. Marshall had to have good shot selection because they could not make it with a hand in their face. Go Herd!

135 points and shot selection is what you lead off with. Regroup and come back later on. Also, Tennessee isn’t Marshall. We don’t get scheduled for homecoming.

Correct, Tennessee isn't Marshall because Marshall is blue collar and hard working. We can't buy our way to anything. We have to work for it. It takes zero talent to box out.

That one seems irritated we hired CKC. I can almost understand from a Marshall fan perspective. Most of the other Herd fans have been congenial.

I'll give vunhopper this: looking at the video replay, many of the rebounds we grabbed were from behind C-N players, and without a foul being called only due to our height and length advantage.

Maybe rebounding position wasn't necessary this game, but...

Sure you can. It’s called winning. We all started at the same spot, others adapted and others sit there and take it.

well I’m a Marshall West Virginian. My son played football for Marshall. I’m proud of Kim. West Virginia born and raised and I want to see her succeed. We’ve had a number of pretty good coaches come out of West Virginia over the years.
Plus Marshall was a mediocre team before Kim took over. If he believes all he said he should be optimistic for Lady Vols future. After all she’s only just begun. And we all know it took a couple of months for the Herd to start clicking. I’m a gung-ho Vol fan now because of Kim

Well, okay. I’m just curious to find out what the negavols need from the Lady Vols in the Samford game to be impressed.

Look, I am 100% behind CKC and co,,,but,,,Masse has Samford #256 and UT Martin is #194...it isn't until we play MTSU #51 that we will get a good barometer

that said, these games are still very crucial and important, as proven by Mulkey last year,,,she dined on cupcakes in the start and feasted on the entre's at the end

I will play. The shot selection was fine. CKC wants her team taking lots of three. If you are gonna complain about that, then go out and scream at the wind.

Rebounding is an interesting matter. The LVs did have some good box outs on the defensive end but that it is an area that can and will get better. But when a team takes a lot of threes, the rebounds tend to be long ones. So, being in a classic box out position can actually be a disadvantage for the offensive rebound. Grabbing long rebounds is more about quickness and anticipation.

I Herd that,,,good point

and Vun,,refs don't call over the back's unless it is with contact of an opponent...Using athleticism and leaping to "snag" the rebound over an opponent isn't just for the boys. Just bc their females doesn't mean they have to play by rules from the 70's,,,The boys have been snagging the ball out of the air from behind for years. Believe it or not, females can actually do what boys do.
