Game Thread: Carson Newman v Lady Vols, Thurs Oct 31; Home-FCC; 6:30PM; SEC+ network....Win Lv's 135-49

Latham needs more minutes than Favor and Jillian. Wells doesn’t look ready for this system yet. Strickland got the minutes that she will get during the season (4-6).

Shot selections and one more needs to improv. SLOB defense has to improve as well.
Is Latham on the outside on this team for playing time? If so, I’m surprised. She was a starter as a freshman on a very good Syracuse team last season. All ACC freshman. Agree on Wells, she is likely 8-10 on the option list to play tbh. Maybe I’m wrong there. On Strickland, I agree now. She is not elite enough to get major minutes, but she can still play a role.

Watkins not likely to see the court this season. Tac is a freshman, who knows? At LSU, Smith is solid, Del Rosario is no where near dominant, maybe one day, not now. Morrow is actually 6’, listed at 6’1”. Tough player, not a true post. Texas will live or die by the play of Harmon and Booker, their post options are pedestrian.

This is the year in the SEC where guards rule. SC’s strength is in their guards this year, Raven, Tessa, Pao Pao and especially Fulwiley. Those four together are their strength. They are also good upfront without Watkins, and in the absence of a Cardoso, but it’s not the same, the guards have to be the alphas now.
Watkins should transfer to Lady Vols :)

Latham got two early fouls in first half and then got a third quickly in the 2nd half. I think this limited her playing time. Also, she did not seem to be in the zone this game as some of her teammates did. It will be interesting to see if she plays a bigger role moving forward.

Latham is an elite talent… that should either be starting or be with the 2nd uni. I was surprised to see her check in for the first time around the 4:30-5 min mark in the 1Q. Which makes her the bottom 3 rn. Was surprised that Favor went in before her. LATHAM has a high IQ. I love how she actually sits when she D’s up and she will good on the back end of the press…. she does a great job of anticipating the passes. She is more mobile and athletic than Hollingshead and Favor. Wells looked loss defensively and her close out speed is lacking rn…. I expect her to get better by Feb

100%, Latham was a player I was expecting to show out. Still time, but Puckett looks the part early in that spot,

Her biggest detriment last year was propensity for foul trouble, only thing that limited her minutes imo. Hope she figures that out quick, she is a talent. She may never be an 18/12 type player, but she absolutely can be a 12/10 type, We will see. I have not given up on her potential, lot of games left.

That was impressive. Of course we have to calibrate for the level of comp but it was still nice to see the LVs dominate a game from start to finish. Whitehorn and Cooper look they will be the engines this season.Jewel and Puckett look ready to go and Boyd does not look like a freshman. Good showing from spearman.

Spencer will be the 1PG, She will give offense when needed, but focus on quarterbacking the alphas. Whitehorn and Coop will be dynamic. Coop will get better as the year progresses, Scary good maybe. Jewel is going to be Jewel and a great player in the SEC. Puckett will be better than last year, which is pretty good. Spearman likely the top big over Hollingshead, maybe tbd, but looks that way. There are 4 other players that will be contributors, you saw it. This LV team is real.

CKC has put her team together and trained them in her system to be menacing, and good at what they want to do. In just her first season. Nobody will look fwd to playing this version of the LV’s. Caldwell was a great reach hire, I believe that. She is cutting edge and that is good for the game and the LV program. Fans of the LV’s need to keep all of their highest goals for this year in front of them, it’s possible.

I think Tenn is last year’s NCSU tbh, a team that came from nowhere and became one of the best in the nation. I mean, what is their ceiling? You can’t say right now, it’s potentially really high.

This UT team is different folks, it’s right there in front of our eyes.

I should have mentioned Spencer! She looked very in control on the court. There has been a massive infusion of athleticism and some returners, like Jillian have probably moved down the depth chart but she is still there best option when they will need some size in the post, the plus to this game is that the team looked really good in this press, press style but they were playing an overmatched opponent who got physically overwhelmed. So another positive step but they have not been tested yet,

This LV team might be as good as any team in the nation when they play their style and don’t get knocked off their game plan. Listen, I understand the level of play they will face in conference. The OOC schedule should go 11-0 before conference play, no true tests in that span outside of a very thin FSU squad. Iowa is a shadow of prior, they won’t be able to match UT’s depth or skill. 11-0. Uconn will likely beat UT, but no way is that a 100% given. And Texas, LSU and SC will be favored in those matchups, but like the UConn game, none are sure losses. This UT team can play, and in a style that can create great upsets.

Unofficial rule #1 of the Lady Vols VolNation forum - never read too much into the Carson-Newman exhibition game.
You may be correct, but if you are not watching closely what is going on with this team, you might be missing the boat. They can play ball and they have ballplayers now. Don't bet against this team. It’s not like the UT teams from the past 8-12 years, this one has some real teeth to their game.

Not missing anything. I didn't say they were bad. I didn't say they couldn't play. I just said I wouldn't draw any strong conclusions from the Carson-Newman game. I have seen many many UT vs Carson-Newman games over the years. I have learned to take very little from them.

You never saw one like this before. Ever.

I guarantee everyone here, this version of the LV’s will be considered by all SEC teams to be a bitch to play. Most will take a loss and the best teams will struggle in their matchups. This is real. I’m not predicting an SEC championship in CKC’s first season, I’m saying you can see what she is building. I think she is a great coach with a new cutting edge system and she knows the players she needs to make it work. She will get good players to this system. She is a keeper type unless I’m just wrong here.

Could be some bumps in the road the first year, small matter.

Tempered optimism. I remember thinking the football offense and Nico were about to set season records. We saw how competition level can grossly overstate how good you are.

Still, it’s hard not to be highly encouraged by how this team played. Add in the UNC result if true and this group of ladies is looking much better than anyone would have thought a month ago.

I would have to disagree. These girls still need to be in the weight room working on maintaining.
That is a given. However, this team is in better physical condition than any Lady Vol team I have seen since Pat was in her prime. What a pleasure to see all the player being able to run up and down the court without falling over from fatigue.

Teamwork aside, WHAT YOU COULD SEE was each players speed, twitch, overall athleticism and willingness to buy in to the schemes on both end of the floor. Good place to start.

Working into being able to use them as interchangeable parts with different lineups will take some time but did not see a non-fit on the floor. Reading and reacting as units, especially defensively, will be the driver to overall success.
