Game Thread: Fla ST v Lady Vols, Wed Dec 4th; Home-FCC; 7:15 PM; SEC+ network: TN wins 79-77

You only get in GAME shape by playing games. Before tip tonight, we only played five games. We played one of the fastest teams in the country who was on their tenth game.
And their 4th in 7 days. I could def be wrong, but it's hard for me to see how that makes them less tired and us more tired after a week off.. Aren't tired legs on a basketball team usually a Feb thing?

For me it's not a matter of understanding. It just doesn't seem more worth all the effort than just taking and making good shots in the first place. Breaking your back to cover for a problem you created.

I'm afraid this is true, and I'd include Sara on the cut mins list in favor of Latham as well.
It is too bad you couldn't enjoy the first half in which we played the system and got up by 20 points on a high quality team. The 2nd quarter was one of the most enjoyable ones that I have seen in ages. I can't imagine why a Lady Fan would not enjoy seeing such tremendous effort parlay into such wonder results, creating deer in the headlight looks from the other team. It reminded me of when we used to beat the other teams into submission with some of Pat's best teams. A thrill to see this again.

i noticed that as well.. i girls look worn out and tired... and Florida State didnt.
This has been a lowkey issue in several games. Is all the running and pressing and marine corp practicing taking a toll already? Some say it will actually work them into "game shape" as the season progresses. But if they're tired now after a week off, what is Feb going to be like?

Nope, we watched two different games. Good teams do exactly what Tennessee did in the 2nd half and that’s recover from a drought to give themselves a chance to win in the 4th qtr.
It wasn’t fatigue. They had to adjust to a team that had momentum.
The ball started to bounce FSU way.
You don’t win the 4th qtr the way the Lady Vols did tonight if you were worn out and tired.
They extended the lead a few possessions two or three times before FSU got it back tied.
Again don’t know what was seen here but the conditioning is great. They said this on live TV. Fargas. Slay.
People that get paid big bucks.
CKC system is the future of the game. Plain and simple.
And regardless of the spinning, the fact that her team this early in the season finished the 4th qtr in this fashion is a credit to the outstanding job by the coaching staff and the strength & conditioning program.

Haven't listened to her presser tonight, but CKC has mentioned fatigue as a factor a couple of time previously this season.

Actually, Kim did change her way very quickly when needed tonight. And won that way, which was the most encouraging . She's smart enough to be versatile.
Yes, thank you, I’m well aware of what Kim did and how coaching won the game. Don’t deflect.

It's partly her issue, IMO. At least our late legendary Coach Pat Summitt thought it was partly hers, and she was a wise woman. Obviously Joan Cronan was the women's AD back then and was an amazing advocate in the community. But Pat was the absolute queen of fan interest. She was like a machine in her tirelessness in engaging fans and thanking fans and asking them to keep coming and to bring friends. I loved that about her.

NOT that a young coach/soon-to-be mother as busy as Kim Caldwell is has oodles of spare time to spend on fan growth at this point, but she MUST carve out at least a little. And really, even though we're not reading news features about it, I suspect she's doing more of that than we know.

Caldwell is new to the Bigtime herself, and has said a number of times that it's taking some getting used to. I'm all for giving her a year or two to really establish her footing on the sidelines before expecting her to be super great at fan growth. She's got a terrific personality so I know she'll get there.

Her best fan-growth tactic will be winning, and so far at least, she's on the right track!

If the coaches put a winning product on the field/court/diamond and recruit at a high level. the fans will show out and Barnes and Heupel thank the fans for their support during post game interviews/pressers.

I’m not talking about a presser tonight or any other time.
Fargas and Slay during the live action and following the game raved about the pace of play and how Tennessee finished.
The team is in outstanding physical condition.
No player in WBB is at their peak performance at this point in the season.
Talaysia Cooper scored 22 points in 24 minutes.
Lazaria Spearman made an outstanding fadaway jumper in the final seconds.
They finished strong.
It’s the bottom line.

Missed shots, turnovers, constant whistles, no flow, clanged 3s. Of course the result was good in the second qtr, esp when we got hot fm 3 for a sec. I knew we wouldn't stay that hot and they wouldn't stay that cold. I enjoyed the flow and energy much more in the 4th qtr. Felt more like high quality back and forth competition.

Has anyone ever heard Coach Kim encourage the fans to show up to a game? I really think she is missing the boat on that aspect.

I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but until people watch other games of WBB teams and I’m talking about all of the P4 conferences including every team in the country you all won’t truly be able to appreciate the fanbase at Tennessee for WBB.
Out of every televised WBB tonight the crowd in Tennessee was by far the best.
I don’t know what is expected to be honest but the crowds are really good. Tonight the crowd was good. I don’t see where she needs to encourage fans to come to games to me it’s an insult to complain about getting some of the best crowds this early in the season in WBB.

Boy that's the truth. They may pack in the WBB fans in the Midwest, but it's still football season in the south. Other arenas literally have a couple of hundred scattered around. LVs have done very well to retain what they routinely get. Crowd tonight looked much better, about average for this time of year. It will build, esp as wins come.

I was impressed that the team did not give in and they didn’t give up. They kept fighting though Fla. State seemed to have broken the ladies down. This team has a lot of heart. I was proud to see them hold on and win. Let’s hope they learned a few things and will be ready for Iowa on Saturday. Go Lady Vols!!
