Game Thread: Lady Vols 108 - Carson-Newman 63 (Exhibition)

Just got back from the game and from the brutal 2023 recruiting season from which I was in hibernation as I had nothing positive to say.
So glad we can now focus on our 2022-2023 season. My observations echo many others and aren't meant to be predictors for the season with this extremely small sample size.
--Horston has never looked better even against other relatively weak teams. She was so dialed in and fluid!
--Suarez was the surprise. She is such better shape and was also in the zone. Now she has the skills and athleticism to back up her swag.
--Jackson was great as expected. Loved that she is so good at using the fade away shot.
--Walker looks like she is demanding to be a starter with her grit and effort. 6 rebouonds!!
--Of the Sophomores outside of Suarez, Pucket looked the most transformed in the shape she is in and her also being in the flow of the game rather than inn her head. Her shot is so beautiful when she is relaxed.
--Pissott also has a beautiful shot with loads of potential.
--Defense is a concern but this is likely due to it being an exhibition game with so many player combos.

after watching lsu against their exhibition team, and us against carson newman that isn’t true. i feel like we’re definitely more progressed than lsu.
I think so to

LSU may eventually end up being great but the chemistry isn’t there. TN is so much more cohesive and far along at this point.

LSU may be more talented this year but losing 4 starters is a lot to over come for any program. At this point they look more like a group of individuals than a actual team. Get back to me in mid January with them, until then nothing can be made of them because of the trash schedule

Rickey and Jordan are going to be hard to stop and great on defense also ! Suarez is a pleasant surprise! She will be hard not to have her on the floor ….. Powell is the PG we have been needing ! The two P’s are going to give us more fire power from three ….. Pucket (buckets) and Pissott …. Let’s get ready for Ohio !
Sara said powell was like a great passing guard she played with in aau ball.

The haters have arrived . Our offense looks top notch and that’s something the rest of the country does not want to see. Expect a lot of discrediting comments between now and the next game from outside fans. They do not want us to be a threat and they know we truly are . #GLV

LSU more talented than us? Or than themselves last year? I think they could be better than last years team but the prima donnas will destroy chemistry. That team has a lot including their coach . Reese , Flauje I pray stay on the same page. Flauje , Velez , Williams and ADR will be Fire works . Mulkey will def earn her shimmery jacket next season .

I meant more talented than the team they fielded last year.

But talent does not always equal better results. Chemistry is crucial

This game was worth the wait. Our top scorers were: Horston 17 ( looked great), Sara 15 (3 of 5 from 3 land), Rickea 14 (just getting started), and Marta 14 (on 71.4% shooting). Quite impressive considering no one played more than 17 minutes.

Powell (2 of 3 from 3) and Justine (3 of 6 from 3), scored 9 points each. We had 7 players score from 3 point land, impressive. Nice to see Edie got her first 3, too. Key scored 8 on 80% shooting.

Franklin got 10 rebounds (the Ball Hawk), and Walker got 6.

We have a Lot to look forward to.

GO LADY VOLS!!!

One thing I’d seen is TK gotta control those elbows or she’s gonna get thrown out with some flagrants this year. She caught some Carson Newman girls in the throat a couple of times.

One thing we know about Kellie is she will get the defense in order--I'm not worried about that. But for us to be this much of a threat offensively is something we haven't seen in years! Our score against CN in the 2020 exhibition was 70-44, quite a difference!

I just got back also and you pretty much nailed it. I coulda cried several times, starting with just seeing RJ in an LV uni. Someone said the other day if you factory ordered the perfect basketball body you'd get Rickea. So smooth, so fluid, a much more reliable scorer than anyone we've had in a long, long time. Her presence so frees JH of pressure and allows her to do the many things she does well. They will indeed be the combo that keeps SEC coaches up at night.

I've been suspecting we might see more of Jordan Walker than many thought. KJH loves and trusts her. As with JH and RJ, the presence of Powell frees Jo to do what she does so well, get to the basket, rebound (!) play great D. I was very impressed with Powell, sees the floor well, an excellent passer. She was a such a crucial portal get. We are set at PG!

Wanted to cry again when Pissot started draining the 3s. She is as advertised as a shooter, but her D needs lots and lots of work. I believe I did shed a few over Puckett. As I thought last year, she is a player. Will be All SEC before she leaves here.

Marta was the pleasant surprise. She is aggressive and looking to score, and can really shoot. She will get mins.

I was a little disappointed in Franklin and Hollingshead, didn't realize Franklin had 10 rebounds! Both looked a little rusty and Franklin seemed a little slow. I thought Jillian settled in much better later in the game and still think she will be a huge contributor this year and a star the next few years. Franklin will come around also I'm sure.

KJH wants to play Tess, but I'm just not sure its going to work out that way. IMO, Striplin, Wynn, and Miles are going to struggle for mins.

I actually thought the crowd was decent for a scrimmage on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It occurred to me that the new players had probably never played in front of that many people.

This year is going to be fun for everyone. Not saying we'll win em all, but I'm pretty sure we'll be competitve in all.

A lot of good game analyses but also too much propaganda. I don’t see why folks just can’t enjoy what has been built by this TN coaching staff. No matter how it’s broken down there’s too much hype about teams like LSU and Texas on this message board right now.
Based on the exhibition contests, TN is a top 3 team in the country right there with SCarolina & Stanford and LSU is not. LSU played Mississippi College and that team just wasn’t the caliber of opponent TN faced today.
Harper has the roster to put the best five players on the floor no matter the competition.. Horston is a flat out baller and she has swagger. But on any given night Horston might not even be TN’s best player. Jackson is as physically/athletically a good looking player that I’ve seen in college basketball. She deserves to play on a great team and being in MS State didn’t do her justice. The defense goes as Tamari Key & Jordan Walker go. If I’m Harper that is who I push to become dominant on the defensive end of the court. SCarolina has that in Beal.

Now back to this senseless TN vs LSU comparison, recruiting rankings is clouding people judgement. TN is as talented and explosive as ever w/ both experience & youth. Hollingshead is more skilled (not a finished product as a soph) than any player on LSUs roster now or incoming recruit. Hollingshead was a HS all-American.
TN is ahead of LSU and what Hollingshead brings puts them on pace to contend with SCarolina.
K. Wynn is the x-factor in terms of TN’s program taking the next step.
She came in as a raw prospect but anyone with a basketball mind understands that physically she can GO! Wynn has the size and talent to be a two way player in the SEC. The shooting still needs a lot of work.. but athletically she can guard anyone in the SEC at the G position.
Height you can’t teach and the shooting ability of Marta and Pissott gives TN something that UConn & Stanford has used to build great offensive systems to contend year in and year out. Before that everyone knows Pat Summitt and TN was the elite basketball program. Today was a step in the direction of greatness..

One exhibition game u already comparing big time. Give them 10 games to play together.
I think its foolish to compare exhibitions. These are essentially glorified scrimmages letting everyones rosters the chance to play. Coaches are trying to practice certain schemes, play different combinations and trying things they won't be afforded to do with luxury during the regular season (most the time).

No one is playing their full strength lineups mostly during these things anyways. When the regular season starts and we start seeing the your regular lineups and playing against quality teams, then you can begin to digest what your really have or don't have.

Something to think about 4 players we figure to play major roles in this years team didn't play full seasons last year.

Jillian Hollingshead was a freshman still recovering from her ACL injury and only played in 20 games on minute restrictions.

Jasmine Franklin hasn't played since December due to her injury.

Rickea and Jasmine Powell haven't played since January because of transferring.

There will be some rust with these players. Some more than others because of different circumstances but all 4 once they get going will make a difference.

Nice post 98.....

It is obvious to anyone with eyes that this team is offensively loaded and once they get a few games under their shorts, they are going to be a major terror and will reek havoc on whomever they play.

Just a matter of minutes.

Just a matter of minutes.

It will be a matter of minutes for this group, even before SEC play.
Won't be able to experiment early on like we did last year.
Not with our opening gigs
1-Ohio St (pre-season AP #14) (Massey rating:#17)
2-Umass (Massey rating:#84)
3-Indiana (pre-season AP #11) (Massey rating:#9)
4-Rutgers (Massey rating:#67)
5-Paradise Island
6-Paradise Island
*TN is (pre-season AP #5) (Massey rating:#18)

Our "cupcakes" games will have to wait, the entre' s are up first

My take

We looked great, everyone got a chance to shine. Defense wasn’t very tight but that’s frequently intentional in games like this. Is a kind gesture to the lower team to allow them to run their sets and practice against a really talented team. We could have really gotten after them and made it ugly, but there was no reason for that.

We are deep, we are strong and we are faster than last season. Jackson and Horston are peas and carrots. Love them together.

Puckett and Suarez have both improved physically and mentally. Two excellent players. Loved seeing Marta take charge and set the offense at the end of the first quarter. Puckett has the most beautiful stroke on the team, ball hardly touched the rim all night, she’s just smooth.

Pissott is as advertised and will compete with Tess for minutes I believe. I think Tess will shoot far better than she did in the exhibition. Justine has a smoothness and confidence out there we have been missing though. I think she’s going to do great things in her career.

Franklin appears to be working back still, definitely not as explosive as she was pre-injury at this point. I suspect the same of Miles and Striplin. Nothing was mentioned, but they both seem like they may have had minor injuries/setbacks over the summer. Striplin in particular does not look like she was able to do the same conditioning as the others.

Very excited to get the real season started!!!
