Game Thread Lady Vols at LSU

A couple of points that I feel hurt our chances of winning!
Davis got her third foul at 4:17 of the third quarter and her fourth 19 seconds later...she was on the bench for nine to ten minutes and did not get another shot up until 5:07 of the fourth quarter and she missed it anyway! The game was getting out of hand by then anyway!!!

Jamie made six of our first eight points in the first 3:14 of the game! Then disappeared and went one for six and did not score again until 4:24 left in the game. She had nine points and four boards, but was without a field goal for 32 minutes and 22 seconds?

Mercedes did her usual disappearing act in the second half. Her last field goal was at 2:52 of the third quarter and one shot in the fourth quarter??? Our best player scores one point in the fourth quarter!

I think Davis is the key player for us in the rest of this season! Mercedes is going to get double or triple teamed and Jamie is going to be Jamie??? The points from Evina and MeMe will be hit or miss. JMO
But if Davis keeps coming like the last couple of games.... we just might get further than most expect!
With the focus on the seniors... she can make a difference. Evina will come on and improve but I think next year for her unless she realizes just how good she is??? JMO

"I think Davis is the key player for us in the rest of this season!". No, Holly is the key player for us, she needs to resign! Just kidding, you made some good points.

I agree! Evina, Rennia, and Annie Haynes needs to be told to score! If teams are going to double and triple Mercedes we can't continue to try to force it into her (which we still seem to be trying to do).

She is getting mauled and we still try to make the entry pass. For us to be successful in the SEC tournament and possibly shock some folk and return to the final for the 3 freshman I mentioned have to score. They showed they could score (I know it was in high school but they have also showed in spurts this season) We now need them to do that more often.

If Annie or Evina gets hot it's going to force their defenders to have to guard them and that's one less player to sag on Mercedes. They sag on her because Evina, Annie, (and sometimes Davis) do not look to score.

I don't know if they feel they can because it is Jaime and Mercedes team and they want them to get theirs but at some point you have to takeover if you're tired of losing.

That will work provided we hit the boards and get some putbacks on misses. Like Pat used to say ‘rebounding is desire’. You can be off shooting but defense and rebounding are under your control.

We have seen this same let down for the last five years, when will we get real and realize it is not all on the players? Nearly every year we are excited about this player and that player and the potential of the team to only end up with our hopes dashed into the abyss. Bad history repeats itself when you have the same old leadership doing the same old thing. The real scapegoat has to be the head of the snake. I really think we need fresh blood with a total different perspective. I think Holly has taken us as far as she can.

I disagree, CHW can and will take this deeper into the abyss. Just give her time.

The problem with the LSU game comes down to the fact we were getting stops but they were getting the rebounds and second chance points. They had something like 18 points that we should have secured the rebound and stopped the possession.
Terrible shooting game for us still we have a chance to win if we rebound.

Even bad teams are going to beat you if you give them more shots and let them score 20 second-chance points like LSU did Sunday. The LVs have been spotting teams third- and fourth-chance points, too. They've gotten less aggressive and confident as the season has gone on. They're going to have to get back to being a physical team that rebounds and finds outside shots to beat some of the tough teams coming up.

If you notice the last few game our offense is becoming offensive again in a bad way. Teams know what we want to do take it away most of the game and no one can step up and make them pay. 4 for 18 from the three in the LSU game. 38 percent from the field. Only 14 turnovers but 23 offensive rebounds by the other team. If you can't shoot better be able to rebound. We lose to an unranked team a loss that will probably knock us out of home court advantage in the first two rounds of the NCAA unless we win most of the games we have left something like 6 and 2 minimum and it may take 7 and 1 to get home court.

THAT has been a major problem for the LVs of the last few seasons. If they consistent outside shooting, a lot of their problems disappear. But when teams know, that the LVs are only going to score by forcing into MR and driving the lane, they can jam the system. If the LVs can out on the break, that shortcoming is not as relevant. However, when an opponent is scoring or controlling the boards (LSU) and forces the LVs into a half court offense, it can get ugly fast.

Jamie's outside shot has disappeared. And Westbrook and Meme are not consistent. I know Dunbar but her defensive liabilities and her lack of mobility (she does not move that much around the perimeter to open) make it tough to keep her on the floor for extended minutes.

I am mystified that the LVs have not been able to recruit some sharp shooters. Here, the loss of Middleton is starring to loom larger.

It's like they think they are better than they really are. Sick of getting up 12 and knowing the lead will disappear.

That is something I have thought they suffer from for several years now. They think it is them that have won all those championship games. :banghead2:

More like, they think they're not as good as they are.

When teams experience a "Here we go again" syndrome like what is happening, it is fully mental and has to be handled at that moment....If they don't turn the tide from the floor, it has to happen from the bench.

This team can put points up in a blink. But no matter how great the team's composition and talent,,,they still need direction and directing.

In-game adjustments; time outs to stop runs or to regain composure; timeouts to get in the team's face and bring them back to reality. Using timeouts after the damage is done is killing the confidence of this team.

Exactly.

Davis is the key. Give her the green light. Let her shoot twenty a game.

I feel like Davis is the most naturally gifted player on the team, and if she's ever hired to play professionally will -- if she stays healthy -- have the longest pro career.

Davis seems to be stuck in low gear and is better than almost anyone else even playing that way. If we ever see her go into first she will be one of the top five players in the SEC. I suspect it may take her junior season until then about 11 ppg and 8 rpg. I think she is capable of 22 ppg and 15 rpg when she decides to turn up the energy.
