We are capable of playing strong defense--but then a game later we'll stand around and be terrible. Good teams are consistently good. That's not been us. I thought we'd turned the corner after the SC game--wrong. I don't think we will turn the corner--but for now, after a great performance tonight, we can hope.
I gave up in the turn the corner thing a while back.
This team can play lethargically and on nights when they are not shooting well, that tendency gets compounded.
I posted earlier that for all the talent talk, this team only has two players who are naturally quick enough to play at the SEC level at a high level of minutes--Diamond and Meme. Everyone else (including Nared who often has to cover smaller players, crash boards, and hustle back on defense) is almost always in the red zone. That is why I keep saying Te'a is a big loss; not because she would have necessarily been an AA-caliber PG but she would have been another physically gifted athlete that could provide some spark when Jordan and Jamie were running low.
When I predicted the win over MSU, I was betting that this team was actually conserving energy (though not in planned conscious was) knowing in the back of their minds, that MSU was their end game. Is that how they should be approaching games. No, not an ideal world but they maybe making some concessions to real limitations.
[Should the coaching staff have found a way to be compensate for these short falls. YES, though the options are pretty limited]
When the LVS shoot well like tonight, they do not have to chase back on transition defense as often and instead can set their defense, which helps them out immensely, particularly when AM is on the floor.
I don't expect this team to go that far in the SEC tournament given its game timeline; two wins and out I would bet. However, I think they can make a good run in the NCAA. A return to the elite 8 is within in their grasp, even with a low seed. If they get a break on the brackets, may even a Final, well I dare not say it.....
