For some reason Tennessee almost always gets an opponents best game, whether it's one of their good players putting up career high numbers or a bench warmer throwing up perimeter bombs which almost always go in. I just hope this isnt one of those games where USC's amazing talent all bring their A game all at once. Can you imagine Coates, Davis, Gray and Wilson all firing on all cylinders at the same time? I dont expect Tennessee to get a big early lead like the other games, but they need to play hard all four quarters and not just a couple quarters if they have any hope of winning this game..
During the SEC slate over the past 8 games, USC has had five Gamecocks averaging in double-digits in points per game. Of course, Wilson has only played 6 of those 8 gms, sitting out of two games with a sore ankle. She's returned for the last 3 SEC gms and has averaged 17 ppg - in fact in the 6 gms she's played, she's averaged 17.6 ppg, 9.3 rpg, and 2.0 bpg to lead the team.
Alisha Gray has stepped up her production once SEC play began, averaging 13.9 ppg and 5.0 rpg in 8 gms. She has averaged 16.5 ppg in the last 6 gms, and she's shooting a solid 44% (12-27) in 3-pt. FGs versus conference opponents.
Alaina Coates had an interesting stat line in the Gamecocks' last game versus UGA, with 1 pt, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 steals. She was blanketed, double and triple-teamed by UGA's bigs, but was still able to contribute. In 8 SEC gms, Coates has averaged 12.4 ppg and 11.5 rpg.
One Coaching move that Coach Staley has made that seems to be working, is replacing Bianca Cuevas-Moore with Tyasha Harris in the starting lineup at PG. Harris seems to be more of a settling presence distributing the ball, while Cuevas-Moore has blossomed as a scoring option off the bench. In 8 SEC games, Cuevas-Moore has averaged 11.0 ppg while shooting 13-26 (50%) from behind the arc - over the past 6 gms, she's averaged 13.2 ppg.
Kaela Davis has been the one Gamecock who seems to be slumping once SEC play began. She still has averaged 10.6 ppg in the 8 SEC gms she's played, but has only scored 38 points (7.6 ppg) over the last 5 games.
Still, one has to think the game against Tennessee is one that may inspire her to elevate her game: the reported relationship between her and UT's Diamond DeShields, as well as the fact that once upon a time, Davis was a verbal commitment to the Lady Vols. Not wanting to scratch open old wounds, but I seem to recall when South Carolina ventured into TBA in February 2nd, 2012 and stole their very first win versus UT in Knoxville. Then - whether a coincidence or not, I'll never know - the next day (Feb. 3rd), Davis de-committed from Coach Summitt and the Lady Vols.
One probably had nothing at all to do with the other, but the timelines seem to be coming to full circle for Monday's game, as it's the first chance Davis will face UT as a Gamecock...
