Game Thread Lady Vols at West Virginia

My wife and I watched West Virginia’s last game today and we both thought that West Virginia has the better players (outside of Davis) right now. Curious to see how this goes, but WVU by 8 points at home.

I did the same thing. It should be a great game. I believe two evenly matched teams.

They have one really excellent guard and Martinez inside. Other than those two the other players are competent but not really scary good. I think overall were the better team especially if we play our best five a lot more than we've been playing them. I expect to win the game. I would say W Va would probably be a middle of the league SEC team.
Middle of the league right now for Tennessee also

This topic came up a lot last season. When a coach plays a platoon style, who starts matter less than who finishes.

It is possible that the coaching staff has decided at least for now, to treat Horston as last year's Burrell. The spark off the bench who has a little time to read the game and settle down before jumping into the action. That is not a bad idea to have some who can change a game coming off the bench.

Keyen Green is starting I presume because she is perceived as a team leader and is very experienced. Jordan Walker the same. Marta is mature beyond her years and seems very calm and poised. Starting Burrell and Davis needs no explanation.

It may be that Kellie is hoping that this opening line-up will start a game in the right way, playing with composure and defensive intensity. That has not quite worked out yet because of high TOs in the opening quarter. However, I am not sure anyone on the bench would be likely to greatly improve on that.

But to your concern, if Green gets overmatched, it easy enough to make a quick sub for KK or Key. The starting fives does not lock the LVs into a loss or a win. Green could start but 35 minutes of game time could go to KK or Key if they are getting the job done.

And as we saw with Rennia in the ETSU game, line-ups and player rotation plans can get quickly exploded by early foul calls.
You have some good points but in my view you can not have a great team unless you start the same 5 that can grow some chemistry in playing together .That did not happen last year because of " platoon " type ball.It would be great to play platoon ball if both platoon ( Vols )teams played together ,press the ball full court, turn over the other team consistently ,tire them out ,match up with both teams ,etc.I saw nothing like that last year and so far this year.Maybe playing everyone on the bench will work out ....I doubt it but have some hope it will do so.

Just to clarify, I was not necessarily advocating for going 12 deep--and if Darby had been healthy likely 13--as has been the case so far this season. My main point is that fans sometimes get too hung up on who starts.

Starting "the same five" every game and going deep into the bench (platoon ball) are not mutually exclusive, so I assume you mean shortening the bench to build chemistry .

I agree that a tighter rotation helps to build chemistry. However, it really can't be 5 players because of fouls and injuries. Most coaches think in terms of playing a core rotation of 7 to 8 players. The core players get the majority of the minutes and the others get their time against over matched teams or in blow-out garbage time.

If we take the current starting 5 as a given, that leaves Horston, KK, Key, Salary, Darby, Rennie, McCoy, and Saunders to fit into 2 to 3 slots if we shrink the bench to a core 7 or 8. So, who gets left out?

On this fan board, there is a lot of expressed love for shortening the bench unless their favorite player is not part of that core--then it is, why isn't X playing; free X; this is terrible that X never gets a shot and so on.

In reality, DI is not youth league and not everyone is guaranteed playing time but I sense that Harper believes (like many coaches) that you get better buy-in and better team chemistry if everyone knows that can earn game time by working hard and doing all the right things. This approach can be a doubled edged sword in recruiting; if you come here and work hard you will play but you may not get the kind of minutes you are accustomed too as a HS star.

Giving Darby the benefit of the doubt, I expect that 10 players on the current roster will become the core.

They have showed glimpses of their half court press. We may see more of it tomorrow. Offense is getting better. I already see similarities in how the ball is advanced to when the 3 Meeks were here. We have the athletes to play that type of ball. Just need to get better on defense stopping the ball. Tomorrow will tell us a lot about that as well.

I think looking at both rosters objectively, most would take Tennessee's. As I said before, it will come down to coaching. It would be a solid road win, and these are the games Kellie needs to start proving she can win...
Holy crap Darth that is the second time in the last week you said something I didn't read as negative. U keep this up you will hurt your rep. I Like It and I'm not being sarcastic. Positivity rules. Just don't look at any of my posts in the ff forum....

And get 3 seconds called for yet another turnover. SMH

Now that would take away from the drama of the movie....Three seconds, Four seconds, it's all in the screenplay.

I met the guy that played Jimmy Chitwood, (Maris Valainis) out in Viejo California at a golf course....He was giving golf lessons.... I went with a pal for his golf lesson and, low and behold, Jimmy Chitwood was the pro teaching that day...He was a real humble guy, very much like the character he played in Hoosiers.

Lady Vols will win but it will be close like 82-75
I agree! The LadyVols WILL WIN tomorrow. Not just on intuition, but this relies solely on Rennia finally understanding the LadyVol culture. Quote me on this!

I think the opposite. Tennessee's strength is their perimeter players. WV will play Davis, Burrell and Horston tightly. WV has enough size inside that they don't need to double team the Tennessee post players, who are largely afterthoughts on offense anyway.
Can't Kellie find a jugs machine to shoot roundy balls at Tamari and KK?

Most of the time a team could shoot 70 percent and probably win without winning the key categories.
Yeah how often does a team shoot 70%. Seems you are just looking for an argument. Won't be me! I never win an argument with a woman!:)

I hope we come out to play in a consistent style today. If we are to lose I hope it is not because of turnovers, missed foul shots, or poor decisions. Of course teams usually win that prevent all three. Our first game this season against a top 50 team we can win because have better talent than they do just have to make it happen.
