Nice win. Middle of the lineup came through. Auburn killed themselves giving up all those walks. The field looked terrible, wasn't it covered? It seemed like a long game.

Have not read comments above me but a good win. I might add that in light of some of the plate umpires we have seen in the past I do believe this was the worse one ever. He would not give Aucoin the base when she was hit and clearly did not stick our her arm ( as all of the bama and gators do). Piss poor strike zone for both teams!!!
Hitters did not know it and the pitchers did not either.
lexi has go to knock those low pitches down some way if want to win this next one and catch Awbarm while they are down. By the way I like this lineup, as I said a few weeks back Gaffin needs to be in the outfield and McSwain needs to hit.

The strike zone was so small that both team's pitchers had to try and throw the ball through a snuff can! I don't know where they get these umps but this guy was beyond bad...Seemed like the conductor on the CSX train was watching...and blew the whistle when a strike was finally called! lol

Rule states that the batter doesn't have to move if the pitch is in the batter's box. While she did not extend it, her arm was out of the box in her stance. That's why she had stay put. Multiple replays showed that her arms were out of the box in the stance.

And as long as the zone was consistent for both teams, then the players have to adjust. Plain and simple. Just because you would call them strikes, tonight's umpire will call them strikes, doesn't matter.

Thanks you for clearing that up about as well as muddy water. The replays I saw did not show her arm out of the box but maybe my eyes are much older than yours and every umpire should have the same strike zone that is shown in the rule book whether consistent or not. Plain and simple!

Let's not complain about umpiring when that and our plate discipline played a huge role in this big win. Let's win this second game--it's huge, too.

As the Aucoin call after getting hit, I'm ok with the umps cracking down on this habit of hitters sticking their arms out over the plate and doing little to avoid getting hit, as other teams are notorious for doing it--but it's a rule that they need to start enforcing.

Could not agree more, however when any batter is hit standing in the box the rule states that they are to go to first base. It matters not baseball or softball. I know early in the year all teams were doing sticking out the elbow cover. Maybe they should not allow the cover to dissuade the elbow pluck. I surmise that Aucoin was hit above the pad and was in the batter box. No problems on my end at all. The plate discipline was as good or better than all year. Aggressive and swinging at strikes!

Auburn is a mentally very tough team. TN better bring it in game two or AU just might turn the tables.

TN will finish no worse than 5th if they can win 3 of their remaining 5 conference games. I was hoping Missouri would lose one on the road at MSU but so far that has not happened.

That is incorrect. The rule states that the entire ball is in the batter's box when it hits the batter. Not just that it "hits the batter standing in the box". Meaning, if the batter is crowding the plate (which she was) and her arms are outside the box (which they were), and the ball is not entirely in the box (which it wasn't) then they are not awarded first base.

And in baseball, the batter has to attempt to get out of the way, while in softball they don't. But the entire ball is still applied.

Clarification: if the ball is entirely in the box, the batter doesn't have to attempt to get out of the way. If it is not, then the batter does. So, the umpire judged that the ball was not entirely in the box, therefore she has to attempt to get out of the way, and she didn't, so she stays at bat.
