Game Thread Lady Vols versus USA scrimmage, Nov 5, 6PM, Food City/Thompson Boling Arena

You cannot judge this game as to how the Lady Vols will do during the season. Several of our players who played tonight will not see the light of day against the LSU's, USC's and NDs. Quit talking about who did bad they were playing against pros. I doubt if what we saw tonight will be anywhere close to the line ups KJH put up against good college competition.
Very true.

But we can assume everything after a D2 Carson Newman exhibition hmmm… I actually agree with u but people here well I won’t say

Edie reminds me of John Stockton with her fearless play. She didn't hesitate to set picks against bigs (including, I believe, Griner) and didn't appear at all intimidated by the ball pressure. Nice stat line for a walk-on, too. Loved watching her penetrate and kick out for an assist. Maybe it was just because it was late in the game, but I could swear that the energy picked up on offense and that the spacing, cutting, screening, and passing got better (with the exception of a couple of turnovers...not on Edie...that resulted in eady USA layups).

Really glad to see Kaiya's improvement. She could have hit the portal to look for greener pastures but instead has stayed the course and put in the work. Her commitment is paying off.

All the ladies had good moments that can only help their confidence and help them grow. Really enjoyable game, even if we did only get to watch the second half due to the v-ball overrun.

I’m not seeing uncomfortable at all. She’s getting pressured well and dribbling out of it fine. I thought shes played good tonight
I should have stated, Griner looks uncomfortable. Not Wells.

One thing I love about the true fans is this,” we clearly set the tone of the message board this season and aren’t letting up.”

Facts are facts. Tennessee won the off-season and now the real work starts. The portal was very good to the LVs.

If the AmeriCup tourney taught folks anything it’s that pro vs college athletes is two different levels.
An AmeriCup USA team of what many consider the best in college and Rickea was the best on that team and showed last night she is a pro against the Nat’l USA Team that is on another level from the AmeriCup field.

Think about it, Brazil beat USA AmeriCup team by 15 points and scored 94 points the first meeting.

Could that Brazil team keep it close with the Nat’l USA team the LVs played last night?

The answer is a resounding “no”. That professional Brazil team would’ve got beat by 20 or 30 points.

And again, both times Rickea J played and competed at a high level against the worlds best.

Now she has elite PG Destinee Wells, elite G Jewel Spear, and TN native Avery Strickland along with a much improved returning core from top to bottom.
Let’s Rock on Rocky Top.
That’s context. GBO🍊

I know most won’t agree with me but I think Wynn is our most improved player. She had the speed to keep up with the pros tonight. I thought she looked sharp.
I'll agree with you!! I am very excited and impressed with Kaiya in the two exhibition games!! We saw her growth and development really beginning to shine at the end of last season, and it is apparent that she worked hard in the off-season. She is athletic and smart; her free throw shooting is spot on, and she knows how to draw fouls from her opponent - we're going to see her on the court a lot this year!

Everyone was scrappy as hell, no one quit or backed down. If they did have "fun" that's great. Not sure anything of any value happened in the game and I still wish we hadn't done it.

One thing of value actually did happen and that was Rickea showed she can create and score on that competition. Wish she'd shot at her usual efficiency and scored 20. I thought she also played some really good one on one D. Easy to see she's an W quality player and we're lucky to get to watch her against mere mortal college players. But dang, I'm super concerned about her right knee again. Did they mention it on TV? She got treatment whenever she was out and did not warm up w the team to start the second half. This is the third time I've seen this and it's an effing terrifying development. The nightmare.

The USA players really showed RJ alot of respect after the game, gathering around w hugs and words. They know they'll be seeing her soon enough.

I said last week our guards would be overwhelmed and indeed they were. All of them, individually and collectively. JP got 7 rebs just off Jordan Walker style hustle and that was nice. I thought Strickland was aggresive and unafraid. But they were lucky to get a pass off, much less run a play. Not sure how any of them benefited except to be relieved the next opponent won't be them.

Jewel seemed uncomfortable, much like she was in Mexico. But I think she'll settle in, probably Tuesday night. I thought Sara and Jill had good moments and it's obvious those two are going to be major players this year.

Loved seeing TK get that block. However, as of now, she's still not quite ready.

Seeing DT drain 3s was nauseating. To my disappointment, she was never booed. I love Jackie Young. One of the main reasons I went was to see her in person.
Rickea would have had 20 had she played her normal minutes. We had to preserve some minutes on some girls with two real games upcoming.

Or if she had shot her normal super efficient %. She missed a few shots she usually makes, don't know if they were rushed or what. Of course it's a sign of her greatness that the 50% fg she shot is an off night for her.

Rickea's answer to the question about being slighted in pre season and pre draft projections was absolutely perfect. As were all the rest of her answers. The amount of growth in her from a year ago at this time is incredible. Also I thought Tess was outstanding, as she was at SEC media days.

The chemistry on this team seems miles ahead of last season. Let it Be!

One thing I "love" about some fans is they think the "tone" of a message board can be changed or argued against by endless righteous lectures and tut tuting. Or that any of it matters to the actual real life season in progress. If only we could skip all that middle school drama and just have actual content.

If you have an ESPN+ acct:
You don't have to have an ESPN+ account. just sign in to the ESPN app with your cable/streaming povider. If you get the SEC Network, you get SECN+.

Really??? 6-of the 10 players we just played were number 1 WNBA draft picks. A team full of seasoned pro's. This USA team will beat other countries national teams much worse than they beat Tennessee tonight and Kellie played all 12 players. Season opener is in two days. Ten of the 12 Lady vols scored and they out rebounded arguably the best team in the world and shot 39% from the 3 against them. There were plenty of positives but you will never see them if you only look for the negatives.
Wasn't looking for negative ....it just showed that way and I am well aware of who constitutes the USA team.Still did not see anything positive with Lady Vols play in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

definitely. court vision and speed. I will wish, ( Note: I am not the expert that many other boarders believe they are) that she chooses a 8 footer - used by Edie and many C-N players rather that getting to the rim and not being in adequate control to make the shot.

Loved the way we started last night, fearless, and with a 3 by Sara!

Last night, our 2 best 3 point shooters were Tess 2 for 2, and Avery 2 for 3. Avery plays with a lot of energy, I think we’re going to see a lot more from Avery this year and more.

About Tess, she was instrumental in a couple of cool plays last night. Tess is the one who slipped in and hit the ball out of Griner’s hands, then went back up court, got the pass, and made a 3. Later, Tess actually threw the ball at the back of one of the USA players, so she could get the ball back and continue. The announcers called it a heads up play. Was that our sweet Tess? 🙂

Last, but not least, it was great fun to see Tamari’s block!

GLV!!!

So here's my thoughts and please don't read them harshly:

Player grades:
Looked like they belonged out there - RJ
Mostly could hold their own - Jill, Spear, Powell
Showed potential to hold their own - Darby, Pucket, Key
Encountered a lot of learning opportunities - the rest

Takeaways:
We need to steal USA's transition offense (fast break and secondary break), that's how it's done.

We need to play D like they do, that's how it's done. Our players couldn't even look for scoring opportunities because the defense was consistently threatening the ball. Half of our players were trying to survive the next pass or dribble instead of stressing the defense. At least half of our players were clearly intimidated and overwhelmed by the pressure. Time to coach them up because there are answers available.

Our OOB plays have sucked for years. Please get new ones. This is the one and only thing Holly did well, pull her old stuff out of a file drawer.

If one thing befalls this team, it may be general niceness. All of these players seem like wonderful human beings. Problem is, I don't think you can win at the level that we want to without a certain edginess. I know you can't go out there and beat up on Team USA, but after RJ, Jill, and Spear get their minutes, next in line might need to be whoever brings the most tenacity, even if that ends up being Wynn.

I think there is potential for this team to be very, very good. This game was an incredible blessing because it brings everyone's issues to the surface while there is still time to correct or mitigate them.

Issues coming to the surface only matters, if they are addressed and fixed. I’ve seen some things, so hopefully they are worked on.
