Game Thread: Lady Vols vs. Carson-Newman (Exhibition),,,At 6:30 p.m. Monday (tonight) at Food City Center...formerly TBA

who we played won’t play the mins they got against team USA. we barely saw jackson and hollingshed tonight. don’t read too much into this game.
Take the orange glasses off. Everyone who got on the court played horrible defense, all had to chase from behind, could not at any time stop penetration, didn't play help defense. Pat is rolling over in her grave, horrible coaches team. This game tells a little t about this team as it does every year. National team will smoke UT.

I'm trying not to take too much away from this exhibition.

I do think this team has a really high ceiling offensively.

Defense has to better though. Ta'Niya Latson might hang 40 on this team if the defense isn't much better next Thursday.

I suspect UT will give Team USA a good game…..the rotation would have to shorten obviously, and I am not sure if CKH has that in mind though for a scrimmage, because in the long run it prob better suits her team to spread the minutes. UT’s top 8 can play well against USA though.

Rotation doesn't matter...there was not a player on the floor that played acceptable defense.

No question, Wells can ball. We already know Spears can also, so point well taken. Powell looks good also at the guard position, so that is a strong 3 player rotation at the 1 and 2 spots, no doubts from anyone I would imagine. Looks like RJ will play some 3, maybe a lot, she is almost unguardable at that spot and I have to say Jill is a legit top 3-4 post player in the SEC right now if my guess is correct.

Sara might have turned the corner from her soph slump, if so watch out imo, have always admired her game when she can knock down her shots. Strip is Strip, good teammate and solid contributor but the ”Key” is getting TK back close to 100%, UT is gonna need her in the big games esp on defense…..esp there

This might be a really big year at UT, I could see it if the defense tightens up, so many weapons on offense. I doubt you see much of Wynn or Ace in the big games, but I could be wrong, Wynn had a big night against CN but will KH play her much against top competition? Because that would make Powell, Spear or Wells sit at the least and I think those three will be staples on the court. Wells is really good and we know what Spears will do. CKH seems to have a soft spot for Tess, so she is likely a starter going fwd, not sure if that is the right move, she is improved but still not above average defensively (being generous) and if you review her offensive stats vs the good defensive teams it becomes a struggle to understand her minutes, but I may be just off here and missing something.

Several good points made in your points. I think if Destinee Wells plays like she did tonight on Sunday against Team USA then CKH needs to name her the starting PG. That’s not a knock on Jasmine Powell. She has gotten better. Jasmine just is competing for a starting spot with one of top PGs in WCB. As for Jewel Spear, I’m almost certain that the staff will bring her off the bench when she is cleared to play.
Tess will likely fill that position until Jewel gets some game action and finds her rhythm with this team. But I think Jewel is too good to come off the bench. If she can play then she needs to start. Puckett made all freshmen SEC two seasons ago. She had big time performances against top competition and early in her career led a dominant second half performance against Virginia Tech on the road to earn a victory. Powell and Tess off the bench would bring quality depth and leadership in key spots. Jillian and TK playing together will certainly add a strong post presence to this team on both ends of the court.
After the performance Jillian Hollingshead had in the SEC tourney against LSU where she dominated the 2nd half I know she’s a start in the making.
Between Tennessee, South Carolina, and LSU there is not a wide margin.

SC is the least experienced of the three you mentioned, by a wide wide margin. If you add up the starts from their top 5-8 players, it is minuscule compared to LSU and UT. Like several hundreds of games started for LSU and UT in experience vs maybe 4-5 starts total for SC…..huge difference.

Don't want to take too much fm this game, and Jewel was a huge missing piece. But JP, Sara and Jill sure looked good and sharp fm the get go. All three in great physical shape.

Obviously, Wells is the real deal. What a savvy distributor. I feel as good about our PG position as I have in about a decade. That said, they are both very small and that will bite us at times, probably like Sunday.

So high on Jill. She's just comfy and smooth. Great footwork and mobile. So thankful for her bc TK unfortunately still has quite a hill to climb. Great to see her back out there and I hope she keeps improving. But Jill is our post for now and can be elite. Strip was a little off tonight but we know she'll be a steady and versatile contributor.

Rickea seemed like she was going about half speed sometimes, but played some great one on one defense a few times. Oh did I just say great and defense in the same sentence about this game? Rickea could score in her sleep, in about 12 different ways. Pleasure to watch. She does seem to be having some nagging knee probs, got big devices strapped to both soon as she came out. Not fun to watch.

Strickland isn't ready, needs physical work. Truthfully, Edie is a better player right now. Edie is officially above mascot status now. I don't expect her to actually contribute, but she can play. Very smart, very court aware, and with some skills, was ripping one handed passes.

I just can't explain the lack of any interest in playing D. Blowbys galore. Failure to close on 3s. Stop me if you've heard this before. Good thing there are so many offensive weapons. Sunday should be really interesting.

Agree. Who doesn't love Wynn? And she has worked hard and she is better. But not better than Spears, Wells, and Powell. So except for special defensive spot play it will be hard to get her many mins. Strickland needs a yr of strenght and conditioning and experience in practice.

Good, this team will lose to LSU and South Carolina(twice), at Ole Miss, at Georgia and at Texas A&M. Will struggle to win 20 games.

Here we have a classic case of premature negavoling, fortunately there are treatments for this embarrassing condition.

The CN game is and always has been a glorified scrimmage. Going to back to the CPS days, the LVs are never locked in 100% or even 80%. I don't believe the coaching staff wants to destroy poor little CN 150 to 5.

There is very little diagnostic evidence from this game other than assessing some basics, like how a player is recovering from an injury.

The game against the US national team will be a better test but even then, preseason games tend generate a lot more noise and lot less useful data.

South Carolina returning players practiced against WNBA talent every day for the past few seasons.
They didn’t start or play a lot based on who was ahead of them on the depth chart.
It’s not a wide margin between Tennessee, South Carolina, and LSU.
Experience is a key factor, but we’ll see if it’s the deciding factor. I believe Tennessee has a roster this season built to contend against elite competition.
You can’t teach height. Tennessee and South Carolina have a lot of it and I think that’s where they separate from LSU. It hasn’t been a focus yet but from the exhibition it’s clear that LSU lacks size. Teams will try to limit LSU top rebounder. I don’t think the transfer numbers will hold in rebounds during SEC play.
She is atleast two inches shorter than her listed height.

Premature “negavoling” or ejacavoling?

Wynn had 3 turnovers in less than 20 minutes

Kaiya Wynn. I am so darn proud of her and how she is moving and carrying herself with so much more confidence and skill this year. And she's just getting started. Wynn easily could have given up and transferred out, but she stuck it out, obviously worked hard, and she looks great!

IMO she also very well could become that defensive stopper we need.

There were so many more positives it would take all night to type, so I'll just say this game made me very happy and got me even more excited about the season. And yes, I know "it was just Carson-Newman," but C-N, as always, is a well-coached team and they fight. They really are a great warm-up game for everyone to get some of the nerves out of the way.

Speaking of nerves, I suspect Ace Strickland was probably the most nervous player in the building. Can you imagine growing up in Knoxville going to Lady Vol games, dreaming of being a Lady Vol then not having that dream come true at first and then suddenly IT DOES and you finally walk out onto that court named "The Summitt," with a former HS teammate as an opponent, all your old friends and family in the stands, and NOT being a nervous wreck? lol

I look forward to watching her this season.

Jackson is Jackson -- fantastic. Puckett was great. Powell was great. Wells was great. Jillian shooting threes! Striplin's power underneath is going to be a problem for most opponents. Both Darbys -- yes! Tamari had moments when I know she must have been thinking, "I've still got it, by gawd!" What a joyous surprise it was to see her out there.

Fun game. I can't wait until Sunday! Obviously a team of professional players are likely to beat our amateurs, but I hope our team can at least give them a scare.

Only got to see bits of this game. Too busy to at any point even sit down, but did try to catch as much as I could. Missed all of first quarter and was surprised to see so much Darby in the second. She didn’t even sub out with the first wave. Defensively she looked atrocious. Blew by the opponents hezzy by 10 feet and just didn’t recover, kind of stopped. Team needs defense. Would even start Wynn over Darby at this point.

Will also say wow to the refereeing. Just finished watching the Vegas Aces beating up on teams whilst repeating as champs. Now to see these ridiculous touch fouls being called everywhere is infuriating. Is this what basketball is going to be?? If so, there is no way to stay with a player, better figure out how to play some help defense and fast!!!

Ace needs to be sitting most of this year with Talaysia. The good thing is she’s swift and willing. The defensive positioning is a biggg issue. Very reminiscent of Justine last year. But potential once she gets that down and settles down lol very anxious/nervous. It’ll come.

Kaiya is much improved and the odd man out imo is Tess. I get Kellie likes her but she’s not a starter but is solid in the second rotation group.
I’m playing Kaiya more minutes at the 1-3 positions because she’s needed both this year and next to produce at a high level for this team to be successful. She can get to the basket, create for others, and defend.. she could tip the scales in the long run.

Tess is gonna be Tess and do good things but nothing great. But she seemed more willing to move around this year and find her shot.

Edie has great potential and if she were 4 inches taller would be a BEAST. Love the mentality she has and his aggressive she is. Shoulda given her a scholly..

Wells is great and I hope she continues to look for her shot just as much as she sets up others. She dies both amazingly.

Powell’s defense is much much improved. She could be sec all defensive team if she plays with as much energy.

Rickea is amazing. That’s it and that’s all. Hope she has a healthy season. Definitely has tightened her handle and her shot is beautiful as always.

Jill was great. Definitely our best post currently. Long, versatile, and she rebounded well. She looked comfortable.

Sara looks absolutely amazing. An offseason with Rickea.

Karo struggled a bit imo, I wanna see her take the same leap the rest of the junior class seems to have taken and I’m sure had those threes fallen I would feel like she has so I’m not gonna be too down on her fr. Keep shooting.

Tamari; give her time but she showed flashes that reminded me of who she is. Patience.

With Jewel I’m just sayin.. could be a special team.

CN isn’t an elite P5 but it’s a great team probably better than a lot of P5 schools others have played in exhibition and definitely better than East Tabernacle Baptist that LSU played. Defense should’ve held them to 20 less points at least with the same scoring output from us and I’d have felt better but when you watch; Ace/Tess/Karo we’re getting beat causing rotation issues. Ace the larger culprit but that’s gotta get fixed… immediately.

PRESEASON TALK

  • The Lady Vols, who have finished third in the last four final SEC standings, are picked third behind LSU and South Carolina in the 2023-24 Coaches and Media Preseason Polls.
  • UT's Rickea Jackson was voted to both the Coaches and Media Preseason All-SEC First Teams. Wake Forest transfer Jewel Spear was picked to the second team by the coaches and media, while Tamari Key got a second-team nod from the coaches.
  • Rickea Jackson, a top-five finalist a year ago (and top 10 in 2020-21), was again named to the Cheryl Miller Award Preseason Watch List, while Tamari Key, a top-10 finisher in 2021-22, was again named to the Lisa Leslie Award Preseason Watch List. Jackson also earned Associated Press Preseason All-America Honorable Mention acclaim.
HEADING INTO 2023-24 WITH MOMENTUM
  • UT returns eight veterans from a squad that navigated growing pains and a brutal schedule to finish 25-12 overall (13-3 SEC, 3rd/NCAA Sweet 16) in 2022-23.
  • The Lady Vols are one of only seven programs advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 in each of the past two seasons.
  • Tennessee is the only school besides South Carolina to card top-three SEC finishes in each of the past four years.
  • Kellie Harper guided the Big Orange past LSU and into the 2023 SEC Tournament title game, marking the program's first appearance since 2015.
  • Top scorer Rickea Jackson (2023 Cheryl Miller Award Finalist) and UT's all-time blocks queen Tamari Key (2022 Lisa Leslie Award Finalist), both All-SEC players, return.
  • UT's transfer class is ranked No. 6 by 247Sports, via a No. 7 rating for Jewel Spear and a No. 19 spot for Destinee Wells.
  • ESPN has Spear and Wells slotted at No. 4 & No. 15, respectively, in its portal rankings, while The Athletic has them at No. 8 and No. 13.
SIX RETURN WITH STARTING EXPERIENCE
  • Tennessee welcomes back a veteran nucleus, with upperclassmen Tess Darby (35), Karoline Striplin (28), Rickea Jackson (24), Sara Puckett (15), Jasmine Powell (11) and Tamari Key (9) combining for 122 starts last season and amassing a total of 466 during their careers.
  • Key departed after nine games in 2022-23 due to blood clots in her lungs, but she returned to limited practice in June 2023 ahead of UT's European Tour. She practiced but did not play in two games vs. all-star teams.
  • Averaging 8.4 ppg. and 4.2 rpg., Key was UT's third-leading scorer and fourth-leading rebounder despite her condition last season.
  • Darby (7.4), Jillian Hollingshead (6.2 ppg., 36 games but zero starts) and the trio of Powell, Striplin and Puckett were next, all at 4.7 ppg. Powell distributed 3.1 apg.
DISPLAYING PORTAL POWER
  • Kellie Harper and her staff have recruited the transfer portal very successfully, and spring 2023 was no exception.
  • The Lady Vols added seniors Jewel Spear (Wake Forest) and Destinee Wells (Belmont), who each have a COVID year option they could use for 2024-25.
  • UT also welcomed sophomores Avery Strickland (Pitt) and Talaysia Cooper (South Carolina).
  • Spear (32), Wells (35) and Strickland (11), who are eligible to play this season, combined for 78 starts last season and bring 189 total career starting nods to UT.
  • Cooper, who made her transfer destination decision after the NCAA portal closed, is able to practice this season but must sit out the season due to that timing. Cooper played in 24 games last season for the Gamecocks.
  • Last year's transfer portal class including Rickea Jackson (Mississippi State), Jasmine Powell (Minnesota) and Jillian Hollingshead (Georgia). All three made immediate impacts a year ago, and Jackson was the SEC's third-leading scorer at 19.2 ppg.
FIVE ALL-CONFERENCE HONOREES
  • Tennessee has five players on its roster who have earned all-conference honors here or at their previous schools.
  • Forward Rickea Jackson is a three-time WBCA All-America Honorable Mention choice, two-time All-SEC & SEC All-Tournament honoree and 2023 Cheryl Miller Award finalist.
  • Center Tamari Key is a 2022 Lisa Leslie Award & Naismith Defensive Player of the Year finalist, All-SEC Second Team member & two-time SEC All-Defensive Team choice.
  • Guard Jewel Spear was a two-time All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament honoree during three seasons at Wake Forest.
  • Point guard Destinee Wells was a three-time first-team all-league pick (twice OVC, then MVC in 2022-23) at Belmont.
  • Guard Jasmine Powell was Coaches All-Big Ten Second Team at Minnesota in 2020-21.
ANOTHER CHALLENGING SCHEDULE
  • Tennessee played the most difficult itinerary in the country last season, per the final NCAA Toughest Schedule Report.
  • It looks as if the Lady Vols are leaning that way once again, with nine opponents ranked in the Associated Press and/or USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Coaches Preseason Polls.
  • The Lady Vols' slate includes No. 1/1 LSU, No. 6/4 South Carolina, No. 7/6 Ohio State, No. 9/9 Indiana, No. 10/10 Notre Dame, No. 12/16 Ole Miss, No. 18/22 Florida State, No. NR/23 Oklahoma and No. 25/RV Mississippi State.
  • UT is one of 11 athletics departments with its women's and men's basketball programs ranked in at least one of the preseason polls, with the Lady Vols standing at No. 11/12 and the Vols at No. 9/10.
  • Those schools are UConn, UCLA, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina, Baylor, Duke, USC, Creighton, Illinois and Miami.
A LOOK AT CARSON-NEWMAN
  • Carson-Newman, located in Jefferson City, Tenn., plays in the NCAA Div. II South Atlantic Conference.
  • The Lady Eagles finished the 2022-23 season with a 17-12 overall record and 12-6 record in league play.
  • C-N returns leading scorers in 5-5 graduate guard Braelyn Wykle and 5-8 junior guard Campbell Penland, who produced 20.8 and 12.5 ppg., respectively, last season.
  • Keeleigh Rogers, a 5-10 sophomore (6.3), and Penland (6.1) return as the team's top rebounders.
  • Wykle (75) and Penland (57) combined for 132 of the team's 200 three-pointers in 2022-23.
  • Also back are redshirt senior forward Lindsey Taylor, who averaged 10.0 ppg. in four contests before a season-ending injury, and 5-10 senior forward Skylar Boshears, who put up 8.8 ppg. in 29 starts.
ABOUT THE C-N HEAD COACH
  • The Lady Eagles are coached by Mike Mincey, who has a 240-109 record entering his 13th year at the school.
  • C-N has reached the NCAA Division II Tournament six times during his tenure, most recently in 2021-22.
  • Mincey has guided the Lady Eagles to five 20+ win seasons, including a 32-3 result in 2017-18 that ended with a trip to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
THE LAST TIME WE MET THE LADY EAGLES
  • Tennessee rolled to a 108-63 exhibition win against Carson-Newman in Knoxville on Oct. 30, 2022.
  • Jordan Horston paced the Lady Vols with 17 points on eight-of-13 shooting, while Sara Puckett chipped in 15 and Rickea Jackson added 14 in her Lady Vol debut.
  • In her first game as a Lady Vol, Jasmine Franklin pulled down 10 rebounds to set the tone for a 48-29 advantage on the glass for the Big Orange.
  • UT fired in 14 three-pointers on 20 attempts and limited the typically arc-hunting Lady Eagles to seven treys.
WHAT'S NEXT?
  • Tennessee returns to Food City Center at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, as the USA Women's National Team comes to Knoxville for a special exhibition game pitting the Lady Vols vs. players competing for spots on the U.S. Olympic Team for the 2024 Games in Paris.
  • Lady Vol fans should be aware that the USA Women's National Team contest is not part of the season ticket or parking package. Therefore, single-game tickets must be purchased for that match-up.
  • Free parking in all campus lots will be available for that game, as will free shuttle service from the Ag Campus. Fans will be dropped off and picked up immediately adjacent to Food City Center. ADA shuttles and entry will operate the same as previous years.
  • Please purchase tickets at AllVols.com or by calling the Tennessee Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-332-VOLS or 865-656-1200.

Rotation doesn't matter...there was not a player on the floor that played acceptable defense.
Evidently didn't watch the game that I watched as Wells and Powell played excellent defense and ended up with 5 steals. There were some players that didn't play that well for sure. I won't call out their names since this was an exhibition game and expect if you can't play defense your minutes will go down. A lot of players played several minutes they won't get once the season starts. We could have easily scored 130 points. Coach Kellie really used mostly bench players in most of the third and fourth quarters. There were about 70 minutes played by players that will probably get more like 20 total once the real games start.

Sara Puckett was outstanding offensively and rebounding. Jill made some nice mid-range shots. She used her size well to contest on close outs and is as versatile as any big with the ability to handle the basketball full court.
Kaiya Wynn and Jasmine Powell looked sharp overall. Both have improved their games.
Rickea Jackson, Destinee Wells, Jewel Spear, and Tamari Key as the season progresses can take get this team to another gear and a championship.

Wells is one of the best PGs in the country. Shes always been a Power 5 talent.. this ability will carry over into the season and now the LVs have elite skill and playmaking at the guard positions with Destinee, Jewel, and an emerging athlete in Kaiya Wynn.

Wynn is a remarkably skilled athlete.
Got to give her some opportunities to grow this season.
I was EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with the development of Kaiya Wynn. We saw glimpses of it the end of last season. She is athletic and smart! I believe she's going to be that guard Kellie puts in to disrupt and frustrate opponents and we don't want to take our foot off the gas. Really impressed with Kaiya - her hard work has paid off!
