Game Thread Lady Vols vs East Tennessee State

Yes she is! I think she is going to be huge for us! I think Holly needs to allow her to play. She has shown that she is a "Team Player" unlike the rep she received at NC. She has the ability to make everyone better and not only does she lead by example but she isn't afraid to speak her mind. Let her set up the offense and stop telling her (and the other guards) to "force"/play inside out, instead tell them to move the ball and take the open shot. Not to bring other teams into it but UConn's biggest asset (outside of players knowing their role with is another topic) is that they move the ball and when someone is open they take the shot. Several times tonight Middleton, Carter, and Reynolds have had open shots only to not take the shot and try to force it inside. I expect more from out program and would love nothing more than to see Holly "get it right"/succeed but she has to trust her team and coach them up to their abilities and not for them to do things they just can't do.

i agree with them needing to take the open shot, especially if there is no open pass inside the paint, don't be making the dumb passes inside, when nobody is open

Middleton did a lot of good things for us in the first half too...rebs, assists, steals, and took care of the ball. Our half-time lead would have been a lot less without her.

they did look flat in the first half, especially the first Quarter,it was like they just expected everything to go there way, which it didn't

I don't know what happened at half time, but it took

Holly said she coached the 1st quarter became frustrated and just sat down and let them go the rest of the time. The problems are still there, ETSU was too over matched.

This statement is why a new coach is needed. They play better than you coach. That's a problem. These girls could streetball their way to a final four but coaching would led them to a title. She is a disappointment.

The four-guard, one-post lineup was about the best thing that came out of this game. This lineup eliminates one of the systemic problems. Also maybe Cooper and DeShields are starting to settle down with their outside shooting a tiny bit.

The rest of you will have to excuse me re the press - I am not a fan of it. It works against the ETSU's of the world. It fails against well-prepared, disciplined teams that know how to beat it. Eventually the LV's will have to execute both defensively and offensively in a half court game. This win is no magic pill that cures those inabilities.

It still looks to be a slow grind of a season with baby-steps for improvements.

The problems may still be there but with her saying she set down and let them go the rest of time shows that she is majority of the problem and that the players aren't listening which isn't a good thing. Sometimes coaches can try to do too much or want their team/players to do more than is needed. I agree with the notion that we need to be a running team get the ball out in transition and go!

I would liked to have seen Nia in the fourth. She's going to have to play sometime better to get her some pt right now rather than having her look like a lost puppy within the offense come SEC play. Since we're without Jaime, Jas, and Kortney for a few weeks.

I was wondering why Nia was not playing, do you thank they may red shirt her this year?

For the "Fahr Holly yesterday" crowd, the rap has been that she is too nice to the players; does not have the fear factor that CPS wielded and so forth. Here are some postgame quotes:

Redshirt Sophomore Diamond DeShields

DeShields: (On the effect of Holly Warlick not coaching the second half)
"She always is like, 'This team is so talented. We're so talented. We're this, we're that. I don't know what it's going to take. What's it going to take?' I think that's what it took. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. Seeing her get that upset really changed us, especially in the second half. [Warlick] said it was like night-and-day. We all felt that way too. We're sorry it had to go that far, but maybe that's what it took."

(On why it took something dramatic to change the team's performance)
"Just an effort thing, that's really it. You see what happens when we really put our best foot forward. We're able to turn the game around in a half. Even in a quarter. The third quarter was awesome. Really, we've just got to play with 100 percent effort 100 percent of the time. I think we can do great things this year."

Redshirt Sophomore Mercedes Russell:

(On if she had seen Holly Warlick that angry before)
"No, I think this is the first time I've ever really seen her like that. I think it was just how we were playing that made her so mad. We were pretty stagnant on defense, and then we picked it up. But yeah, I've never really seen her like that before."

So, I guess Holly now needs to be fired right now because she is too tough on the players....

In all seriousness, it is a positive step that the LVs were able to blow out a weaker opponent instead playing down to a lower level as with their opening, presumably cupcake games.

If DeShields can continue to provide this kind of offensive spark (which is what you would expect from an A-A candidate), things are going to get a lot easier and smoother for the LVs in terms of offensive execution.

Damn, what a great post!
I'm seeing just a sliver of silver-lining. Can't wait for the next game to see if it continues.

I'm wondering along with gule why NIA isn't FREE,she should be getting some playing time,I haven't heard anything about an injury, she maybe in the doghouse with the coaches, but i haven't heard anything about that either, but it is hard to find a whole lot about players in Womens Basketball

I don't think they are trying to red shirt her,I may be wrong on that, she has been in a game or 2,but I'm not sure how much playing time is allowed for a red shirt

Athletics can be cruel. It may be that the coaching staff sees more potential in going with the younger players and opting for a small ball approach when Mercedes needs a rest. Players can make important contributions to the team without necessarily being on the court.
