Game Thread Lady Vols vs East Tennessee State

What worked in the second half was the ability to pressure the ball and force the other team into a lot of mistakes. The shooting wasn't that much better until late in the fourth quarter when Diamond and Cooper found their three point shot.
The team showed an identity last night and that is to keep pressure on the ball, trap and make the team really have to work on offense.
The two post system doesn't work for this team it just makes them slow with the ball and to concerned with getting it inside. They need to free flow not worried about getting the ball inside so much but more concerned with getting a good shot every possession.

I think Nia is still injured. She had a rib problem or something from what I heard. I know I will get blasted for this but I think it's pathetic that they had to rely on the full court press to beat ETSU. They should have blown this team away using half court offense and defense only. It was interesting during a timeout after a steal and basket by Deshields that Diamond walked up to Holly and put her hand to her ear wanting to hear a "good job" but Holly remained silent. Diamond walked away and said "come on". I think they got the message that Holly wasn't happy.

Not blasting but I don't really understand the complaint. This team really is built to be a high pressure defense, transition offense. Running great half court sets takes time and chemistry and a more experienced PG than a freshman.

So, they won comfortably when they starting doing what they are good at and stopped trying to play in the style that got them beat against TX and not having much margin against UT-C, PSU, and Syracuse, and Albany.

I guess because they used that tactic against a team they knew 100% that it would work on. It shouldn't have been needed to beat this team by 30. If they can do the same with 50% of the effectiveness against a team that is worth a flip, then I will be very happy. So far they haven't shown that. Like I said in a previous thread, when we beat a scrub team badly, some will only see unicorns, rainbows and rose petals. The fact is the same problem is still there. I want to see that effort against a Stanford or Oregon State, not some 3 win 4 loss scrub team.

Holly said she coached the 1st quarter became frustrated and just sat down and let them go the rest of the time. The problems are still there, ETSU was too over matched.

After Holly quit coaching and sitting down on the bench ,this team loosened up and played better basketball. At the time she quit coaching ETSU led by one point. Is there a message there for us,Holly and the team ?

I see what you are saying but on the other hand, the logic is a little "damned if you, damned if you don't". People on this board have been screaming for the LVs to dismantle a weaker opponent and so they went to a style that let them do exactly that. And, no one knows 100% in advance how a tactic will work until you use it.

If they will need to rely on pressing defense against Stanford and others (which I think will be the case), what is so bad about practicing in a real game situation?

I didn't say it was bad to use the press. I'm saying they shouldn't have had to and the way they began the game, they had to use it because they were getting beat by a scrub team. The press just covered up the underlying problem.

I understand your point. But you are seeing the press as a mere bandaid covering a deeper problem that needs to be fixed (only by getting better at the what LVs are not doing very well).

In contrast, I am saying that the solution to not being a good half court team is, for this set of players, to become a really good pressing team. If you can't turn water into wine, then make the water really high quality.

In other words, what you see as a cover of the problem, I am suggesting is the answer (ie. adopt a style that meshes with this team's skill set).

I so agree. I couldn't even watch the game wholeheartedly because the guards the upperclassmen guards were still making freshmen mistakes against a sub par team... when they should have been picking them apart. Mercedes no REAL post moves.. The full court press was a cover because they don't have a REAL offensive strategy... It is sad and scary at the same time

For the "Fahr Holly yesterday" crowd, the rap has been that she is too nice to the players; does not have the fear factor that CPS wielded and so forth. Here are some postgame quotes:

So, I guess Holly now needs to be fired right now because she is too tough on the players....

In all seriousness, it is a positive step that the LVs were able to blow out a weaker opponent instead playing down to a lower level as with their opening, presumably cupcake games.

If DeShields can continue to provide this kind of offensive spark (which is what you would expect from an A-A candidate), things are going to get a lot easier and smoother for the LVs in terms of offensive execution.

Before we crown Holly coach of the year and a lock for the final 4, lets see how the next few games work out. Getting mad does not necessarily mean she is ready to be crowned the coach of an elite team though the parts are there.

They scored a grand total of 47 points last night!

Texas did not score a lot either look like a LV type game to me. It is possible that both teams just played good defense and no one could hit their butt with two hands. What in the world does a low score have to do with not having good fundamentals?

That actually explains a lot. Best adjustment she has ever made....

Just maybe we need to let the players coach themselves. They did a great job in the second half when no one was coaching them. I think we got something here.

Exactly! What does it say about her coaching when the team plays significantly better when she took the 2nd half off?

It says that she got her point across. Regardless of what anonymous nothings say on a message board, these girls respect and admire Holly, and I think they realized their continued careless, lackadaisical play had frustrated and angered her to the breaking point. They didn't play better because Holly wasn't coaching them; they played better because they knew they had disappointed her and so they started doing what they should have been doing all along.
