Game Thread Lady Vols vs. Furman

3 rb's from your starting post player? and almost no scoring from her either? 5 times the mpg for 1 fourth of production. Can you say "Free Emily"?

you can look up team stats on utsports.com.

I bet Emily's stat line against Furman must have been great. Can you please post? What did she do in her 5 minutes?

my thing against her is she hasn't done enough on the court, that is all. git it done or git out of the way!

I don't think being 6' 1" mattered to that Martinez girl from WVU last week or the girl from TA&M a couple years ago?. they rebounded their arses off.

She outrebounded that Martinez girl and help put her in foul trouble ... but i get what your saying she could do more in the time she has. also to be fair every offensive foul we’ve drawn this year she has drawn it in pretty sure

I will be very surprised if ES actually lasts all of her years here unless she accepts Camera Harris type role ...

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Kellie in the transfer portal for an agile big

I heard on the pre-game that Darby has battled shin-splints this fall . . .

GBO

Yep, it’s been talked about on here. Dealt with them myself when I was playing. Really not fun. You can tell she’s still sore when she moves around. Any fast movement really hurts.

Yes a win is a win. It wasn’t pretty but there were multiple bright spots. Even an ugly win goes into the win column. It’s what you do with that ugly win that counts.

But there were many more dark spots:

2 turnovers in the 1st half, none in Q1
7 in Q3
5 in Q4
But that's only 14 for a game,,isn't that swell?
With such a comfortable lead, there were opportunities for teaching moment during the 2nd half...But 5 timeouts in our pocket go home with us

We give Furman!!! a 10 point run at the end of Q1 and into Q2...no timeout.
Then we give them a 12 point run at the end of Q2 and into Q3 that continues into a 20-5 run...no timeout
Teaching moments lost

Davis, Horston and Key go home with a combined 19 points .... A total EACH one of them should have had, each individually...But no one in their grills....All at t ime with shoulders slumping and bewilderment on their faces.
Teaching moments.

unacceptable

My daughter is a college soccer player and missed a season with this injury. Shin splints, though still commonly used is not an accurate term. Medial tibial stress syndrome is the preferred term in the medical world. It highlights that this injury presents a continuum from a pain inducing level of bone inflammation to stress fractures.

Or in other words, when you have shin splints you are somewhere on a path to stress fractures if not managed correctly. The level of inflammation can of course vary from mild to more severe but if it caused the player to miss time, odds the injury is more than mild bone inflammation.

MTS is a very hard injury to play through because pounding continues to irritate the bone. Once the injury settles down, which usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, then, the ideal case is a gradual increase of stress load that goes on for another 6 weeks (and that is basically just a program of steadily increasing running and weight resistance without cutting or jumping). After that progression is completed, the athlete can begin a gradual return to play.

Trying to play through it during a season means managing the pain and hoping the irritation does not tip into fracture territory. And that generally means lots of days off, limited minutes when you are on the practice court.

This news is not great for Tess.

We talking the same Martinez girl that came in averaging a double double that is an inch taller and finished with 10pts, 8rebs, and fouled out? If memory serves me correctly Green finished with 12pts, 9rebs, and 1 block shot! You may not see what Keyen does but trust that the team and the coaches do.

Before this game thread completely dies, I want to give props to the Furman Paladins. If everything were the same for them except they'd had Tennessee's size, they very well might have won the game. Obviously well-coached, I enjoyed the heck out of watching them play. And what a thrill it had to be for them to come into TBA, even without a crowd. Just to play on The Summitt was surely a big deal to them. Pat would have been very complimentary to them in the post-game handshake line, to be sure.

I thought they played with a lot of fire as well. To their credit they hit a lot of the open shots we gave them. They also came out with a real fire in that 3rd quarter before they lost steam. They ran their offense very well, spaced the floor and forced us to chase off screens. They do look very well coached and I hope they have success in their conference. Their big gal looks like she’s in considerable pain from her knees. Hope she does OK this season. She played tough for being basically handicapped.

Agreed. I found myself cringing several times when I focused too much on the big gal's knees. The one with the brace on it turned in so badly at the knee joint that it looked like it was going to snap. While I understand how a competitive young person would want to push through and try to have one last season of playing sports, I am seriously afraid for her. :(

You don't know that. Bobby Knight Theatre showy hey-lookie-at-me up in grills moment was lost.. That does not mean teaching didn't go on and will continue to.

Once again, you confuse style with substance.

I know, really? Like they won't look at the game film with their coaches? It's not like they show up and play and then say "see you next week".

Dead horse beating time.....

in 20+ mpg of playing time in 4 games, KG has a total of 12 rb's @ 3pg against quite honestly inferior opponents. @0.15 rebound per minute

In barely 4 mpg in 3 games played, ES has @ 1.7 rb pg against those same opponents. @0.425 rebound per minute

Right now we are not having very good post play. I thought Mr. KJH was a post guru. Key has the right size but is not very aggressive and fouls way too much. KK is big enough but does not appear to be in great shape and she has a tough time getting control of the ball. Green does not appear to be very consistent. KJH might want to think about playing a lineup that is more athletic without a natural post.

Davis will get her 19 back, I'm certain.

If Key gets 19 consistently we go to the Final Four. But sadly, this will not happen. If Key could average 8 or 9 I'd be delighted. We really, really need someone, somehow to unlock Key on offense.

Horston definitely has 19 in her, but right now its a vexing problem figuring out when and where to play her to bring them forth. There's such a crowd at 2, 3, and 4. She had a couple of really good games, then looked a little out of synch again against Furman.

If we consistently had the points Davis, Burrell, and Horston are capable of, we'd be sitting pretty. Almost make up for lack of post offense.

Thanks to the link of the game , I was able to see exactly how things progressed instead of just reacting to audio broadcast.

The best thing in the whole game to me was when Marta seemed to say "Okay, if you girls are gonna flop in the paint on us and get charging fouls called, I'll give you a real one!" She flattened some girl and after that, no more flops.... And it seemed Tn played a lot looser and better.
afterward.

Agree with those who said we really need better post play. And we've needed it for a few years now. CJH only had one season with them, and who knows how much was accomplished this summer with the COVID restrictions, but if some progress isn't visible this season, then we need a new post coach. And that is going to be a very sticky problem to fix.
